Labrooy, Chris

After graduating from the RCA with an MA in design products, Chris Labrooy first began to use 3D as a simple tool to visualise ideas for furniture and products that he could not afford to produce. As 3D technology and hardware evolved, Chris LaBrooy saw an opportunity to explore CGI as a creative medium in itself with which he could subvert and twist familiar everyday things into new typographic and sculptural forms. Chris LaBrooy is interested in the intersection between typography, architecture, product design and visual art. Chris LaBrooy has exhibited at the design museum in London and has been featured in many publications covering design, products, typography and illustration. Clients include NY Department of transportation, Future publishing, Scientific American, Avid brakes, Taste festivals and Microsoft.

Roe, Monika

After graduating with a degree in graphic design, Monika Roe worked as an art director and creative director for ad agencies in Los Angeles and Indianapolis. Now a full-time illustrator, some of Monika's clients include: Microsoft, Toyota, Mattel, Diet Coke, Pantene, Coty, Conde Nast Publications, Penguin Group, Doubleday, Random House, Harper Collins, Simon & Schuster, Time Inc., The Wall Street Journal, and Hallmark. Newman, Malane

As a life-long illustrator and cartoonist, Malane Newman now mainly focuses on cartoon illustration, freelance cartooning, character design, and licensed character artwork. Contracted licensed character work includes Mattel’s Barbie – A Fashion Fairy Tale and The Toon Studio of Beverly Hills - Fairy Tale High. Her portfolio includes digital illustrations for packaging, advertising, new character development, board games and toys, and children’s books. Malane Newman has worked quite extensively with clients designing original cartoon characters and illustrating their new products. Morgan, Patrick

Patrick started his career as a freelance designer after gaining a Degree in Graphics and Illustration with Commendations for Print Making at Kingston University (London) in 1998. In Sylvia's years of experience as a freelance illustrator she has cultivated a style that clients call upon to convey a sense of beauty and place. Berry Rhys, Alan

Alan Berry Rhys is a graphic artist and illustrator home based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He has been a graphic design professor at Buenos Aires University for 8 years. As an artist, I have produced several solo shows at Buenos Aires (Argentina), Rosario (Argentina), San Francisco (CA, USA) and Santiago de Chile (Chile). In addition, Alan has participated in several combined shows, at Portland (Oregon, USA), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Tandil (Argentina) and Asunción (Paraguay). He has been invited to the last 3 editions of Puma Urban Art in Buenos Aires.
He's worked for a wide range of commercial and commissioned works for brands developing graphic universes and illustrations.
Vintage graphic advertising inspires his work. He loves the look of low-fi printing. It's errors and limitations that give his work a distinctive characteristic. Using screen-printing, risograph and painting, Alan has developed a style based on low quality printing methods of the early graphic advertising. He also has extended work on lettering and typography.

Bollinger, Peter

Renowned in the field of commercial art, Peter Bollinger is an award winning illustrator whose clients include Grey Advertising, Sony Entertainment, DreamWorks, Sega, Wizards of the Coast, Nintendo, Mars, Harper Collins, Scholastic and many other publishing, advertising, and entertainment organizations. Holding degrees in industrial and environmental design, Peter's expertise covers diverse fields, from the design of computer terminals and street furniture, to monorails and automobiles. Gibbon, Rebecca

Illustrator, Rebecca Gibbon was born in Wales in 1968. The youngest of four children she was fed on a diet of picture books by Edward Ardizzone, Roger Duvoisin & Richard Scarry; she dreamed of being an illustrator. Her favorite book was "Frances Face-Maker" by Tome Ungerer.

Her ambition was realized after gaining a first class Honors degree from John Moors University and consequently a Masters at Royal College of Art, London. While at the RCA she was spotted at a children’s book expo in Paris by a French Agent. Since graduating she has worked all over the globe and is represented in New York by Riley Illustration

Rebecca paints in watercolor ink & cultured pencil, and bases her characters on the people she has met and seen over the years. She used to paint on newsprint until one day she looked back at some old work and it had all faded. Lesson learned she now works on acid free cartridge paper.

