Hanson, Sarah

Sarah's work is combination of traditional handmade and digital collage. Inspired by her travels and an avid collector of random ephemera, she finds and stores interesting bits of old paper, maps, photographs and various objects, which have all become strong elements in her work. For every new project she has a unique sift through the random piles, sketchbooks and pads that have accumulated around her studio selecting suitable elements as she goes. Previous clients include GQ, The Times, British Airways, Penguin, BBC Worldwide Ltd, Publicis, More Magazine, Waitrose, Caspian Publishing, Radio Times, Age Concern, Harper Collins, Renault, Delicious Magazine and The AOI.

Falconer, Sam

Sam Falconer’s illustrations combining vibrant characters and intricate environments have been commissioned by clients ranging from leading national newspapers to renowned science magazines and universities.

Initially working purely by hand, Sam discovered a passion for digital collage in 2010 which later developed into his own unique brand of rich and detailed imagery. This method allows him to develop and turnover complex pieces with diverse character sets in timeframes that suit each client’s needs.

As a big science and technology fan, Sam has developed a strong presence in the field with clients including Nature, Nautilus, New Scientist, The Royal Society of Chemistry, Scientific American and Wired magazine. in 2015 Sam was commissioned by the acclaimed MIT Museum to rework their map designs for the general public.

In 2014 Sam was featured in IdN magazine’s New Faces of Inspiration issue as one of ten leading illustrators in the editorial field. His work was also exhibited in Taoyan city, Taiwan as part of Dpi magazine’s Space Odyssey exhibition.

Sam has a BA in Illustration and Animation from Kingston University and graduated in 2011.

Based in Barcelona, Spain, Pietari Posti creates contemporary scenes with unique personalities for magazines, advertising, product, publishing, posters and newspapers. Lovell, Andy

Andy’s work as an illustrator and printmaker is informed by making drawings and paintings from life which are then revisited through the medium of print. The original drawings are not an end in themselves but rather aim to catch the essence of a place in a form that can be translated to print back in the studio. He is drawn to the immediacy that the screen-print and monotype processes both allow and encourage and which result in a gestural and often graphic interpretation of these initial sketches and paintings done on location that capture a real sense of mood and place.

Andy’s printmaking is represented through galleries across the UK whist, as an illustrator he has worked on a wide range of commercial commissions, across the publishing, editorial, advertising and design sectors.

Miller, Doug John

Doug’s drawings focus on architecture and detail featuring colourful, highly detailed compositions of surreal and fantastical architecture. His architectural drawing has been published and exhibited internationally including at The Royal Academy, The Slade and Roca Gallery’s. His illustration work has been commissioned by publications such as The New York Times, Wired and Empire Magazine. Alongside editorial work Doug has worked for companies such as Netflix on concept design for films, often directly with the film makers themselves, helping bring their architectural visions to life.

Doug completed his bachelor’s and Masters degrees in Architecture at UCL where his project ‘The San Francisco Columbarium’ won him the SOM Fellowship, Bartlett and Donaldson Medals. Doug now teaches part time running architecture and landscape design studios at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL.

Stewart-Croker, Jess

Recent illustration graduate Jess Stewart-Croker, is well on her way to carving out a path for herself. Primarily working with traditional media, such as watercolour, gouache and pen and ink, Jess creates painterly and colourful imagery. She has already grabbed a number of impressive assignments for several companies, including several private commissions. Jess can also quite frequently be found with sketchbook in hand making her way through a museum looking for inspiration in the historical references around her. Williams, Dan

I am a graduate of the Royal College of Art and am currently living in London renovating a large old Victorian house and building a magnificent studio. My time is divided between illustration, painting on location and lecturing. For me all 3 disciplines feed each other, keeping me on my toes and keen to explore new uses for my work. Penny, Mara

Mara grew up in Lake Tahoe. She loves color, patterns, texture and line.
Mara studied both interior design and jewelry design in college and earned her BFA at CCA(C).
She is a mother, a wife, a sister and a daughter.
She is inspired by fairy tales, the night sky and sparkles.
Mara likes to draw, paint, sew and read.

