Berkeley, Jon

Jon Berkeley graduated in Fine Art from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin in 1983. Since then he has lived and worked as a freelance illustrator in Dublin, London, Sydney, and Hong Kong. Jon has worked extensively with many top advertising agencies such as Bozell, Saatchi and Saatchi, McCann Erickson, Campbell Grey, DDB Needham, BBDO, and all those other Beeby Deebies. Previous clients include: Time Magazine, The Economist, The New Statesman, The Irish Times, The Sunday Times, The Sunday Tribune, Backbone, Time Out, The Washington Post, Radio Times, The Sydney Morning Herald, The LA Times, Wirtschaftswoche, El Tiempo, Asiaweek, CFO Asia, Credit Lyonnais, American Express, Coca Cola, Digital, Heinz, Carlsberg, Aer Lingus, Guinness, RTE, Penguin Books, Scholastic Books, and just about anyone else you can think of. O'Kif, Alejandro

Alejandro Okif lives in Buenos Aires with his creative family, his wife Monica (illustrator), son Sebastian (musician) and daughter, Simona (illustrator and tattoo artist). As a young boy, his father who worked in advertising introduced him to the arts. As a result, he was totally hooked and started drawing immediately. When he was at Facultad de Humanidades y Artes de Rosario, he was drawn to Egon Schiele, Rembrandt, Goya, and Lautrec. As he started working in publishing, he discovered the talented work of some amazing illustrators such as Andre Francois, Quentin Blake, Ronald Searle, and Tomi Ungerer. Alejandro works with different mediums, from acrylics, watercolors, inks, and Photoshop. When not illustrating, he enjoys watching movies, going to concerts, and playing bass guitar with his son Sebastian(though he claims that he is not a good musician).

Ning, Amy

Born in Tokyo and relocated to the States in 1972. Studied illustration at California State University in Long Beach. Along with her freelance career, she has was selected as a feature illustrator for the Orange County Register Newspaper from 1989 through 2008. Her stylized, decorative and often conceptual art has been recognized in shows of SI, SILA, Print and SND. Her digital illustrations have also been featured in advertising, design firm, and publishing projects, including clients Phizer, Livestrong, Major League Baseball, The Integer Group, Encyclopedia Brittanica, Ths San Diego Union , Clubhouse Jr., Consumer Resports, Houghton Mifflin and many more.

Carter, Abby

Abby has drawn all of her life. When she was eleven, she and her grandmother had a card business: Abby drew, and her grandmother sold. In college she studied art, but also liked science and nutrition, and wished there was a way to combine it all. Several years later, after she was married and had a daughter, she and her husband founded Fresh Samantha, the juice company, which fulfilled that dream. In addition to her graphics for Fresh Samantha, she has illustrated many picture books and chapter books for children. She says that she loves to draw odd characters, and hates to draw straight lines. Abby lives with her husband and two children in Connecticut.

O'Brien, Tim

George, Patrick

Peter Scott's (a.k.a PatrickGeorge) skills of illustration and design are largely concept-driven, clean, punchy and witty. He enjoys working on his own children's books (A drove of bullocks, A filth of starlings, Little Miss Muffet and other rhymes, and Opposites published by PatrickGeorge), but his style works equally well in a corporate and media context. Goudappel, Aad

He translates complex ideas and abstract themes into clear and powerful images. Aad creates illustrations that at first glance seem very simple. His distinctive style is characterized by the use of flat areas of color and the complete absence of lines. Levine, Lucinda

As a graphic recorder, Lucinda works all over the country providing exciting visual support for seminars, ideation sessions, strategic planning, visualizations, workshops, speeches -- any form of creative conversation. Created live, on site, her drawings distill the complex content of the meeting into easily understandable bites that spark participants’ interest, comprehension and awareness and help them stay focused.

Her recording style draws on a large mental image bank formed through years of experience as an illustrator, resulting in recordings that are colorful, intelligent and filled with descriptive metaphor that stimulates and engages participation during the meeting and sharpens attendees’ retention of meeting content afterwards.

