Cooper, Matthew

Matthew Cooper studied illustration at Harrow College of Higher Education and since graduating has worked as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer. Matthew's illustrations utilise a variety of techniques and media; from collage and found imagery to painting and drawing, from photography to computer based work. He is particularly interested in the use of typographic and strong graphic elements within his work. He finds his inspiration in the work of, amongst others, Herbert Matter, Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenburg, Kurt Schwitters and the Constructivists; in the music of Will Oldham, John Fahey and Lightning Bolt; and in the piles of books, magazines, records, CDs and assorted junk, both ancient and modern, that threaten to over-run both his home and his Shoreditch studio space. As well as his illustration work, Matthew works as a freelance graphic designer, primarily for the independent music sector. Projects range from sleeve design, through to the design of adverts and promotional material. He has worked with such luminaries as Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, Four Tet, The Kills and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. Manley, Matt

Currently based in Marshall, Michigan, Matt Manley has been working as a freelance illustrator for over twenty years. His illustration is primarily figurative and symbolic with surrealist leanings, and past client work includes editorial, corporate, medical, book, and higher education. Though in the end his work is technically digital collage, the process integrates both traditional and digital media. Collage elements are original oil paintings and drawings, with occasional scanned found objects and photos added to the mix, all united in Photoshop.

Horvath, Peter

Peter Horvath, born of Hungarian descent into a lineage of photographers, began taking pictures at age 6. After spending his formative years inhaling darkroom fumes, he worked as a stills photographer until he discovered computers in 1995 when a friend gave him a Macintosh Plus. Shortly thereafter, he happened across the work of Dadaists John Heartfield and Hannah Hoch, whose work exposed him to the world of photo-montage. He has since produced digital collage works exploring narrative, abstraction, and the hypnagogic, and continues to push the boundaries of convention, displacing the familiar and nostalgic with unique, surreal touches. Peter’s ability to master bold compositions that convey complex concepts is what makes his work stand out. His impactful images make him a natural choice for the nuances of editorial work, and the call-to-action needs of advertising. His work is featured in the newly published book from Die Gestalten, "Illusive - Contemporary Illustration", as well as an upcoming book on collage.

Peter has been awarded numerous grants from The Canada Council for the Arts for his new media work, and is the recipient of commissions from Rhizome.org at The New Museum, NYC (2005) and Turbulence.org New Radio and Performing Arts, Boston (2004). He has exhibited in museums and galleries across the globe including the Whitney Museum Of American Art‘s Artport (NYC), Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporaneo (Mexico City), the Musee national des beaux-arts du Quebec (Quebec City, Canada) and FILE Electronic Language International Festival (Sao Paulo, Brazil).

Loeffler, Max

Max was born in rural Germany in 1989 and started out illustrating extensive album artworks for punk and metal bands after doing his homework. After graduating from the Graphic Design department at Hochschule Darmstadt in 2017, he began working as a freelancer with renowned clients like The New Yorker, The New York Times, Adidas and Google. He still enjoys creating artwork for bands.

Influenced by the classic surrealists as well as retro science-fiction book covers, he likes to look below the surface of one-to-one visual translations, adding meaning and room for inference by wrapping his illustrations in the dense atmosphere of a surreal and melancholic parallel universe. His urge is to translate and decipher what can only be felt, not directly seen, and to amplify this visually, particularly in his personal work.

Funderburgh, Dan

Dan Funderburgh is a Brooklyn-based illustrator, artist, and wallpaper designer whose creations are rooted in the world of decorative arts. Dan was born in Seattle and reared in the Midwest, receiving a BFA from the University of Kansas with a focus in illustration. After moving to New York in 2001, Dan established a partnership with the now Brooklyn-based wallpaper studio Flavorpaper, where his designs are hand-screen printed. The wallpapers have been featured at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair and at Pulse Miami, and are a part of the Cooper-Hewitt's permanent collection. Occasional collaborations with companies like Brooks, Furni, and Gravis have allowed the work to live on bicycle seats, furniture, and luggage. Dan's personal and gallery work includes letterpress and screen prints, sculptures and installations that play off of historical ornamentation. Revealing an acute appreciation for both the baroque and utilitarian, Dan's work often combines the language of ornament with objects that surround us. Wilson, Joe