Coyle, Laura

Laura Coyle creates distinctive art with wide appeal. Her clients include major brands like Target, Amazon.com, Disney and publications including Better Homes and Gardens and The Wall Street Journal.

Laura made her first foray into product design with Hasbro. She was called upon to refresh the classic Parcheesi board game, a design that had remained unchanged since the early 1900's. The challenge was to create illustrations that would highlight the game's origins in India and enhance its appeal to kids today. In working on Parcheesi, she discovered a love for designing products that can connect with people every day.

Since then, Laura's gift bag, wrap and paper ware designs have appeared on the shelves at Target, Papyrus and Hallmark.

Laura grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, and earned her BFA from Auburn University. She started her freelance career living in the East Village in New York City, dropping her portfolios off with art directors while working part time as an assistant to renowned jazz photographer Jimmy Katz. Laura now lives back in her hometown with her husband Clayton, an architect, in their 1950's ranch house which they renovated together.

Starr, Jim

Wagenfeld, Bernd

Bernd Wagenfeld is a freelance illustrator with a huge variety of styles, but working mainly realistic and photorealistic. He has more than 15 years of experience and a broad skill set. His main clients include ad agencies and publishers.

Hall, Mike

Crowded urban scenes, architecture and maps – the things you see today in Mike Hall’s artwork go back to his creative beginnings. As a child he used to love drawing images full of people, and maps of imaginary towns and even entire countries. He says this might be because he grew up in the new town of Harlow in Essex – the modern, pre-planned, post-war setting gave him an interest in architecture, topography and mapping from an early age.

Of course, he liked comics and picture books too, and today he’s also inspired by William Hogarth, Gustave Doré and Wenceslaus Hollar, as well as MacDonald Gill, an artist who embellished his map illustrations with all kinds of colourful motifs. He loves everything Hispanic, which is why he recently relocated to Spain.

Mike spent two years studying graphic design before switching to an illustration course. He completed an Illustration degree at the University of Westminster.

Often Mike’s hand-drawn imagery is embellished using a computer. He combines print designs he’s drawn using pen on paper with digital elements to build up an image. The colouring is done digitally. Sometimes, he’ll also draw his map designs using vector graphics.

Architecture usually plays a large role in Mike’s work – either as the primary focus of the illustration, or as something in the background that gives it structure. He’s very interested in topographical views, geography and conveying a sense of place. Nonetheless, his characters come through just as strongly with crowded, colourful people scenes giving you plenty to look at.

Cerato, Mattia

Mattia was born in Cuneo, a small town surrounded by the beautiful Italian Alps. At 2-3 years old, besides eating a lot of pasta, his father (an artist in his own right!) introduced and encouraged Mattia to draw. As a result, he spent most of his time creating funny images on every surface he could find. When Mattia grew up, he decided to study illustration at the European Institute of Design (IED) in Turin. Within eight months of graduation, he landed his first Illustration job, a book titled My First Picture Dictionary for Rass Language House, Hong Kong. Mattia resides in Cuneo and when not illustrating, he enjoys playing basketball, traveling around the world, playing his bass guitar, and skiing on the Alps.

Minick, Samuel A.

Minick uses bold pen-like lines, thoughtful composition and a saturated palette. Sam has sixteen years of experience as a freelance illustrator and eight years as a graphic journalist. He has created work for Volkswagen, Kelloggs, Field & Stream, Smithsonian Magazine, Ringling Museum and Adobe. His tenure in the newsroom makes him a reliable resource for dynamic, accurate and integral visuals on tight deadlines.

Haynes, Jim

If you need a fun, stylized, but still navigable map, Jim Haynes is the guy to go to. His maps are humorous and creative but they give a reliable overview of a city, state or region. His cartoonier work is bound to make you smile.

Watkinson, Mark

Born in Gloucestershire and growing up in Lincolnshire, Mark originally wanted to be a mechanic. However, one of his teachers suggested he pursue a career in art and he’s been a successful freelance illustrator since the early 80s. He plays percussion in a band called the B1200s, collects old cars and enjoys a game of tennis. His early influences include Gavin McLeod and Philip Castle.