With an emphasis on the conceptual and metaphorical, her illustration has appeared in editorial, educational and informational print and web products for diverse clientele including Academy for Educational Development (AED), Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL), Eagle Publishing, Georgetown University Press, President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, National Safe Kids Campaign, The American Red Cross, USDA Design Center, and Wall Street Journal. She also has special expertise in the illustration of global educational and instructional materials in the areas of health, safety and literacy.

She holds Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Arts degrees in illustration from Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts and lives the Washington, DC area. Crowther, Peter

Peter Crowther graduated in 1987 from the London College of Printing with a First Class Honors in Graphic Design. Then went onto the Royal College of Art in 1987-1989 graduating with an MA(DES RCA) in Graphic Design. He then worked for six months in one of the first truly multimedia design companies, Decode Design. During this time he beta tested the first version of Photoshop and went onto leave and set up as a freelance illustrator/animator. The journey from working with photomontage, through to photo-retouching and later with realistic 3D has led to many interesting and varied jobs and has been incredibly rewarding. From stamps for the Royal mail up to 96 sheet posters for P&O and the odd title sequence. Today we continue to use the cutting edge 3D software often speaking directly with the chief programmers to request and test new features. As the technology evolves we strive to create the highest level of work with an eye for the details. Peter Crowther lives in London with his wife Suzanna and two children, Roberta and Jack.

The Red Dress

The Red Dress is a London based Illustration duo, Olivia Chancellor and Ollie Bland. This husband and wife team met while studying Graphic Design and Illustration at Central St. Martins in 1996. The Red Dress' love for all types of Vintage posters (especially B-Movies) and Pulp Fiction illustration has inspired Olivia and Ollie to join creative forces. Drawing upon over 10 years experience in Fashion, T.V/Film, the Art world, Illustration and Design, The Red Dress produce striking, often dark but humorous images by painting Contemporary Culture in a Retro style. Craig phillips has been providing illustrations to the publishing and advertising industries in the United States, Australia and Europe for over a decade. He has created book jackets and interior art for Random House, Penguin, Scholastic, Simon & Schuster, Hachette Book Group, TOR Books, Wizards Of The Coast, Oxford University Press and many more. Madden, Colleen

The fourth girl in a family of 8 children, Colleen Madden made it through childhood pretending to be a space princess with a wookie sidekick and drawing in her cardboard box art studio. Colleen spent some time acting and training at The Second City in Chicago, then went on to graduate from a small liberal arts school in Massachusetts, with a contract major in illustration and English literature. She is currently residing in the Philadelphia area, with her writer-husband, and their 2 sons. She has illustrated for many different kinds of clients and is the recipient of an International Greeting Card Louie Award. When not illustrating, Colleen can be found long distance running, making her boys giggle, and eating lots and lots of sushi.

Paraskevas, Michael

Michael Paraskevas, a well known illustrator among magazine art directors, has had his work featured in such prestigious publications as Sports Illustrated, Time, Town & Country and Esquire and has earned numerous awards from industry professionals. Michael has exhibited at Giraffics Gallery in East Hampton (6 one-man shows) and recently showed at the prestigious Southampton Gallery owned by Peter Marcelle. Along with his mother Betty, he published many children’s books over the past 12 years. Their work includes the much loved Tangerine Bear, which was produced as a Christmas Special for ABC in 2000. Other popular works by the pair include Junior Kroll, A Very Kroll Christmas, Shamlanders, The Ferocious Beast, Cecil Bunions, and Chocolate at the Four Seasons. The mother-and-son team’s most well-known project, called Maggie and the Ferocious Beast, was developed for Nick Jr. and is still running on Noggin. It won the prized Gemini Award for best animated show of 2001 in Canada. Paraskevas was educated at School of Visual Arts in New York where he also received his Master’s Degree in Visual Journalism. He divides his time between his home in SouthHampton and LA.

Holcroft, John

John studied Graphic Design at Sheffield, England. It was in the mid 90s that he succumbed to the lure of illustration. He started out painting in acrylic on canvas and was influenced by David Cutter and Edward Hopper. Always trying to keep his work fresh, John has reinvented his style half a dozen times since. His latest incarnation is a screen print effect created digitally and inspired from old adverts and packaging from the 50s. John likes to experiment with different markets. The versatile nature of his style allows him to explore more avenues. Mainly working in editorial, John’s past clients include: BBC, Reader’s Digest, Financial Times and The Guardian.

