Cohen, Jim

Jim creates science-fiction illustrations, space art and fantasy landscapes.

Rathke, Kathryn

Looking at one of Kathryn Rathke’s line-based illustrations can be a bit like working out a puzzle – was it created using one fluid and continuous line, or many? According to the Seattle-based artist she owes her drawing skills to family connections. Her grandmother taught her to draw and supplied her with books by Arthur Rackham, Maurice Sendak, and William Steig, while her father was president of an advertising agency and used to bring home reams of paper for her to practice on.

She has lots of other creative interests too. She learned to make leather masks in Italy, enjoys German experimental theatre, and sometimes throws parties where her friends must act out vignettes found in a 1912 children’s book called Entertainments for All the Year.

Kathryn did an MFA in Set Design at the University of Wisconsin but was always drawing on the side, sometimes accepting commissions from newspapers and magazines. Eventually she flipped things around and made her illustration work a full-time profession and set design became her hobby.

Kathryn does everything digitally in Photoshop and Illustrator using a Cintiq screen by Wacom.

If she’s doing portraiture work, she draws her subject many times over from different angles. This way she learns about the most important features of their face and can draw it in a way that makes it instantly recognisable.

The line is core to Kathryn’s style and her work is very fluid. Expressive and calligraphic, there’s a unique sense of gesture in her illustrations. She also uses crosshatching to develop surfaces in her images, using layers of lines of varying thickness to build up a texture.

Koelsch, Mike

Michael Koelsch (b: 1967) is an illustrator who acknowledges the beliefs of some of the great illustrators of the 50's and 60's, the giants like Coby Whitmore and Austin Briggs, who thought that keeping up with the times and evolving your style is as important as your sense of design and color and the fundamentals of drawing and painting. Mike resides in Huntington Beach, California with his wife, two girls and their Greater Swiss Mountain dog. Living by the beach and having a family he lives in perpetual motion between surfing, club soccer with the girls and actually getting some work done. Somewhere in there there is time for sleep. Moreno, Gabriel

Illustrator, engraver and painter based in Madrid, graduated in Fine Art from the University of Sevilla in 1998. Since then he has worked in different design studios and advertising agencies in Andalusia. In 2004 he moved to Madrid and in 2007 began showing his portfolio. He was named among the top 20 new illustrators by Computer Arts magazine in 2007. Prades, Simon

Simon Prades, born in 1985 into a german/spanish family is living in Saarbrücken, Germany with his wife and son.Since finishing University with a diploma in Graphic Design, he has been working as a freelance illustrator for clients in Editorial, Publishing, Sports, Advertising and Film.

Simon works in analog techniques, such as ink, pencils or watercolor but also digitally, depending on the subject. His work is often a combination of detailed and complex drawings and narrative ideas. Depending on the subject his illustrations can also be rough, spontaneous and moody. He also creates slightly animated versions of his illustrations, which can be used in digital publishing and media.

Wilson, Joe

Leicester-born Joe Wilson studied at Leeds Metropolitan University, Graduating with a bachelor of arts degree in Graphic Arts and Design in 2007. After a lifetime of drawing and doodling Joe Wilson became serious about being an artist at an early age and has left himself 'no other option'. Joe Wilson took an interest in printmaking at university and studied this heavily in his final year, with a great deal of his work taking the form of screen prints and etchings. This forms the foundation of Joe Wilson's work today, although since finishing university and leaving the print facilities, other ways of creating similar effects have had to be employed. Joe Wilson's work consists of painstakingly detailed, hand-drawn illustrations, usually in fine-line pen or pencil, that are then scanned and edited on the mac. Joe Wilson takes his influence from an array of sources including old engravings, 70s Vinyl covers and surrealist art. Joe Wilson is particularly interested in ideas of evolution, space, and complex constructions. Joe Wilson's unique drawing style attracts a mixture of different clients from editorial to fashion, he has produced work for clients such as: The Guardian, Adidas, 21st Amendment, Mojo magazine, Prospect Magazine, RKCR/Y&R, The Yards, Peter Werth, The Big Chill Festival, and Topshop. The Red Dress is a London based Illustration duo, Olivia Chancellor and Ollie Bland. This husband and wife team met while studying Graphic Design and Illustration at Central St. Martins in 1996. The Red Dress' love for all types of Vintage posters (especially B-Movies) and Pulp Fiction illustration has inspired Olivia and Ollie to join creative forces. Friel, Helen