Leicester-born Joe Wilson studied at Leeds Metropolitan University, Graduating with a bachelor of arts degree in Graphic Arts and Design in 2007. After a lifetime of drawing and doodling Joe Wilson became serious about being an artist at an early age and has left himself 'no other option'. Joe Wilson took an interest in printmaking at university and studied this heavily in his final year, with a great deal of his work taking the form of screen prints and etchings. This forms the foundation of Joe Wilson's work today, although since finishing university and leaving the print facilities, other ways of creating similar effects have had to be employed. Joe Wilson's work consists of painstakingly detailed, hand-drawn illustrations, usually in fine-line pen or pencil, that are then scanned and edited on the mac. Joe Wilson takes his influence from an array of sources including old engravings, 70s Vinyl covers and surrealist art. Joe Wilson is particularly interested in ideas of evolution, space, and complex constructions. Joe Wilson's unique drawing style attracts a mixture of different clients from editorial to fashion, he has produced work for clients such as: The Guardian, Adidas, 21st Amendment, Mojo magazine, Prospect Magazine, RKCR/Y&R, The Yards, Peter Werth, The Big Chill Festival, and Topshop. With aspirations to establish himself firmly as an illustrator, he hopes to work on many more commercial projects whilst continuing to produce his personal 'thought experiments' for his own pleasure.

The Red Dress

The Red Dress is a London based Illustration duo, Olivia Chancellor and Ollie Bland. This husband and wife team met while studying Graphic Design and Illustration at Central St. Martins in 1996. The Red Dress' love for all types of Vintage posters (especially B-Movies) and Pulp Fiction illustration has inspired Olivia and Ollie to join creative forces. Drawing upon over 10 years experience in Fashion, T.V/Film, the Art world, Illustration and Design, The Red Dress produce striking, often dark but humorous images by painting Contemporary Culture in a Retro style. This usually includes bold hand drawn typography. Using Oils and Acrylics as well as computer based painting they can work from sourced photographic images or freestyle.

Phillips, Craig

Craig phillips has been providing illustrations to the publishing and advertising industries in the United States, Australia and Europe for over a decade. He has created book jackets and interior art for Random House, Penguin, Scholastic, Simon & Schuster, Hachette Book Group, TOR Books, Wizards Of The Coast, Oxford University Press and many more. He has created tour posters for Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters and provided editorial work to many publications including Rolling Stone Magazine. His work has been included in art annuals such as Spectrum 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18, Society Of Illustrators 53, Luerzers 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide, The Art Of Modern Rock, A Fistful Of Rock, Creative Quarterly 16 and 23. Work has also been exhibited at the Society of Illustrators 53 Book Illustration exhibition in New York, the 2nd Spectrum exhibition at the Museum of American Illustration, a group exhibition at the Erskine gallery in Sydney and a solo exhibition at the University of Arkansas in Florida.

George, Patrick

Peter Scott's (a.k.a PatrickGeorge) skills of illustration and design are largely concept-driven, clean, punchy and witty. He enjoys working on his own children's books (A drove of bullocks, A filth of starlings, Little Miss Muffet and other rhymes, and Opposites published by PatrickGeorge), but his style works equally well in a corporate and media context. PatrickGeorge’s previous clients include Toyota, GQ, Royal Mail, Houses of Parliament, Kent tourism and The Times. He has also produced a book of names which is a playful typographical treatment of 100 boys and 100 girls names (What's in a name?)

Neil lives and works in Brighton. Trained in technical illustration then went on to become a creative in major ad agency. Baker, Andrew

Andrew Baker is a successful practicing illustrator, with a strong reputation in editorial illustration and poster design. He won a Gold Award for Editorial illustrator from the Association of Illustrators in 2003, and his work has been featured in the Design, New Media and Editorial sections of the AOI Images Annual and in the D&AD annual. His work is seen in most serious newspapers and magazines, from The Guardian to New Scientist, and in on-line environments, shop windows and on posters and book covers. He is primarily concerned with using images for storytelling or conveying messages. Drawing, colour, a love for ephemera and an eye for retro design inform his work. Projects are started with drawing and completed using illustrator and Photoshop in a distinctive way. Much of his work is designed to be seen in sequential form, for example sequences of images for The Economist or the BBC web-site, but he remains passionate about the power of the single key image. Andrew Baker is a graduate of the Royal College of Art and teaches part-time on the illustration course at Middlesex University. He recently curated the SHED exhibition and contributed to Steady Gigs, The Charity Shop Compendium and Doodlearth. Herring, Matthew