Ho, Jannie

Born in Hong Kong and raised in Philadelphia, Jannie moved to New York to study illustration at Parsons School of Design. After working as a graphic designer and an art director at many fun places such as Nickelodeon, Scholastic, and TIME Magazine for Kids, she decided that illustration was her true calling. Jannie (also known as Chicken Girl) now specializes in illustrating for the children’s market, with her work appearing in both trade and educational books, magazines, toys, crafts and digital media. She currently works and plays in Boston, MA with her husband and daughter.

Peter Strain is an AOI (Association of Illustrators) Critics' Choice Award-winning illustrator based in Belfast.

Kachik, John

John Kachik is an alumnus and occasional adjunct faculty at the Maryland Institute College of Art where he studied illustration and sculpture. He has been working as a freelance illustrator and fine artist since graduating with honors in 1984. Some of his favorite jobs include work with Shiner Beers, Mini Cooper and Bloomingdale's. His clients include such magazines as Rolling Stone, Forbes, Sports Illustrated, The Wall Street Journal, Business Week and Texas Monthly as well as publishers like Random House, W.W. Norton & Company, and Simon & Schuster. John's work has been honored by Communication Arts, Graphis, Society of Publication Designers, Society of Illustrators, Print Annual, The Los Angeles Society of Illustrators, American Illustration and the One Show. He also has a permanent collection of ten portraits in exhibition at The Caring Foundation, a Smithsonian associated gallery in Washington DC. Huliska-Beith, Laura

Laura Huliska- Beith is a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute. She grew up in Omaha Nebraska, the oldest of 5 children and her siblings were the inspiration behind her first picture book, The Book of Bad Ideas (although she takes full credit for Bad Idea #143). She has since illustrated many books including Bubble Gum, Bubble Gum by Lisa Wheeler, The Recess Queen and The Worst Best Friend both by Alexis O’Neill. Most recently illustrated books are The Wild, Wild Inside (March 2010) by Kate Feiffer and The Adventures of Granny Clearwater and Little Critter (October 2010) by Kimberly Willis Holt.

Koelsch, Mike

Michael Koelsch (b: 1967) is an illustrator who acknowledges the beliefs of some of the great illustrators of the 50's and 60's, the giants like Coby Whitmore and Austin Briggs, who thought that keeping up with the times and evolving your style is as important as your sense of design and color and the fundamentals of drawing and painting. Mike resides in Huntington Beach, California with his wife, two girls and their Greater Swiss Mountain dog. Living by the beach and having a family he lives in perpetual motion between surfing, club soccer with the girls and actually getting some work done. Somewhere in there there is time for sleep. Newman, Malane

As a life-long illustrator and cartoonist, Malane Newman now mainly focuses on cartoon illustration, freelance cartooning, character design, and licensed character artwork. Contracted licensed character work includes Mattel’s Barbie – A Fashion Fairy Tale and The Toon Studio of Beverly Hills - Fairy Tale High. Her portfolio includes digital illustrations for packaging, advertising, new character development, board games and toys, and children’s books. Bollinger, Peter

Renowned in the field of commercial art, Peter Bollinger is an award winning illustrator whose clients include Grey Advertising, Sony Entertainment, DreamWorks, Sega, Wizards of the Coast, Nintendo, Mars, Harper Collins, Scholastic and many other publishing, advertising, and entertainment organizations. Holding degrees in industrial and environmental design, Peter's expertise covers diverse fields, from the design of computer terminals and street furniture, to monorails and automobiles. Newton, Walter

Walter Newton was born in 1981 in Glasgow. He remained there for the next 21 years, attending the Glasow School of Art before being lured to the bright lights of London and the Royal College of Art. Five years later, Walter lives and works in Birmingham, drawing pictures and sporadically animating for anyone that will let him near them.

Hall, Mike

Crowded urban scenes, architecture and maps – the things you see today in Mike Hall’s artwork go back to his creative beginnings. As a child he used to love drawing images full of people, and maps of imaginary towns and even entire countries. He says this might be because he grew up in the new town of Harlow in Essex – the modern, pre-planned, post-war setting gave him an interest in architecture, topography and mapping from an early age.

