Rathke, Kathryn

Looking at one of Kathryn Rathke’s line-based illustrations can be a bit like working out a puzzle – was it created using one fluid and continuous line, or many? According to the Seattle-based artist she owes her drawing skills to family connections. Her grandmother taught her to draw and supplied her with books by Arthur Rackham, Maurice Sendak, and William Steig, while her father was president of an advertising agency and used to bring home reams of paper for her to practice on.

She has lots of other creative interests too. She learned to make leather masks in Italy, enjoys German experimental theatre, and sometimes throws parties where her friends must act out vignettes found in a 1912 children’s book called Entertainments for All the Year.

Kathryn did an MFA in Set Design at the University of Wisconsin but was always drawing on the side, sometimes accepting commissions from newspapers and magazines. Eventually she flipped things around and made her illustration work a full-time profession and set design became her hobby.

Kathryn does everything digitally in Photoshop and Illustrator using a Cintiq screen by Wacom.

If she’s doing portraiture work, she draws her subject many times over from different angles. This way she learns about the most important features of their face and can draw it in a way that makes it instantly recognisable.

The line is core to Kathryn’s style and her work is very fluid. Expressive and calligraphic, there’s a unique sense of gesture in her illustrations. She also uses crosshatching to develop surfaces in her images, using layers of lines of varying thickness to build up a texture.

Moreno, Gabriel

Illustrator, engraver and painter based in Madrid, graduated in Fine Art from the University of Sevilla in 1998. Since then he has worked in different design studios and advertising agencies in Andalusia. In 2004 he moved to Madrid and in 2007 began showing his portfolio. He was named among the top 20 new illustrators by Computer Arts magazine in 2007. Prades, Simon

Simon Prades, born in 1985 into a german/spanish family is living in Saarbrücken, Germany with his wife and son.Since finishing University with a diploma in Graphic Design, he has been working as a freelance illustrator for clients in Editorial, Publishing, Sports, Advertising and Film.

Simon works in analog techniques, such as ink, pencils or watercolor but also digitally, depending on the subject. His work is often a combination of detailed and complex drawings and narrative ideas. Depending on the subject his illustrations can also be rough, spontaneous and moody. He also creates slightly animated versions of his illustrations, which can be used in digital publishing and media.

Wilson, Joe

Leicester-born Joe Wilson studied at Leeds Metropolitan University, Graduating with a bachelor of arts degree in Graphic Arts and Design in 2007. After a lifetime of drawing and doodling Joe Wilson became serious about being an artist at an early age and has left himself 'no other option'. Joe Wilson took an interest in printmaking at university and studied this heavily in his final year, with a great deal of his work taking the form of screen prints and etchings. This forms the foundation of Joe Wilson's work today, although since finishing university and leaving the print facilities, other ways of creating similar effects have had to be employed. Joe Wilson's work consists of painstakingly detailed, hand-drawn illustrations, usually in fine-line pen or pencil, that are then scanned and edited on the mac. Joe Wilson takes his influence from an array of sources including old engravings, 70s Vinyl covers and surrealist art. Joe Wilson is particularly interested in ideas of evolution, space, and complex constructions. Joe Wilson's unique drawing style attracts a mixture of different clients from editorial to fashion, he has produced work for clients such as: The Guardian, Adidas, 21st Amendment, Mojo magazine, Prospect Magazine, RKCR/Y&R, The Yards, Peter Werth, The Big Chill Festival, and Topshop. Roe, Monika

After graduating with a degree in graphic design, Monika Roe worked as an art director and creative director for ad agencies in Los Angeles and Indianapolis. Now a full-time illustrator, some of Monika's clients include: Microsoft, Toyota, Mattel, Diet Coke, Pantene, Coty, Conde Nast Publications, Penguin Group, Doubleday, Random House, Harper Collins, Simon & Schuster, Time Inc., The Wall Street Journal, and Hallmark. Archer, Andrew