Since graduating in 2009 from Central Saint Martins, with a first class degree in Graphic Design, Helen Friel has been working as a freelance Paper Engineer. Helen both hand cuts and uses technology to produce her pieces. Bridging the gap between two and three dimensions is central to her design practice as well as producing pieces that involve and evoke emotion in the audience. Many of her pieces are stage sets in miniature, creating worlds with layers of card and paper. They are often influenced by an off-beat sense of humour that captions the delicate cut-outs. Griffo, Daniel

Daniel Griffo was born on March 8th, 1973 in La Plata, Argentina, where he currently resides with his wife Elba, his baby boy Benjamin and his two pets Indiana and Jones. As a young child, he was always drawn towards creating and drawing images. At 10, he took his first steps into the world of illustration with the guidance of his drawing and painting instructor who taught him the basic foundations of the craft. In his teens, he became a self-taught comic illustrator and worked for both Argentinean and Italian publishers. Shortly afterwards, he worked for various studios creating licensed art, where he sharpened his skills and amassed a great deal of experience. As a freelance illustrator, Daniel has worked for many large companies including Image Comics, Warner, DC, and Disney. Baker, Andrew

Andrew Baker is a successful practicing illustrator, with a strong reputation in editorial illustration and poster design. He won a Gold Award for Editorial illustrator from the Association of Illustrators in 2003, and his work has been featured in the Design, New Media and Editorial sections of the AOI Images Annual and in the D&AD annual. His work is seen in most serious newspapers and magazines, from The Guardian to New Scientist, and in on-line environments, shop windows and on posters and book covers. He is primarily concerned with using images for storytelling or conveying messages. Drawing, colour, a love for ephemera and an eye for retro design inform his work. Projects are started with drawing and completed using illustrator and Photoshop in a distinctive way. Williamson, Alex

Alex Williamson was born in England in 1973 and now lives and works as an illustrator and Graphic Artist in London. Alex Williamson has a BA Graphic Design (printmaking) from Leeds Metropolitan University and an MA in Communication Design from the RCA. Alex creates original artwork using cut-out, collage and print techniques, combining found ephemera, drawing and photography. His work is concerned with experimental graphic process, fiction and narrative. Morgan, Patrick

Patrick started his career as a freelance designer after gaining a Degree in Graphics and Illustration with Commendations for Print Making at Kingston University (London) in 1998. Patrick has done high profile work for global clients including: Transport of London, Cingular, Starbucks, Bacardi, Smirnoff, Coca-Cola and Waitrose, which has resulted in him having to work in Japan, Spain, Italy and the USA as well as London, and having his work appear in many more countries across USA, Europe and Asia. Ward, Mark

Mark Ward is an artist based in London. His work is derived from his obsession with Americana. Raised on a diet of Saturday morning cartoons, BMX, skateboarding, and drawing, Mark has kept true to his roots soaking up every last candy wrapper and morphing them into his surreal and comical visions. Growing up in the South London suburbs in the late 80’s, Mark was reading every possible American skateboard magazine he could get his hands on. He realized his grey London environment didn’t reflect the sunny California he was being sold in the magazines. Rolling through puddles in South London just doesn’t match up to cruising along Long Beach. Mark’s work mixes the everyday mundane with surreal elements of the 80’s American bubble, encouraging the viewer to see things differently, and peel back the gloss on the pop imagery that he worshipped in his childhood. Carey, James

James Carey studied at the London College of Printing, graduating in 2002 with a degree in Graphic Media Design. James Carey's image making combines traditional draughtsmanship with a modern, graphic approach. James works first by hand, and then digitally finesses the separate layers of found imagery, sketched portraiture, and photographic elements, to build intricate narratives and instant visions. Manley, Matt

Currently based in Marshall, Michigan, Matt Manley has been working as a freelance illustrator for over twenty years. His illustration is primarily figurative and symbolic with surrealist leanings, and past client work includes editorial, corporate, medical, book, and higher education. Though in the end his work is technically digital collage, the process integrates both traditional and digital media. Falconer, Sam

Sam Falconer’s illustrations combining vibrant characters and intricate environments have been commissioned by clients ranging from leading national newspapers to renowned science magazines and universities.