Of course, he liked comics and picture books too, and today he’s also inspired by William Hogarth, Gustave Doré and Wenceslaus Hollar, as well as MacDonald Gill, an artist who embellished his map illustrations with all kinds of colourful motifs. He loves everything Hispanic, which is why he recently relocated to Spain.

Mike spent two years studying graphic design before switching to an illustration course. He completed an Illustration degree at the University of Westminster.

Often Mike’s hand-drawn imagery is embellished using a computer. He combines print designs he’s drawn using pen on paper with digital elements to build up an image. The colouring is done digitally. Sometimes, he’ll also draw his map designs using vector graphics.

Architecture usually plays a large role in Mike’s work – either as the primary focus of the illustration, or as something in the background that gives it structure. He’s very interested in topographical views, geography and conveying a sense of place. Nonetheless, his characters come through just as strongly with crowded, colourful people scenes giving you plenty to look at.

Hargreaves, Martin

History and humor marry together beautifully in the illustrations of Martin Hargreaves, and his versatile style has seen him creating everything from pastiche images mimicking the great masters to fantastical beasts and still life paintings. You’ll find his work in advertising, children’s books, magazines and newspapers, and even at Hampton Court Palace.

It’s no surprise to learn that Martin’s greatest inspiration comes from classical painters like William Hogarth, Hans Holbein, Rembrandt and Giovanni Battista Piazzetta. In fact, he says that if he could travel back in time he would visit the 18th century, and alongside his love of Renaissance artwork he also loves classical music.

Martin works from a shed in his garden, with large windows through which he can see apple trees and the rolling hills of East Sussex. If he ever gets creative block, he likes to dig in his vegetable garden, or look after his many pets, which include two dogs, three horses, two guinea pigs and seven chickens.

Martin has a BA Illustration from Brighton Polytechnic (now Brighton University).

His approach and the media he uses vary from project to project, but he always begins drawing with a simple pen on paper until he has an idea of what direction the image will take. Martin works in traditional media – oil paints, watercolor, pen and ink – and is also adept at making changes digitally as required. The 2B pencil is his all-time favorite art tool.

Martin’s inspiration comes from the old masters, and the styles he works in follow on from that. In his portfolio you’ll see fine paintings that look just like Rembrandts, and others that are more like 18th century engravings or 19th century book illustrations. In short, he will come up with a style that suits the brief.

Panczyszyn, Shauna Lynn

Shauna Lynn Panczyszyn is the go-to illustrator for vibrant, hand rendered type and she’s honed her wonderful chalk-board aesthetic down to perfection. Based in Orlando, Florida, her talents go well beyond brilliant lettering. She has a classically trained voice and is also a figure skater. When she’s not in her studio, there’s a good chance she’s at the local rink turning triple axles with her friends.

Her musical tastes change by the season – in the warmer months it’s usually Bon Iver, Death Cab for Cutie and Zero 7, but in autumn or winter she’ll listen to Pat Metheny, George Winston, Gordon Lightfoot, Mannheim Steamroller or Josh Groban. She loves old advertising and packaging, particularly fruit crate labels and art deco lettering.

Shauna went to the University of North Florida, originally to study opera. However she switched to graphic design, took classes in painting and screen printing, and discovered a love of illustration. After graduating she did an internship in an agency in Jacksonville, and worked in graphic design in Orlando before becoming a freelance illustrator.

You’ll never believe this, but Shauna has only ever worked on a chalkboard once. Despite how incredibly chalky her projects look, they are all digitally produced. Having said that, she does begin in her sketchbook working in a pink pencil because it’s pale and allows her to refine the letterforms as she goes over them with a 2B. An image is then scanned into Photoshop and worked on using a Wacom Cintiq.

It’s Shauna’s custom brushes that really make the difference. She’s spent ages creating them and they ensure that her chalk-look work is as realistic as possible.

In terms of colour, her instinct is to go wild. However, as she points out she doesn’t want her work to look like a rainbow has exploded on it, so she usually cuts her palette back to four bright colours.