She lives with her husband and two boys in what was once the Old Village Stores surrounded by their eclectic collections of vintage children’s books, balloon pumps & 1950's ceramics. She loves junk shops, flea markets, drinking tea & of course drawing.

Glass, Randy

Originally from Kansas City, Randy became the youngest illustrator Hallmark Cards had ever hired — while still a junior in high school. He attended Ringling School of Art and Art Center College of Design, supplementing his tuition by drawing five-minute portraits of people at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World ... a surprisingly valuable education in discipline and patience. Randy began freelancing as an illustrator in the mid-’80s, quickly establishing a strong reputation for highly detailed representational drawing and painting. Although adept at working in color, he gravitated toward and has always preferred a simple black and white palette. He is a master of the graphic technique known as “stipple” — the process of marking a surface with numerous small dots to create an image. It’s a style favored by print media, where paper quality can adversely affect the reproduction of an image, and by its very nature, it’s ideal for Web usage. Perhaps best known commercially as a portrait artist, Randy has an exceptional aptitude for capturing his subject’s character and essence with carefully nuanced precision. This, combined with his stippling expertise, made him a perfect match for the Wall Street Journal’s iconic portraits known as “hedcuts”; he’s created several hundred of them since 1998. Over the years, Randy has received recognition by The Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, Communication Arts, The Art Director’s Club, and Illustration West. Crowther, Peter

Peter Crowther graduated in 1987 from the London College of Printing with a First Class Honors in Graphic Design. Then went onto the Royal College of Art in 1987-1989 graduating with an MA(DES RCA) in Graphic Design. He then worked for six months in one of the first truly multimedia design companies, Decode Design. During this time he beta tested the first version of Photoshop and went onto leave and set up as a freelance illustrator/animator. The journey from working with photomontage, through to photo-retouching and later with realistic 3D has led to many interesting and varied jobs and has been incredibly rewarding. From stamps for the Royal mail up to 96 sheet posters for P&O and the odd title sequence. Today we continue to use the cutting edge 3D software often speaking directly with the chief programmers to request and test new features. As the technology evolves we strive to create the highest level of work with an eye for the details. Peter Crowther lives in London with his wife Suzanna and two children, Roberta and Jack.

Sprouls, Kevin

Kevin Sprouls introduced the hallmark portrait style to the Wall Street Journal in 1979. Between 1979 and 1987, Kevin worked on staff for the paper, creating illustrations and training artists in the style. At the time of his departure from the daily activity of putting out the paper, he was Assistant Art Director in charge of the in-house artists, which numbered 4-5 staff artists, and 2-3 part-timers.

He has been quite active in the freelance illustration sphere since then, contributing to advertising, publishing, editorial and corporate projects. His style is notable for its high level of detail and traditional, engraving like effect.

Sprouls’ work has been featured in the Smithsonian magazine, a web exhibit of the National Portrait Gallery, and a major exhibit celebrating Columbus Day which was mounted in Grand Central Terminal, New York in 2005. He is currently the principal portrait artist for Worth Magazine. He was the portraitist for the popular Infiniti “Drivers” ad campaign, appearing weekly in the Wall Street Journal for the 2+ years.

Recent work has appeared in Fortune, Forbes, Runner’s World, GQ, Sportrs Illustrated, Time (International Edition), Euroman, and Esquire magazines. Recent book projects include the Encyclopedia of Guilty Pleasures and The Art of Demotivation. His pen is housed in the Newseum in Washington, D.C. Kevin Sprouls is married with 2 children, and lives in Coastal North Carolina.

Church, Caroline

Caroline Church is a scraperboard artist, and the perfect illustrator to approach if you’re after something with a vintage engraved look to it. Based in Twickenham, she grew up in Uganda, where she had pet chameleons and was encouraged to make greetings cards by her mother.