Matt uses a montage of found & self-generated graphic material to create assured, vibrant images for the Publishing, Design & Advertising industries. These images are selected from recent projects. They range from book jackets, magazine covers, newspaper features, instore signage, billboard posters, through to direct mail, annual reports & advertising campaigns. The work falls into several stylistic categories. Firstly a traditional collage & photo montage approach used predominantly for editorial work. With other images he’s employed a more graphic approach, using flat colour, vector shapes & simple lines to create a more contemporary feel. Hanson, Sarah

Sarah's work is combination of traditional handmade and digital collage. Inspired by her travels and an avid collector of random ephemera, she finds and stores interesting bits of old paper, maps, photographs and various objects, which have all become strong elements in her work. For every new project she has a unique sift through the random piles, sketchbooks and pads that have accumulated around her studio selecting suitable elements as she goes. Bauer, Carla

Carla Bauer has been president of Carla Bauer Design for over thirty years. The firm's clients have covered a broad range of industries and included Prudential, General Electric, Genworth Financial, Dow Jones, Deutsche Bank, PaineWebber, EF Hutton, Travelers™ Insurance, Kidder Peabody, McGraw, Hill, IBM, Estee Lauder, Aramids, Christian Dior, Time Life Medical, Redbook Magazine, NewYork Transit Museum, E & J Gallo Winery. The group provides marketing and design consultation, and produces print collateral, advertising, package design and corporate communications.

She also works as a woodcut illustrator. Her clients in this area have included: National Geographic, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Franklin Library, The New York Times, AH Robins, CTW, Environmental Defense Fund, Natural History Magazine, Franklin Watts, American Express, Borghese, Estee Lauder, Aramis.

Books illustrated are Harriet Tubman, Secret Agent, for National Geographic, the children's book Thanksgiving, two volumes of Euripides for The Franklin Library and a book of poetry by Jason Bell.

Stutzman, Mark

Best known for his record breaking 1993 Elvis Stamp, Mark has gone on to produce volumes of illustration for countless uses with his heaviest concentration of personalities in the entertainment industry for Broadway, film, music and performance arts.

Goudappel, Aad

He translates complex ideas and abstract themes into clear and powerful images. Aad creates illustrations that at first glance seem very simple. His distinctive style is characterized by the use of flat areas of color and the complete absence of lines. On closer look the mildly alienating images often contain multiple intellectual or emotional layers. This approach leads to works that are both timeless and contemporary.

Chivers, Sam

For several years I lead a double life. During the day I worked for a Design/Illustration studio producing work in a wide variety of styles for many different clients. Whilst in my spare time I was exploring more creative preoccupations though self-directed projects, often just enjoying a bit of creative freedom away from the pressures of the commercial world and being told what to do all the time.

Bringing together my love of drawing and geeking out on the computer, these quite often ended up as screen prints. Screen print is a process I’ve grown to love because of the restraints it imposes, I loved trying to create a sense of depth with just three or four layers. Often mistakes would be surprisingly pleasing.

After a while of incubation this work began attracting commercial clients (as I hoped it would) and eventually I made the leap to doing it full time.

My work naturally veers towards that blurry border point between science and nature. Recently I’ve become aware of how much I’m influenced by the countryside in which I live, and my tendency to fictionalise it through drawing.

My ambitions with my work are to keep making it better and continue to evolve as an artist. Presently my output mutated into a two pronged beast; I make these airbrushed sci-fi landscapes and then more hand drawn limited palette pieces – my aim is to carry on joining the dots in between these two styles somehow unifying them more.

