Funderburgh, Dan

Dan Funderburgh is a Brooklyn-based illustrator, artist, and wallpaper designer whose creations are rooted in the world of decorative arts. Dan was born in Seattle and reared in the Midwest, receiving a BFA from the University of Kansas with a focus in illustration. After moving to New York in 2001, Dan established a partnership with the now Brooklyn-based wallpaper studio Flavorpaper, where his designs are hand-screen printed. The wallpapers have been featured at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair and at Pulse Miami, and are a part of the Cooper-Hewitt's permanent collection. Occasional collaborations with companies like Brooks, Furni, and Gravis have allowed the work to live on bicycle seats, furniture, and luggage. Dan's personal and gallery work includes letterpress and screen prints, sculptures and installations that play off of historical ornamentation. Revealing an acute appreciation for both the baroque and utilitarian, Dan's work often combines the language of ornament with objects that surround us. de Giorgi, Sergio

Sergio was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he currently lives with his wife Viviana and two daughters, April and Emma. As a young child, he was obsessed with a TV series about superheroes. Sergio was so into it that he even dressed up in his superhero costume to explore his neighborhood, jumped over rooftops, and went home to write and draw about his superhero adventures. He has never stopped drawing. In 1989, he graduated from La Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes Prilidiano Pueyrredon with a degree in fine arts. Initially, he worked as an industrial designer, scenographer, and an art director for an advertising/TV firm while simultaneously developing his own short stories. When his first daughter was born in 2000, he started writing and illustrating for children. In his free time, Sergio enjoys designing and manufacturing wooden and paper toys.

Rathke, Kathryn

Looking at one of Kathryn Rathke’s line-based illustrations can be a bit like working out a puzzle – was it created using one fluid and continuous line, or many? According to the Seattle-based artist she owes her drawing skills to family connections. Her grandmother taught her to draw and supplied her with books by Arthur Rackham, Maurice Sendak, and William Steig, while her father was president of an advertising agency and used to bring home reams of paper for her to practice on.

She has lots of other creative interests too. She learned to make leather masks in Italy, enjoys German experimental theatre, and sometimes throws parties where her friends must act out vignettes found in a 1912 children’s book called Entertainments for All the Year.

Kathryn did an MFA in Set Design at the University of Wisconsin but was always drawing on the side, sometimes accepting commissions from newspapers and magazines. Eventually she flipped things around and made her illustration work a full-time profession and set design became her hobby.

Kathryn does everything digitally in Photoshop and Illustrator using a Cintiq screen by Wacom.

If she’s doing portraiture work, she draws her subject many times over from different angles. This way she learns about the most important features of their face and can draw it in a way that makes it instantly recognisable.

The line is core to Kathryn’s style and her work is very fluid. Expressive and calligraphic, there’s a unique sense of gesture in her illustrations. She also uses crosshatching to develop surfaces in her images, using layers of lines of varying thickness to build up a texture.

Koelsch, Mike

Michael Koelsch (b: 1967) is an illustrator who acknowledges the beliefs of some of the great illustrators of the 50's and 60's, the giants like Coby Whitmore and Austin Briggs, who thought that keeping up with the times and evolving your style is as important as your sense of design and color and the fundamentals of drawing and painting. Mike resides in Huntington Beach, California with his wife, two girls and their Greater Swiss Mountain dog. Living by the beach and having a family he lives in perpetual motion between surfing, club soccer with the girls and actually getting some work done. Somewhere in there there is time for sleep. Moreno, Gabriel

Illustrator, engraver and painter based in Madrid, graduated in Fine Art from the University of Sevilla in 1998. Since then he has worked in different design studios and advertising agencies in Andalusia. In 2004 he moved to Madrid and in 2007 began showing his portfolio. He was named among the top 20 new illustrators by Computer Arts magazine in 2007. Previous clients include: TBWA, Y&R, BBDO, Leo Burnet, Orion Books, Jim Beam, Snickers, Marlboro, Universal Music, Time Out, Rolling Stone magazine, The Sunday Times and Esquire.

Prades, Simon

Simon Prades, born in 1985 into a german/spanish family is living in Saarbrücken, Germany with his wife and son.Since finishing University with a diploma in Graphic Design, he has been working as a freelance illustrator for clients in Editorial, Publishing, Sports, Advertising and Film.