Caroline received a BA in Illustration at the Chelsea School of Art. She then learned wood engraving as a guest student at Royal Academy Schools.

Caroline’s style is reminiscent of 19th century engraving, so it tends to lend itself well to projects that aim to convey traditional and time-honoured values. Not surprisingly, her main influences include the engravers Thomas Bewick and Gustav Dore.

Day, Amber

Being able to create a world for somebody using just lines and colours – that’s what fascinates Amber Day, an LA-based illustrator who’s done stunning work for a range of fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands. “There’s no better feeling to me than being able to tell a story through an image,” she says.

Travel and taste are two of her biggest passions. “I’ve literally eaten my way through Europe, Africa, and Asia, and I love paddle boarding on The Great Lakes,” she explains.

Alongside the travelling and eating, she’s always drawing - fashion, food and beauty. Her visit to Morocco inspired her to draw Moroccan rugs for weeks, and the Red Panda at Nashville Zoo led to an obsession with the species. So far, her favourite city is Prague and she returns there two or three times a year. At home, her best friend and work partner is Kale, a rescue poodle with three legs.

Amber studied for a degree in Visual Communications from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles.

Amber’s bold line work has a natural, sketched feel to it, while the addition of watercolour gives her illustrations an organic look and her restrained use of colour sets the mood. A few years ago, she made the decision to draw products how they’d look when laid out flat and it’s proven extremely popular with clients in fashion and beauty.

When she’s creating culinary sketches, she gives them a personal perspective and includes the nuances of real life rather than aiming for perfection. “I want the viewer to feel like they are experiencing the food as if they are there. The napkin might be placed a little off, French fries might be brown from being cooked too long, and the burger could be half-eaten,” she says.

Armstrong, Gail

Gail Armstrong has been creating paper sculptures for over 20 years and her enthusiasm for the medium hasn’t waned one snip. She still wants every image she creates to be better than the last, and this approach has led to plenty of awards, including a Cannes Gold Lion for her Kleenex campaign. She finds inspiration in contemporary art and, not surprisingly, the huge Paperchase outlet on Tottenham Court Road in London.

Gail did her foundation course at Sheffield Polytechnic before gaining both a BA and Post Graduate Diploma in Graphic Design and Illustration at Glasgow School of Art.

Though finally rendered in pieces of paper that have been carefully cut and glued together, each image Gail creates begins as a series of drawings. As she explores the composition and various concepts, she focuses on creating something that has both style and substance to it. The result is usually a photograph of her artwork, which viewers love to see more than once, poring over the textures, colours and patterns in the final construction.

Schommer, Florian

Berlin based Art Director and Designer working within branding, illustration, editorial design, packaging design and contemporary art. Tallon, Ben

Loud, lively, frenetic and expressive, Ben Tallon’s artwork captures the many moods of modern life thanks to his instinctive drawing style and ample splashes of ink, brush marks and scribbles. His ability to organize chaotic creativity and turn it into a captivating image is exactly what his clients want.

Growing up in Keighley, West Yorkshire, Ben loved Leeds United, wrestling and video games as a child. They still give him inspiration today, and sometimes feature in his work, alongside pop icons and TV stars. Now located in London, Ben is passionate about creativity and is the author of Champagne and Wax Crayons, as well as the host of the podcast Arrest All Mimics. He has a BTEC in Graphic Design from Keighley College, and a BA in Illustration from the University of Central Lancashire.

APPROACH
Pens, inks, brushes, found materials and textures, acrylics, spray paint, pastels, wax and colored pencils – Ben is very much a mixed media creative. He’ll use worn out old brushes that have a little more depth and character than new ones, and favors the unexpected or happy accident. Photoshop is used to layer everything together and finalize the composition.

STYLE
Ben’s style is loose and organic, full of marks and gaps because he likes to engage viewers by leaving something to the imagination.

Venables, Bob

Bob Venables is the go-to illustrator for any project that requires illustrations executed in a classic style. Matisse, Hogarth, Wyeth, Rackham, Lowbrow… whatever look you’re after, Bob will deliver. He’s a pastiche illustrator par excellence.