Initially working purely by hand, Sam discovered a passion for digital collage in 2010 which later developed into his own unique brand of rich and detailed imagery. This method allows him to develop and turnover complex pieces with diverse character sets in timeframes that suit each client’s needs.

As a big science and technology fan, Sam has developed a strong presence in the field with clients including Nature, Nautilus, New Scientist, The Royal Society of Chemistry, Scientific American and Wired magazine. in 2015 Sam was commissioned by the acclaimed MIT Museum to rework their map designs for the general public.

Sam has a BA in Illustration and Animation from Kingston University and graduated in 2011.

Rosenbaum, Jonathan & Georgina

Jonathan and Georgina Rosenbaum have been two of the premier food and beverage illustrators since the early 90s working with clients as diverse as Pepsi, Seagram’s, Nestle, Kraft, Gillette, Pfizer and Orville Redenbacher. During the days of conventional airbrush they worked as a team creating different aspects of an illustration. Making the transition to digital in the mid- 90s enabled the Rosenbaums to improve both consistency and timing over a product line. This made them a sort of super illustrator, perhaps a major movie deal is in the wings? Multiple piece projects are a specialty, such as a recent 600+ illustration packaging assignment for a national supermarket brand, 75 illustrations for a national pharmacy chain and 30 illustrations for a private label group. Subjects included fruit, vegetables, candy, chocolate, desserts, drinks, juice, water, splashes, and pours.This is in addition to a number of smaller, but no less important, projects for loyal clients who will only accept the Rosenbaum's style and quality, a Herculean effort and one that would not have been possible had they not been a team.

Strain, Peter

Peter Strain is an AOI (Association of Illustrators) Critics' Choice Award-winning illustrator based in Belfast.

Jovellanos, Arielle

It’s impossible not to love the comic book style of Arielle Jovellanos. Fresh and light in tone, it’s set to take the graphic novel aesthetic into all sorts of new areas and Arielle is clearly an artist with a passion for visual storytelling.

Her big breakthrough came with her 2015 high school romance School Spirit – 60 pages of high quality artwork. The publication received an Eisner nomination, which is the pinnacle in the world of comics. Today the artist is working with a range of top names in publishing, and looking for new people to collaborate with bringing stories to life.

A Filipina-American, Arielle grew up watching Disney movies and drawing her own variations on Sailor Moon in the margins of her schoolbooks. Today, she loves musical theatre, collects playbills, and her biggest influences are the manga artist Rumiko Takahashi, the book Howl’s Moving Castle, and Studio Ghibli’s movie Kiki’s Delivery Service.

Arielle graduated from Parsons The New School for Design with a dual degree in Illustration and Fiction writing in 2014.

Most of Arielle’s work is entirely digital – she sketches, draws the lines and colours her images on her Cintiq tablet. Pinks, blues and purples form her main palette.

Everything is a character’ is a piece of advice that guides Arielle’s comic art style. It means she focuses on creating tiny narratives within each image, using body language, facial expression, clothing and background detail. This builds personality in her work and makes people viewing it wonder what will happen next.

Turnbull, Tracy

After graduating, Tracy Turnbull worked in fashion design for several years and along the way began accepting illustration commissions for fashion books. Later editorial clients came knocking and it turned into a full-time thing. She combines her career in fashion illustration with teaching the subject at Northumbria University. At her home in Newcastle she has a husband, and a dog called Dave. She’s scared of fish, used to be a goth and has performed at Glastonbury.

Tracy graduated from Newcastle Polytechnic (now Northumbria University) with a BA Hons in Fashion Design.

Initial drawings are done either on paper, or on screen using her Wacom Cintiq. Tracy then colours her work digitally using Photoshop.