Simon works in analog techniques, such as ink, pencils or watercolor but also digitally, depending on the subject. His work is often a combination of detailed and complex drawings and narrative ideas. Depending on the subject his illustrations can also be rough, spontaneous and moody. He also creates slightly animated versions of his illustrations, which can be used in digital publishing and media.

Wilson, Joe

Leicester-born Joe Wilson studied at Leeds Metropolitan University, Graduating with a bachelor of arts degree in Graphic Arts and Design in 2007. After a lifetime of drawing and doodling Joe Wilson became serious about being an artist at an early age and has left himself 'no other option'. Joe Wilson took an interest in printmaking at university and studied this heavily in his final year, with a great deal of his work taking the form of screen prints and etchings. This forms the foundation of Joe Wilson's work today, although since finishing university and leaving the print facilities, other ways of creating similar effects have had to be employed. Joe Wilson's work consists of painstakingly detailed, hand-drawn illustrations, usually in fine-line pen or pencil, that are then scanned and edited on the mac. Joe Wilson takes his influence from an array of sources including old engravings, 70s Vinyl covers and surrealist art. Joe Wilson is particularly interested in ideas of evolution, space, and complex constructions. Joe Wilson's unique drawing style attracts a mixture of different clients from editorial to fashion, he has produced work for clients such as: The Guardian, Adidas, 21st Amendment, Mojo magazine, Prospect Magazine, RKCR/Y&R, The Yards, Peter Werth, The Big Chill Festival, and Topshop. With aspirations to establish himself firmly as an illustrator, he hopes to work on many more commercial projects whilst continuing to produce his personal 'thought experiments' for his own pleasure.

The Red Dress

The Red Dress is a London based Illustration duo, Olivia Chancellor and Ollie Bland. This husband and wife team met while studying Graphic Design and Illustration at Central St. Martins in 1996. The Red Dress' love for all types of Vintage posters (especially B-Movies) and Pulp Fiction illustration has inspired Olivia and Ollie to join creative forces. Drawing upon over 10 years experience in Fashion, T.V/Film, the Art world, Illustration and Design, The Red Dress produce striking, often dark but humorous images by painting Contemporary Culture in a Retro style. Garofoli, Viviana

Viviana Garofoli was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she currently lives with her husband, Sergio and two daughters, April and Emma. As a child, her favorite pastime was playing with her watercolors and crayons on big sheets of paper; if asked what she'd want to be when she grows up, Viviana would immediately reply, "a painter". In 1995, she graduated from Escuela National de Bellas Artes Pridiliano Pueyrredon with a degree in fine arts. Initially, she devoted her full attention to fine arts and successfully exhibited at numerous galleries in Buenos Aires. Subsequently, Viviana started illustrating for the editorial and textbook market and also engaged in restoration of pictorial works. But, it was not until 1995 that she decided to dedicate all her time to illustrating children's books. Over the last 15 years, she has illustrated over 20 children's book and contributed many editorial and textbook illustrations in Argentina and Puerto Rico. In her spare time, Viviana enjoys working in her garden, tending to her orchids.

Lyon, Tammie

Tammie initially pursued a career as a professional ballet dancer before she decided to switch gears. She attended the Columbus College of Art and Design, where she received her BFA. She began her illustration career as a staff illustrator for a major greeting card company eventually becoming the director of the juvenile product line. Having discovered that illustration was her true passion, she left to begin a freelance career in the children's market where she has illustrated numerous books, posters, magazines, cds, games, clothing, and just about anything else you can think of.