Mark earned a diploma and then a higher diploma in Graphic Design from the Lincoln College of Art.

Keep it clean, clear and simple is Mark’s mantra. He works in Freehand, Illustrator and Photoshop, as well as using traditional media.

Mark’s style is very graphic with strong line work, and usually employs flat colours. His work is ideal for ‘how to’ images and infographics, with isometric viewpoints and, sometimes, a blueprint feel. He enjoys tackling technical challenges, but also produces more playful and conceptual work.

Maravillas, Jennifer

With Filipino and European roots, and with freckles from head to toe, Jennifer Maravillas feels as if she’s on a detective-like quest to understand as many different perspectives as possible. Her roots as an artist, meanwhile, go back to her training in ballet as a child. She sees her art as a kind of ballet performed on paper using a marker.

She rarely restricts herself to just a marker, though. Watercolour, spray paint and various other media are used in her illustrations. As a side project, she has made a map of Brooklyn out of garbage, and in future plans to try and map as much of the world as she can. On top of painting, her passions are anthropology and sociology.

Jennifer did an undergraduate degree is in Graphic Design at the University of Louisville and a graduate degree is in Mass Communication at Virginia Commonwealth University.

The techniques Jennifer uses are constantly changing, and her style often comes as a result of the medium she’s exploring at a given time. By and large she’s a mixed media artist, always trying new materials and combinations of them – typically they include watercolour markers, ink, spray paint, pencil, cut out paper, block printing, and Photoshop. Sometimes she allows a composition to evolve without knowing what the end result might be like, other times she has a clear idea in her head of what she wants.

Jennifer is fascinated by the digital process. She scans in every doodle and texture she draws or paints, keeping them for reference or for use as layers in new pieces.

Jennifer uses vibrant colour combinations as she builds up maps, cityscapes and scenery from hundreds of smaller handmade elements. Some of her influences include Werner Herzog, Mary Blair, Guy Debord, and Buckminster Fuller.

Napier, Martha

When Martha Napier took the leap and became a full-time freelance illustrator in 2013, the world of fashion design lost a wonderful creator, but the world of illustration gained an excellent artist. Martha’s vivid watercolours and loose, almost naïve style, have given a lighthearted lift to all kinds of interesting projects in fashion, advertising, editorial and more. She also does live painting for clients, and was named a top illustrator to watch on Instragram by InStyle magazine.

Martha was born in the Midwest, grew up in Germany, and today splits her time between Chicago and New York. She loves fashion – that much is clear – and her most admired designers include Miuccia Prada, Marni, and Phoebe Philo. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri Matisse and Cy Twombly are three artists that inspire her.

Beyond art and fashion, she’s had a fascinating life. She’s travelled to the North Pole, and to the Galapagos Islands. “The only place I’ve seen a cactus, a flamingo and a penguin in the same location,” she says.

Martha has a BA in Studio Art from Wake Forest University, and was a Presidential Scholar at the same college in Fine Art. She discovered her love of fashion illustration at the Parsons School of Design, where she studied for a post grad degree in Fashion Design.

Watercolours are Martha’s main media, but she also uses markers, pencils and acrylics. She scans the work into Photoshop and uses the application to clean it up and colour correct it before delivering it to her clients.

Martha is very much a gestural painter, with a very fine skill in getting paints to flow from her brush and soak beautifully into the paper, and to mix with one another. Seen up close, it’s a gorgeous effect. Her work is vibrant and vivid as you can see, and full of joy and whimsy.

Laish, James

Seidlitz, Serge

Serge Seidlitz, an English/German hybrid born in Kenya, grew up traveling between the U.K. and Asia, and a steady diet of MTV and Mad Magazine fueled his desire to become an illustrator. He combines elements from popular culture with diverse influences to create work that forms an iconic and graphic language, and explores original ideas through maps, infographics, character design, and other media. Following his studies in graphic design at Camberwell College of Arts, he worked as an in-house designer at Cartoon Network before leaving to focus on illustration. Seidlitz has an ever-evolving list of clients, including The New York Times, The Guardian, NME Magazine, MTV, VH1, Lush Cosmetics, British Airways, Sony Playstation, Vodafone, Orange, Coca-Cola, and Honda. He won an AOI Gold Award in 2006 and his first solo show was mounted in London in 2011.