Just as fashion is always evolving and changing, Tracy likes to keep her work fresh and contemporary. Her style changes a lot, influenced by what’s current in illustration as well as what’s on the catwalk. When she gets bored with one style, she experiments and adapts. Lately, she’s been working in pencil and mixing it with strong colour.

She likes to draw strong characters with unusual features, and her training in fashion design certainly comes in handy when she renders garments. She understands clothing construction, proportions, and how draped fabrics look, which comes across in her work.

Malan, David

Like all kids, David found he loved to draw at a young age. He stuck with it through his whole life and has developed a frank, accurate approach to portraying the emotions of the subject. His influences have long included many classical artists of the 19th century and Golden Age illustrators. David studied Illustration at Brigham Young University and worked for over a decade as a Disney artist while refining his illustrative style. He can handle a range from light and stylized to realistic and accurate and has worked with clients from editorial, publishing, advertising, video game design, even coin design for the U.S. Mint. David lives with his artistic wife and four muse children in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Ceolin, Andre

André Ceolin is a self-taught illustrator from Brazil He started his first attempt at sketching around the age of four when his father brought home some reams of paper from work. It was in that moment that he fell in love with painting and drawing. André initially got a degree in pharmacy at UNIMEP. Though he worked in this field for several years, his artistic passion was too strong to ignore. As a young father, he was surrounded by beautiful children’s books and was always drawn to the spontaneity of the imagery. He then decided to switch gears and studied at School of Visual Arts in NYC, Melies, and Escola Panamericana de Artes to develop a signature look and learned new illustration techniques. He illustrated his first book “Um Dia na Vida de Micaela” de Cauê by Steinberg Milano, published by Editora Roda & Cia in 2009. Ever since, he has illustrated over 20 books by great publishers in Brazil such as Roda & Cia, Saber e Ler, SM, Moderna, FTD, Editora do Brasil, Editora Abril. He loves working with books targeting juvenile readers from the very young age to middle-grade and young adult. When not illustrating, he creates toys and small sculptures for his son. He also enjoys bicycling, playing his guitar, and, singing.

Diaz, Maine

Born in La Plata, Argentina, Maine Diaz, grew up drawing and painting. She was often seen drawing with her pencils or crayons in deep concentration. Cartoons captured her imagination early on and realized immediately that she wants to be an animator when she grows up. Her mother, a biochemist and grandfather were truly flabbergasted upon hearing her declaration. At the age of 16 she took a workshop and start animating, working in films like Patoruzito, El Arca (Patagonik, Argentina), Gizaku and Nocturna (Filmax, Spain). Simultaneously, she enrolled in Audiovisual Communication at Universidad DeLa Plata (UNLP). Soon after, she also started illustrating for children’s story books and educational books. In 2002 with Crimsomnia Studio, she was a finalist at Ford’s “Saldras mas” publicity contest, with “Habitos noctunos” short. In 2005 she won first prize for the character design category of Bizpills (Hi Impatc Learning Experiences), España.

Currently, Maine lives in a tiny green house where she spends time with her two cats, Chula and Lola. She loves tending her garden while Chula eats all the plants and Lola jumps and climbs the trees. Maine prefers to be barefoot while painting and singing in her studio. She is a pretty good cook and sweated several years near the oven and many pans. When not illustrating, she also enjoys swimming, writing, taking photos.

Flores, Jose Emroca

Jose Emroca Flores grew up in a humble family of four from Northern Nevada where he spent much of his youth actively outdoors skateboarding, playing baseball, and snowboarding. He has always been creative and imaginative on paper and outdoors. Building makeshift skate ramps from scrapwood was the norm in his childhood. He’d round up the kids from the cul-de-sac and they’d skate late into the evenings. He moved to California after high school to play baseball and pursue his art. Emroca later attended the Academy of Art in San Francisco where he learned to develop the ability to materialize his imagination while advancing his technique as a visual artist. On his downtime from school, he’d still skateboard and snowboard and started to surf in the sharky cold San Francisco waters. It was then when he stumbled upon his forever two loves of his life: his new found passion for the ocean and his beautiful wife. When he graduated from the Academy of Art, he immediately went to work as a visual development artist in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. In the course of his work on films, games, animation, books, and advertising, his original oil paintings were shown in galleries across the U.S.