After graduating from the RCA with an MA in design products, Chris Labrooy first began to use 3D as a simple tool to visualise ideas for furniture and products that he could not afford to produce. George, Patrick

Peter Scott's (a.k.a PatrickGeorge) skills of illustration and design are largely concept-driven, clean, punchy and witty. Friel, Helen

Since graduating in 2009 from Central Saint Martins, with a first class degree in Graphic Design, Helen Friel has been working as a freelance Paper Engineer. Helen both hand cuts and uses technology to produce her pieces. Bridging the gap between two and three dimensions is central to her design practice as well as producing pieces that involve and evoke emotion in the audience. Griffo, Daniel

Daniel Griffo was born on March 8th, 1973 in La Plata, Argentina, where he currently resides with his wife Elba, his baby boy Benjamin and his two pets Indiana and Jones. As a young child, he was always drawn towards creating and drawing images. At 10, he took his first steps into the world of illustration with the guidance of his drawing and painting instructor who taught him the basic foundations of the craft. In his teens, he became a self-taught comic illustrator and worked for both Argentinean and Italian publishers. Shortly afterwards, he worked for various studios creating licensed art, where he sharpened his skills and amassed a great deal of experience. As a freelance illustrator, Daniel has worked for many large companies including Image Comics, Warner, DC, and Disney. Baker, Andrew

Andrew Baker is a successful practicing illustrator, with a strong reputation in editorial illustration and poster design. He won a Gold Award for Editorial illustrator from the Association of Illustrators in 2003, and his work has been featured in the Design, New Media and Editorial sections of the AOI Images Annual and in the D&AD annual. His work is seen in most serious newspapers and magazines, from The Guardian to New Scientist, and in on-line environments, shop windows and on posters and book covers. He is primarily concerned with using images for storytelling or conveying messages. Drawing, colour, a love for ephemera and an eye for retro design inform his work. Projects are started with drawing and completed using illustrator and Photoshop in a distinctive way. Much of his work is designed to be seen in sequential form, for example sequences of images for The Economist or the BBC web-site, but he remains passionate about the power of the single key image. Andrew Baker is a graduate of the Royal College of Art and teaches part-time on the illustration course at Middlesex University. Herring, Matthew

Matt uses a montage of found & self-generated graphic material to create assured, vibrant images for the Publishing, Design & Advertising industries. These images are selected from recent projects. Newman, Malane

As a life-long illustrator and cartoonist, Malane Newman now mainly focuses on cartoon illustration, freelance cartooning, character design, and licensed character artwork. Contracted licensed character work includes Mattel’s Barbie – A Fashion Fairy Tale and The Toon Studio of Beverly Hills - Fairy Tale High. Her portfolio includes digital illustrations for packaging, advertising, new character development, board games and toys, and children’s books. Malane Newman has worked quite extensively with clients designing original cartoon characters and illustrating their new products. Malane Newman’s work also appears in a number of periodicals that include greeting cards, children’s books, magazines, newspapers and many others. Simard, Rémy

Originally a student of political science, French-Canadian artist Rémy Simard began his career as an illustrator in 1980. Working from Montreal, he creates computer-generated illustration for a large variety of clients including Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Federal Express, General Motors, Citibank, Fidelity Communications, Better Homes & Gardens, Book-of-the-Month Club, McGraw-Hill and Scott Foresman, in the U.S.; and Chrysler, Nissan, Banque Nationale de Paris, Cantel, Ville de Montreal and YTV in Canada. He has also written and illustrated several children's' books, including Monsieur Noir et Blanc, a finalist for Canada's Governor's Prize. To relax after all this work, he likes to race around on his motocyclette!

Hall, Mike

Crowded urban scenes, architecture and maps – the things you see today in Mike Hall’s artwork go back to his creative beginnings. As a child he used to love drawing images full of people, and maps of imaginary towns and even entire countries. He says this might be because he grew up in the new town of Harlow in Essex – the modern, pre-planned, post-war setting gave him an interest in architecture, topography and mapping from an early age.

Of course, he liked comics and picture books too, and today he’s also inspired by William Hogarth, Gustave Doré and Wenceslaus Hollar, as well as MacDonald Gill, an artist who embellished his map illustrations with all kinds of colourful motifs. He loves everything Hispanic, which is why he recently relocated to Spain.

Mike spent two years studying graphic design before switching to an illustration course. He completed an Illustration degree at the University of Westminster.

Often Mike’s hand-drawn imagery is embellished using a computer. He combines print designs he’s drawn using pen on paper with digital elements to build up an image. The colouring is done digitally. Sometimes, he’ll also draw his map designs using vector graphics.

Architecture usually plays a large role in Mike’s work – either as the primary focus of the illustration, or as something in the background that gives it structure. He’s very interested in topographical views, geography and conveying a sense of place. Nonetheless, his characters come through just as strongly with crowded, colourful people scenes giving you plenty to look at.