Bob has worked on many high profile advertising campaigns, including the Profit Hunter ads for Artemis, which have run for over a decade. His versatility, eye for detail, and ability to evoke the past while conveying contemporary themes to contemporary audiences are what keep clients coming back again and again. Originally from Birmingham, Bob worked in London and established himself on the advertising scene before moving to the Isle of Wight, where life is a little more relaxed. He studied Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins gaining a BA, and did archaeological illustration for a year before becoming a freelancer.

APPROACH
Bob works in a whole range of media, depending on what’s required by the commission. On the traditional side he uses oil, acrylic, alkyd, watercolor, and pen and ink, but he’s also happy working digitally on his Wacom Cintiq.

Primarily a pastiche illustrator, Bob is adept at recreating just about any look – from 1930s propaganda-style posters to old maps, and from neoclassical still lifes to jolly 19th century book illustrations.

Sheehan, Lisa

Lisa Sheehan lives and works as an illustrator in Bedfordshire. During her BA Illustration at Kingston University (many moons ago) she decided she wanted to become a 3D artist/model maker. Back then that meant literally making the model shooting it and all the faff that went with it, which as a young graduate seemed all a bit too much so Lisa fell into the world of graphic design becoming an Art Director for the Financial Times and spent the next 15 years commissioning CGI artists. The drive to create never left and the desire to produce her own work became so strong that she decided to create the illustrations herself. By working night and day, to grasp the technology of the CGI wizardry, her dreams of ‘model making’ were now back on track albeit within the digital world.

Lisa is a 2D/3D ‘image maker’ producing imaginative CGI illustrations that are often typographical with a pop of colour. Lisa loves to create fun pieces with detailed delicate forms as well as mixing 2D and 3D to create illustrations for advertising and editorial work. The idea that you can, with CGI technology, create almost anything your creative mind can conjure up continues to inspire Lisa every day.

Lisa works part time for the Financial Times as an art director and in-house illustrator, she has extensive magazine cover art-direction experience, having art directed several Financial Times magazines. Lisa is also a published Children’s book illustrator/Author, with an MA in Children’s book illustration from Cambridge school of art.

Chico Hayasaki has been working on a wide range of projects for advertising agencies, magazines and cosmetic brands around the world. Recent clients include Godiva, Afternoon Tea and LOTTE.

She has been a regular contributor to various charity works around the world including My Little Pony Project(USA), Snoopy 's 60th Anniversary(China), PRODUCT (Red) T-shirt by GAP(Global), as well as “366 ART HEART COCORO,” hosted by LOVE FOR NIPPON in support for the victims of earthquake in Japan.

Fulvimari, Jeffrey

Jeffrey Fulvimari began his illustration career in 1993, and soon he was working on prestigious jobs, including commissions for Barney’s New York and regular contributions to Interview magazine. Over the years, he has gone on to work in nearly all aspects of printed media, including advertising, sales promotion and editorial layouts. His illustrations have also been animated and broadcast on Nickelodeon, MTV and VH-1, The Food Network and numerous television commercials in Japan. Jeffrey is most recently known to a wide audience for his collaboration with Madonna, illustrating her wildly successful 13 volume set of children’s books entitled The English Roses.

In 1998 Jeffrey was invited to exhibit his work at the Parco Gallery in Tokyo, which in turn launched his Japanese career. He has published two monographs in Japan: It’s OK and Everything’s Gonna Be Alright (1998) and Jeffrey Fulvimari’s Greatest Hits (2003), an eclectic collection of drawings, photos, songs and poems. He has since exhibited extensively with solo shows of his paintings and drawings throughout Japan and Asia.

Beginning in 1999, Jeffrey has produced a broad range of licensed goods in Japan and has also launched popular product lines in the US, the UK, France, Italy, Mexico and other territories. These products – covering the gamut of apparel, stationery, handbags, leather goods, bath products, household items and footwear – are sold in quality outlets including Barnes and Noble, Kohl’s, Mark’s and Spencer, Top Shop and others.