Many have called Shauna’s work whimsical. While there’s certainly fluidity and freedom about it she’ll also fill background areas with fine detail. Little words squeezed in here and there allow the client the opportunity to augment and refine a message – or just get more in there! But the secret to Shauna’s style is her desire to please her inner five-year-old. Happy and positive is what she does best and if her work isn’t those things she won’t be satisfied with it.

Ward, Mark

Mark Ward is an artist based in London. His work is derived from his obsession with Americana. Raised on a diet of Saturday morning cartoons, BMX, skateboarding, and drawing, Mark has kept true to his roots soaking up every last candy wrapper and morphing them into his surreal and comical visions. Growing up in the South London suburbs in the late 80’s, Mark was reading every possible American skateboard magazine he could get his hands on. He realized his grey London environment didn’t reflect the sunny California he was being sold in the magazines. Rolling through puddles in South London just doesn’t match up to cruising along Long Beach. Mark’s work mixes the everyday mundane with surreal elements of the 80’s American bubble, encouraging the viewer to see things differently, and peel back the gloss on the pop imagery that he worshipped in his childhood. A graduate of Central St Martins, Mark has been recognized by the Art Directors Club and received a Young Gun Award for his outstanding illustration work. He has exhibited internationally throughout Europe and America, in both solo and group shows. His work was also included in the Pop Art Design show at the Barbican. Alongside his personal work, Mark creates bold imagery for a wide range of commercial opportunities including fashion, magazine covers, editorial and large scale installations. Projects include signature work for Stussy, Burton Snowboards, Nike and Columbia Records. Rathke, Kathryn

Looking at one of Kathryn Rathke’s line-based illustrations can be a bit like working out a puzzle – was it created using one fluid and continuous line, or many? According to the Seattle-based artist she owes her drawing skills to family connections. Her grandmother taught her to draw and supplied her with books by Arthur Rackham, Maurice Sendak, and William Steig, while her father was president of an advertising agency and used to bring home reams of paper for her to practice on.

She has lots of other creative interests too. She learned to make leather masks in Italy, enjoys German experimental theatre, and sometimes throws parties where her friends must act out vignettes found in a 1912 children’s book called Entertainments for All the Year.

Kathryn did an MFA in Set Design at the University of Wisconsin but was always drawing on the side, sometimes accepting commissions from newspapers and magazines. Eventually she flipped things around and made her illustration work a full-time profession and set design became her hobby.

Kathryn does everything digitally in Photoshop and Illustrator using a Cintiq screen by Wacom.

If she’s doing portraiture work, she draws her subject many times over from different angles. This way she learns about the most important features of their face and can draw it in a way that makes it instantly recognisable.

The line is core to Kathryn’s style and her work is very fluid. Expressive and calligraphic, there’s a unique sense of gesture in her illustrations. She also uses crosshatching to develop surfaces in her images, using layers of lines of varying thickness to build up a texture.

Watkinson, Mark

Born in Gloucestershire and growing up in Lincolnshire, Mark originally wanted to be a mechanic. However, one of his teachers suggested he pursue a career in art and he’s been a successful freelance illustrator since the early 80s. He plays percussion in a band called the B1200s, collects old cars and enjoys a game of tennis. His early influences include Gavin McLeod and Philip Castle.

Mark earned a diploma and then a higher diploma in Graphic Design from the Lincoln College of Art.

Keep it clean, clear and simple is Mark’s mantra. He works in Freehand, Illustrator and Photoshop, as well as using traditional media.

Mark’s style is very graphic with strong line work, and usually employs flat colours. His work is ideal for ‘how to’ images and infographics, with isometric viewpoints and, sometimes, a blueprint feel. He enjoys tackling technical challenges, but also produces more playful and conceptual work.

Hi I’m Mike,

I’m an illustrator based in the lovely city of Bristol, UK. Since graduating from Falmouth University with a BA (HONS) in Illustration, I’ve worked for a variety of clients where I’ve produced illustrations for editorial, advertising and book covers.

My work is digital using lines and colour in a textured and painterly way in keeping with my traditional roots. I’m strongly inspired by 50s illustration and comic book art. I specialise in portraiture and figure work and like to produce humorous solutions for my illustrations depending on the brief.

Other than Illustrating I also attend live painting events and sign write.