Taylor, James

Born in 1977 to an Italian mother and English father James Taylors relationship with pencil and paper started at an early age. James Taylors work is eclectic, with a range of influences from Keiichi Tanaami to Tony Hart. “Eclectic” but always considered. From collage to pure drawing, James Taylors approach and thinking have won him varying clients in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Hanson, Sarah

Sarah's work is combination of traditional handmade and digital collage. Inspired by her travels and an avid collector of random ephemera, she finds and stores interesting bits of old paper, maps, photographs and various objects, which have all become strong elements in her work. Morgan, Patrick

Patrick started his career as a freelance designer after gaining a Degree in Graphics and Illustration with Commendations for Print Making at Kingston University (London) in 1998. Patrick has done high profile work for global clients including: Transport of London, Cingular, Starbucks, Bacardi, Smirnoff, Coca-Cola and Waitrose, which has resulted in him having to work in Japan, Spain, Italy and the USA as well as London, and having his work appear in many more countries across USA, Europe and Asia. This work and exposure has resulted in Patrick's work being has been short-listed for and receiving commendations for a number of awards, including the Marketing Week Design Award for Corporate Design and Illustration, and the Design and Art Direction Award for Corporate Design and Illustration. (Most notably as a result of his work on the Selfridges Annual Report 2003.) He is also regularly featured in Creative review and the UK design press. On top of all of this Patrick has for the last 2 years been a university tutor, passing his skills onto the next generation of up and coming illustration graduates at the Istituto Marangoni – the prestigious Milan founded Fashion University. Patrick's most recent assignments find him as a spokesman for Hewlett Packard Arts Council and consultant for HP on the development of the HP 130 Large Format.

Tejido, Jomike

Jomike Tejido is an architect and award-winning illustrator and author who has made over 50 children’s books in his hometown in Manila. Some of which are Tagu-Taguan (Hide and Seek) (1st National Children’s book awards, Best Reads 2010), The Amazing Hat, and the Foldabots Toy Books. He has also worked with Oxford University Press, McGraw-Hill, and most recently, Scholastic. Jomike enjoys art inspired by nature and is reflective in his other venture as a painter on hand-woven mats. Apart from art, Jomike enjoys playing soccer, eating seafood, cooking and traveling to new places. Jomike lives in Manila, Philippines with his wife and baby daughter, Sophia.

Carter, Abby

Abby has drawn all of her life. When she was eleven, she and her grandmother had a card business: Abby drew, and her grandmother sold. In college she studied art, but also liked science and nutrition, and wished there was a way to combine it all. Several years later, after she was married and had a daughter, she and her husband founded Fresh Samantha, the juice company, which fulfilled that dream. In addition to her graphics for Fresh Samantha, she has illustrated many picture books and chapter books for children. She says that she loves to draw odd characters, and hates to draw straight lines. Abby lives with her husband and two children in Connecticut.

Tracie Ching is an illustrator and graphic designer living and working in Washington, DC. A self-taught digital artist, Tracie specializes in portraiture featuring complex, graphic line work with a limited palette - a tendency-turned-style after years of working in the medium of silkscreen prints.

Elmer, Richard

Richard Elmer is from New Jersey. He studied graphic design briefly in South Florida. He returned north to study design and illustration, receiving his BFA from School of Visual Arts in NYC where he currently lives and works. Continued studies include Parsons School of Design and the New School in New York. Early professional years were spent in publishing, quickly moving on as a freelance artist creating illustrations for many advertising, publishing and design companies such as New York Times and Strathmore with work reproduced in Germany and Spain. Working professionally first in pastels, medium went on to include oils and traditional acrylic as well as digital. A strong visual vocabulary helped define his conceptual style across publishing, advertising, design and editorial markets. Richard Elmer teaches illustration at FIT, School of Art & Design in NYC.