Perini, Ben

Heiner, Joe & Kathy

In 1964 Kathryn (Kathy) Hughes sat next to me (Joe Heiner) in our sixth grade classroom at Ensign Elementary school in Salt Lake City, Utah. While quietly sitting at her desk, Kathy was struck by a ruler hurled at me (I ducked) by our teacher, Mr. Anderson. We became close friends. After the eighth grade, my family moved to Montreal, P.Q. Canada. It was a long time till I saw Kathy again. Kathy's family stayed in Salt Lake City where Kathy later attended East High School. Kathy married, moved to San Francisco and had one son, Michael. After returning to Salt Lake City, Kathy graduated Cum Laude from University of Utah with a BS degree in Social Sciences. She taught nursery school for two years, became a single parent and a secretary for Architects and Planners in Salt Lake City. I attended Beaconsfield High School near Montreal, studied art and photography at Brigham Young University, and Art Center College of Design, married and had two children. I assisted commercial photographers Ed Goldstien and Carl Furuta. I also assisted David Willardson, illustrator, shooting detailed 4X5 photo reference for his airbrush illustrations. Willardson taught me airbrush techniques and helped develop an airbrush / photographic illustration style. My first portfolio of ten photo / illustrations quickly generated assignments from movie studios, advertising agencies, magazines and recording companies. With the help of the same great reps who represented Willardson, assignments came from across the country. This afforded a move back to Utah. Work went well from Utah and I became a single parent. Fifteen years after sitting by Kathy in sixth grade, she married me. We now have five children (combined) and work together in our studio in Alpine, Utah. Our studio continues to create realistic photo / illustration for clients across the country. Kathy is studio manager and stylist. I am photographer / computer illustrator. Early works were a combination of airbrush and silk screen on photographic prints. Current work is digital, a merging of digital photography and computer illustration. We have received numerous awards including The One Show Gold Award and our work is represented in the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art. Marty Baumann has worked as an artist at Pixar Animation Studios as an illustrator, graphic artist and production designer on such films as "Toy Story 3," "Cars 2," "Mater's Tall Tales," and many others. Coyle, Laura

Laura made her first foray into product design with Hasbro. She was called upon to refresh the classic Parcheesi board game, a design that had remained unchanged since the early 1900's. Friel, Helen

Since graduating in 2009 from Central Saint Martins, with a first class degree in Graphic Design, Helen Friel has been working as a freelance Paper Engineer. Helen both hand cuts and uses technology to produce her pieces. Bridging the gap between two and three dimensions is central to her design practice as well as producing pieces that involve and evoke emotion in the audience. Many of her pieces are stage sets in miniature, creating worlds with layers of card and paper. They are often influenced by an off-beat sense of humour that captions the delicate cut-outs. Steele, Robert Gantt

Robert Gantt Steele loves illustrating the relationship between natural and man made subjects. His paintings of architecture, for example, are made richer by his inclusion of painterly human and natural forms. The human subjects he paints, on the other hand, inhabit a convincingly detailed back ground. Robert enjoys the research needed to accurately capture the detail as well as the mood and atmosphere of his subjects. Recent projects include a commission by Smithsonian Magazine to illustrate the human character and the atmosphere of a particular small town in France. Robert studies music and is a performer in local San Francisco productions. This helped him create illustrations used for the promotion of Broadway shows such as “Showboat.” He completes several book covers and children’s books as well as many other com- missions each year. Downard, Barry

Having worked in the advertising, marketing, photography, and allied creative design industries since 1984, Barry Downard's business is based on providing creative visual solutions and concepts (photography, illustrator, artwork and design) to advertising & design agencies, and publishers. Trained as an interior designer, Barry designed houses, shop interiors, exhibition stands and fashion shows, played drums and worked as an art director before drifting into fashion and advertising photography. In 1993, Barry became inspired by the story-telling possibilities of digitally manipulating his photographs, and developed a style of photo-illustration. Barry's technique consists of taking lots of photographs (shot by himself, supplied by client, or stock images), throwing them into a photo-snaffling machine, stirring it up with a healthy dose of fun, and sticking it all together with computer glue.