Berry Rhys, Alan

Alan Berry Rhys is a graphic artist and illustrator home based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He has been a graphic design professor at Buenos Aires University for 8 years. As an artist, I have produced several solo shows at Buenos Aires (Argentina), Rosario (Argentina), San Francisco (CA, USA) and Santiago de Chile (Chile). In addition, Alan has participated in several combined shows, at Portland (Oregon, USA), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Tandil (Argentina) and Asunción (Paraguay). He has been invited to the last 3 editions of Puma Urban Art in Buenos Aires.
He's worked for a wide range of commercial and commissioned works for brands developing graphic universes and illustrations.
Vintage graphic advertising inspires his work. He loves the look of low-fi printing. It's errors and limitations that give his work a distinctive characteristic. Using screen-printing, risograph and painting, Alan has developed a style based on low quality printing methods of the early graphic advertising. He also has extended work on lettering and typography.
In the search of inspiration of a simpler life he explores craftsmanship lifestyles, such as fishermen, axmen, butchers, carpenters, etc. In addition, he also enjoys exploring popular street graphic.
Alan has worked for brands such as Jack Daniel's, Absolut Vodka, Nike, Puma, Sol Beer, Cinzano, Vans, Oreo, Good Year, Penguin, California Customs, Pilgrim London, BlackFin, Gravedad Zero.

Borge, Richard

My evolution in fast forward: Madagascar, Fargo, Tucson, Asheville, Manhattan... ultimately landed in Brooklyn. I work primarily on editorial and corporate / advertising illustration and animation / motion design. I am well versed in visual consulting and creative direction. One of my favorite aspects of visual communication is the conceptual process, be it selling a product or conveying the intricacies of a complex article.

Falconer, Sam

Sam Falconer’s illustrations combining vibrant characters and intricate environments have been commissioned by clients ranging from leading national newspapers to renowned science magazines and universities.

Initially working purely by hand, Sam discovered a passion for digital collage in 2010 which later developed into his own unique brand of rich and detailed imagery. This method allows him to develop and turnover complex pieces with diverse character sets in timeframes that suit each client’s needs.

As a big science and technology fan, Sam has developed a strong presence in the field with clients including Nature, Nautilus, New Scientist, The Royal Society of Chemistry, Scientific American and Wired magazine. in 2015 Sam was commissioned by the acclaimed MIT Museum to rework their map designs for the general public.

In 2014 Sam was featured in IdN magazine’s New Faces of Inspiration issue as one of ten leading illustrators in the editorial field. His work was also exhibited in Taoyan city, Taiwan as part of Dpi magazine’s Space Odyssey exhibition.

Sam has a BA in Illustration and Animation from Kingston University and graduated in 2011.

Salerno, Steven

NYC based illustrator Steven Salerno creates stylized illustrations ranging from graphically simple and whimsical, to more realistic and richly textured imagery with some also having a retro feel. All are anchored in traditional drawing skills reflective of his admiration for select artists and illustrators from past eras.

Over his long independent graphics career Steven has created thousands of published illustrations for nearly 600 clients, for use in print & web advertising, editorial magazines and newspapers, product packaging, corporate publications, retail graphics, and publishing.

To date Steven has also illustrated 36 popular picture books for children, with 5 of these titles as both author and illustrator. His most recent author/illustrator picture book title is "Tim's Goodbye," published by Farrar Straus Giroux 2018, the gentle story of Margot and friends gathering to give their heartfelt impromptu goodbye to a beloved pet that has died.

UPDATE: Steven has illustrated the upcoming wonderful nonfiction picture book, "On the Corner of Chocolate Avenue -How Milton Hershey Brought Milk Chocolate To America" -written by Tziporah Cohen & illustrated by Steven Salerno, to be released by Clarion Books/Harper Collins in December 2022. It’s the life story of American Milton Hershey, the poor kid from Pennsylvania who built his company, HERSHEY’S, into one of the largest manufacturers of chocolate in the world. "On the Corner of Chocolate Avenue" is a Junior Library Guild GOLD STANDARD Selection for 2022.

Some of Steven's picture books have been translated into Chinese, German, Korean, Japanese, Arabic, and Spanish. His picture books have received industry starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, School Library Journal, Children's Literature, The New York Times Review of Books, and have been displayed by the Society of Illustrators (NYC) in their annual children's picture book art exhibition, The Original Art. Steven's illustrations have been recognized for excellence by Communication Arts, Print, Society for News Design, Society of Publication Designers, The Art Director's Club, Society of Illustrators, and the Junior Library Guild.

Originally from Vermont, Steven was an honors graduate of the Illustration Department at Parsons School of Design in New York City, where he studied art history, printmaking, animation, and illustration under top industry professionals including famed author/illustrator Maurice Sendak, of the ground breaking picture book "Where the Wild Things Are." Steven is primarily engaged with illustrating and writing picture books for kids, but also still creates illustrations for clients in advertising, magazines, newspapers, corporate publications, and product packaging.