Ward, Mark

Mark Ward is an artist based in London. His work is derived from his obsession with Americana. Raised on a diet of Saturday morning cartoons, BMX, skateboarding, and drawing, Mark has kept true to his roots soaking up every last candy wrapper and morphing them into his surreal and comical visions. Growing up in the South London suburbs in the late 80’s, Mark was reading every possible American skateboard magazine he could get his hands on. He realized his grey London environment didn’t reflect the sunny California he was being sold in the magazines. Rolling through puddles in South London just doesn’t match up to cruising along Long Beach. Mark’s work mixes the everyday mundane with surreal elements of the 80’s American bubble, encouraging the viewer to see things differently, and peel back the gloss on the pop imagery that he worshipped in his childhood. A graduate of Central St Martins, Mark has been recognized by the Art Directors Club and received a Young Gun Award for his outstanding illustration work. He has exhibited internationally throughout Europe and America, in both solo and group shows. His work was also included in the Pop Art Design show at the Barbican. Goudappel, Aad

He translates complex ideas and abstract themes into clear and powerful images. Aad creates illustrations that at first glance seem very simple. His distinctive style is characterized by the use of flat areas of color and the complete absence of lines. On closer look the mildly alienating images often contain multiple intellectual or emotional layers. This approach leads to works that are both timeless and contemporary.

James Carey studied at the London College of Printing, graduating in 2002 with a degree in Graphic Media Design. James Carey's image making combines traditional draughtsmanship with a modern, graphic approach. James works first by hand, and then digitally finesses the separate layers of found imagery, sketched portraiture, and photographic elements, to build intricate narratives and instant visions. Francis, Peter

Based in Brighton, UK, Peter has created fresh, bright artwork for over 15 years. Being heavily influenced by a love of animation he spent a number of years working as an illustrator in children's television. His clients included 'Aardman Animations', BBC Worldwide and 'A' for Animation. Here he was greatly influenced by the art of narrative, and combined his love of drawing with the power of storytelling. His artwork is playful with an eye for color and detail, whilst evoking a subtle theatricality. When not frantically sketching in his studio he takes time for long coastal walks, exploring local history and archaeology, painting seascapes and growing vegetables.

Chivers, Sam

For several years I lead a double life. During the day I worked for a Design/Illustration studio producing work in a wide variety of styles for many different clients. Whilst in my spare time I was exploring more creative preoccupations though self-directed projects, often just enjoying a bit of creative freedom away from the pressures of the commercial world and being told what to do all the time.

Bringing together my love of drawing and geeking out on the computer, these quite often ended up as screen prints. Screen print is a process I’ve grown to love because of the restraints it imposes, I loved trying to create a sense of depth with just three or four layers. Often mistakes would be surprisingly pleasing.

After a while of incubation this work began attracting commercial clients (as I hoped it would) and eventually I made the leap to doing it full time.

My work naturally veers towards that blurry border point between science and nature. Recently I’ve become aware of how much I’m influenced by the countryside in which I live, and my tendency to fictionalise it through drawing.

My ambitions with my work are to keep making it better and continue to evolve as an artist. Presently my output mutated into a two pronged beast; I make these airbrushed sci-fi landscapes and then more hand drawn limited palette pieces – my aim is to carry on joining the dots in between these two styles somehow unifying them more.

Mahoney, David

David Mahoney is a British freelance illustrator based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Since 2010 David has worked with a wide range of Fortune 500 companies and now works under the alias 'Headless Horse'.

His latest client list includes: The Guardian, 20th Century Fox, OPI, Kiehl’s, GQ, Fortune, Maxim, Easyjet, Tesco, Men’s Health, The Economist, NBA, MLB, Institutional Investor, Disney Pixar and Adobe.

David believes keeping tradition alive is important in an increasingly digital age. He specialises in the merging of traditional mediums and digital applications resulted in his signature style coined "tradigital". This method of creating his illustration allows his work to be animated, a style often used in digital editorial magazines.

In 2014, David opened his first solo exhibition at the Coningsby Gallery, London titled ‘Black + White’: a series of animated portraits of twenty leading individuals created in squid ink and watercolour.

In 2013, David was awarded the 99U Scholarship by the Samsung Accelerator and 99U for his illustrative work. David has had his work displayed in numerous publications and has spoken at events in both the USA and UK. David is a Community Professional for Adobe.

At the present, the artist is currently exhibiting his work in LA and New York with the Hero Complex Gallery for his client 20th Century Fox, celebrating the latest American Horror Story and Disney Pixar’s Toy Story.