Adams, Lisa

Born in Vermont, Manhattan based for years -quirky wit and ironic edge inform the illustrations of Lisa Adams. A graduate of the Pratt Institute, Lisa has been making art since she could hold a pencil. This former Tribecan recently relocated to Mystic, CT and now lives on a sheep farm on the ocean. She has painted only 3 sheep so far but she does sail a lot. Using a mix of super-realism, collage, outsider art and hand-lettering, Lisa has garnered a reputation for her map illustrations showcasing her own world of nautical elements and charming unexpected icons. And, she still wears Prada around the farm.

Vitale, Stefano

Stefano Vitale is an internationally acclaimed illustrator and artist. While studying for a degree in Economics at the University of Southern California, he often traveled to Mexico and the Southwest. There he found inspiration in the simplicity of the popular local folk art. This influenced him so much that when he completed his economics degree Vitale continued at The Arts Center in Pasadena, California for a Bachelor of Fine Arts. After studying art and becoming a successful freelance illustrator, Carlo chose to further his education as an architectural student at Politechnic of Milan. He went on to collaborate with the premier Italian designer Bruno Munari and attend both Scuola del Fumet and The Domus Academy in Milan. Since 2002, Carlo has been working with various agencies in Europe and exhibiting artworks in Paris, Tai Pei, Milan and Turin. Today, Carlo's work combines his dual loves of architecture and decorative illustration. This distinctive style continually wins Italian Illustration awards and the work has been selected by The American Illustration Annual and 3x3 in the U.S.

I'm a UK based illustrator, brought up in SW England. I spent 4 years studying illustration at art college in Cornwall, followed by a couple of years working at an commercial illustration studio then 20 plus years living in Oxford as a freelancer. I’ve worked for most major publishers and a fair few small ones, during which time I’ve illustrated countless encyclopedias, reference and text books. Several years back I was commissioned by Oxford University Press to illustrate the maps for a history series, ranging from Ancient Romans to WWII. Since then maps have become my speciality. I am the main map artist for BBC History Magazine, my maps have appeared in atlases, books and as posters worldwide. I currently live and work with my family in Somerset on the edge of a village amongst old cider orchards, green fields and mole hills.

Martin Haake is an internationally known illustrator and artist. After some years living in London, Martin moved back to Berlin where he lives with his wife and his two sons who both want to grow up to be pirates!(the old fashioned kind of course). Hargreaves, Martin

History and humor marry together beautifully in the illustrations of Martin Hargreaves, and his versatile style has seen him creating everything from pastiche images mimicking the great masters to fantastical beasts and still life paintings. You’ll find his work in advertising, children’s books, magazines and newspapers, and even at Hampton Court Palace.

It’s no surprise to learn that Martin’s greatest inspiration comes from classical painters like William Hogarth, Hans Holbein, Rembrandt and Giovanni Battista Piazzetta. In fact, he says that if he could travel back in time he would visit the 18th century, and alongside his love of Renaissance artwork he also loves classical music.

Martin works from a shed in his garden, with large windows through which he can see apple trees and the rolling hills of East Sussex. If he ever gets creative block, he likes to dig in his vegetable garden, or look after his many pets, which include two dogs, three horses, two guinea pigs and seven chickens.

Martin has a BA Illustration from Brighton Polytechnic (now Brighton University).

His approach and the media he uses vary from project to project, but he always begins drawing with a simple pen on paper until he has an idea of what direction the image will take. Martin works in traditional media – oil paints, watercolor, pen and ink – and is also adept at making changes digitally as required. The 2B pencil is his all-time favorite art tool.

Martin’s inspiration comes from the old masters, and the styles he works in follow on from that. In his portfolio you’ll see fine paintings that look just like Rembrandts, and others that are more like 18th century engravings or 19th century book illustrations. In short, he will come up with a style that suits the brief.