Strain, Peter

Peter Strain is an AOI (Association of Illustrators) Critics' Choice Award-winning illustrator based in Belfast.
He specializes in creating carefully composed, hand-rendered illustration and typography and always tries to experiment with texture and mark-making techniques to keep his work evolving.
His work is hugely influenced by film and music and aims to tackle social, political and cultural issues with a highly distinctive hand lettering style, bold imagery and humour.

Nielsen, Cliff

Cliff Nielsen studied traditional and digital illustration and graduated as valedictorian from Art Center College of Design in 1994. Corey Brickley was born in the U.S. In 1987 and now lives and works as an illustrator and designer in Philadelphia.

Corey Brickley is a graduate of the University of the Arts' Illustration program in Philadelphia, PA. Corey creates concept-driven illustrations for editorial, publishing, music and advertising. Fuentes, Edu

Born in Madrid and currently based in London, Edu Fuentes has been working as a freelance illustrator since 2003, combining a wide range of commercial projects with personal work and exhibitions.

With a combination of bold colours and geometry, his artwork orbits between the symbolic and the mechanical, playing with depth of field and multilayered objects. He is inspired by science, cinema and pop culture, and makes a sisyphean attempt to learn Japanese every once in a while.

Marcin Wolski is an illustrator and graphic designer with several years of experience in advertising, and editorial illustration. He began his artistic journey with traditional media, slowly moving to digital art. He lives and works in Sopot, Poland.

In his illustrations, Marcin tries to capture specific mood using simple shapes, colour and light to distill the essence of the story that he tries to tell in each illustration. His inspirations come from retro games and Polish socialist-era posters as well as modern illustration.

McCollum, Sudi

Sudi McCollum grew up in a creative household with a crazy-ass artist mother and an advertising executive father (he won a Clio!).  She graduated from California College of the Arts with a degree in fine arts.  However, as soon as Sudi graduated, she embarked on a successful career in graphic design, which was much more to her liking.  It was the graphic quality of graphic design that so appealed to her and most all of her art has a noticeable graphic quality to it. Howell, Sarah

Sarah Howell works mainly with figurative and fashion imagery. Collaborating with photographers, she initiates a work with a collage base, and then scans drawings and paintings with various mixed media techniques to create a textured artwork. Nancy began her career like many illustrators do - crayoning on walls. Back then it was considered a bad habit, now she gets paid for it. In fact, she's doodled her way into a great career. While she now live in the U.S., she spent a big chunk of her life in Montreal (that's Mo-ray-al, if you wanna sound French). She went to Art school (big "A" like painting, printmaking, sculpture, and makin' a mess), and studied Graphic Design & Illustration, graduating with a B.F.A., and an M.A. from Syracuse, a much bigger box of crayons, and a big black portfolio to drag around. She has worked as an Art Director & V.P. for an ad agency where she learned "work week" means 80 hours, budgets are ALWAYS less than your quote, and art directors supply free psychotherapy to clients. All this helped her start her own business and she's never looked back: She loves commuting in her slippers (but sometimes hates her boss). Chris Cocozza, an award winning romance bookcover artist, has illustrated 100's of book covers for major publishers across the United States and around the world.

As a young person, his talent was recognized by Jack Davis, one of Mad Magazines' creators and famed cartoonists, who then helped to mentor Chris early in his artistic life.

Mr. Davis provided perspective, insight and grounding at a very critical time, and helped Chris to understand the demands and commitments needed to pursue an artist's life.

Chris started his academic career by studying in New York City at various institutions of higher education; The School of Visual Arts, The Arts Students League and the National Academy of Design where he honed his skills as a traditional painter and draftsman.

Following in the footsteps of some of his most inspirational artists and teachers, Chris set out to traditionally paint the figure for the bookcover industry, first breaking in with the western and young adult genres, and expanding to romance, action and mystery genres.

In the early 90's, with the advent of digital media, Chris easily made the transition to the new techniques and tools without sacrificing his mastery of the "traditional techniques".

Chris was one of the first romance illustrators to embrace the new technology and continues to be one of it's foremost pioneers into the 21st century. His work is studied in many universities across the country.

Chris continues to embrace the incredible joy that these tools and creating great illustrative images bring him and others.