Chris Peterson Illustration

Christopher Peterson's work is marked by great attention to detail, while maintaining an informal colorful and painterly feel. His creative approach is thorough and focused, sometimes reading an entire biography when starting a rock poster. Whenever possible, photographic reference must be his own. Drawing is always central to the work. Good figures and correct perspective are important while maintaining a spontaneous flair. These are the strengths that make Christopher one of the best freelance illustrators on the west coast.

Having been the president of the San Francisco Society of illustrators, he knows this business of illustration inside and out. He is a member of the Society of Illustrators, the US Air Force Art Program, ASIP, a leading organization in the fight for copyright protection and a royalties collection society for artists. He has taught illustration at both California College of Art and the Academy of Art College.

His rock posters have won major national recognition. He has created posters for Paul McCartney, Phish, The String Cheese Incident, Sting, Eric Clapton, Elvis Costello, John Hiatt, Taj Mahal and Gloria Estefan. There is a section on his work in the Art of Modern Rock (Chronicle books, 2004). His poster for John Lee Hooker won a Gold Medal in the San Fancisco Society of Illustrators, and won a place in the New York Society of Illustrators annual show and book- Illustrators 42 (Watson-Guptil, 1998). He has in fact created more than 80 posters for a variety of venues and bands. His original paintings hang in the halls of the Pentagon, as a part of the US Air Force Art program. His work has been published in the Los Angeles Society of illustrators annual book, and in Print magazine's regional design annual. In 1995, he won the bronze medal for advertising in the San Francisco society of illustrators show, in1996 he won gold, silver, and bronze medals in the San Francisco society of illustrators show.

In addition to Rock posters, Mr. Peterson does a wide variety of illustration, including storyboards, renderings, set design, murals and print.

Christopher Peterson was born in New York in 1957, and grew up in Westport, Connecticut. He received his education at the Art Institute of Boston, and then at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and began his career as an Illustrator in New York City in 1980. I am a 3D artist living in Jersey City, NJ. All of the work presented in this gallery was created using 3D Studio Max w/ VRay. I work quickly, utilizing custom scripts and program mods to maximize efficiency when used in conjunction with a photo-composite/editing software.

My main base of work lies in the photo real aspect, but lately I have been working both professionally and privately to bring more stylized/illustrator-ly pieces to my gallery.

Ed Bray is an illustration graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. After graduation, he began his illustration career in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he worked for a company on pen and ink and marker layouts. In addition to his commercial assignments, he focused on watercolor landscapes of the Midwest, which were exhibited at the Fuller Museum in Massachusetts. Watkinson, Mark

Born in Gloucestershire and growing up in Lincolnshire, Mark originally wanted to be a mechanic. However, one of his teachers suggested he pursue a career in art and he’s been a successful freelance illustrator since the early 80s. He plays percussion in a band called the B1200s, collects old cars and enjoys a game of tennis. His early influences include Gavin McLeod and Philip Castle.

Mark earned a diploma and then a higher diploma in Graphic Design from the Lincoln College of Art.

Keep it clean, clear and simple is Mark’s mantra. He works in Freehand, Illustrator and Photoshop, as well as using traditional media.

Mark’s style is very graphic with strong line work, and usually employs flat colours. His work is ideal for ‘how to’ images and infographics, with isometric viewpoints and, sometimes, a blueprint feel. He enjoys tackling technical challenges, but also produces more playful and conceptual work.

Tracie Ching is an illustrator and graphic designer living and working in Washington, DC. A self-taught digital artist, Tracie specializes in portraiture featuring complex, graphic line work with a limited palette - a tendency-turned-style after years of working in the medium of silkscreen prints.