Andrew Archer has been an illustrator since 2006 and has worked with an enviable list of the worlds most recognizable brands and publications. Inspired by surrealism, wood block prints, edo period art, ideograms and his time spent in Asia, his work is a self asserting mix of hallucinogenic color and rhythmic line. Best suited to briefs that allow him to indulge his imagination and unique color palette, clients who offer some creative freedom are gifted with extraordinary and distinctive visuals that always gain attention. Hall, Mike

Crowded urban scenes, architecture and maps – the things you see today in Mike Hall’s artwork go back to his creative beginnings. As a child he used to love drawing images full of people, and maps of imaginary towns and even entire countries. He says this might be because he grew up in the new town of Harlow in Essex – the modern, pre-planned, post-war setting gave him an interest in architecture, topography and mapping from an early age.

Of course, he liked comics and picture books too, and today he’s also inspired by William Hogarth, Gustave Doré and Wenceslaus Hollar, as well as MacDonald Gill, an artist who embellished his map illustrations with all kinds of colourful motifs. He loves everything Hispanic, which is why he recently relocated to Spain.

Mike spent two years studying graphic design before switching to an illustration course. He completed an Illustration degree at the University of Westminster.

Often Mike’s hand-drawn imagery is embellished using a computer. He combines print designs he’s drawn using pen on paper with digital elements to build up an image. The colouring is done digitally. Sometimes, he’ll also draw his map designs using vector graphics.

Architecture usually plays a large role in Mike’s work – either as the primary focus of the illustration, or as something in the background that gives it structure. He’s very interested in topographical views, geography and conveying a sense of place. Nonetheless, his characters come through just as strongly with crowded, colourful people scenes giving you plenty to look at.

Morgan, Patrick

Patrick started his career as a freelance designer after gaining a Degree in Graphics and Illustration with Commendations for Print Making at Kingston University (London) in 1998. Patrick has done high profile work for global clients including: Transport of London, Cingular, Starbucks, Bacardi, Smirnoff, Coca-Cola and Waitrose, which has resulted in him having to work in Japan, Spain, Italy and the USA as well as London, and having his work appear in many more countries across USA, Europe and Asia. This work and exposure has resulted in Patrick's work being has been short-listed for and receiving commendations for a number of awards, including the Marketing Week Design Award for Corporate Design and Illustration, and the Design and Art Direction Award for Corporate Design and Illustration. On top of all of this Patrick has for the last 2 years been a university tutor, passing his skills onto the next generation of up and coming illustration graduates at the Istituto Marangoni – the prestigious Milan founded Fashion University. Patrick's most recent assignments find him as a spokesman for Hewlett Packard Arts Council and consultant for HP on the development of the HP 130 Large Format.

Norm Bendell's witty style has been featured in some of the most successful campaigns in the history of advertising. Mahoney, David

David Mahoney is a British freelance illustrator based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Since 2010 David has worked with a wide range of Fortune 500 companies and now works under the alias 'Headless Horse'.

His latest client list includes: The Guardian, 20th Century Fox, OPI, Kiehl’s, GQ, Fortune, Maxim, Easyjet, Tesco, Men’s Health, The Economist, NBA, MLB, Institutional Investor, Disney Pixar and Adobe.

David believes keeping tradition alive is important in an increasingly digital age. He specialises in the merging of traditional mediums and digital applications resulted in his signature style coined "tradigital". John S. Dykes lives and works in the Boston area. John works in acrylic, pen and ink, mixed media, and digital. Berry Rhys, Alan

Alan Berry Rhys is a graphic artist and illustrator home based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He has been a graphic design professor at Buenos Aires University for 8 years. As an artist, I have produced several solo shows at Buenos Aires (Argentina), Rosario (Argentina), San Francisco (CA, USA) and Santiago de Chile (Chile). Gibbon, Rebecca

Illustrator, Rebecca Gibbon was born in Wales in 1968. The youngest of four children she was fed on a diet of picture books by Edward Ardizzone, Roger Duvoisin & Richard Scarry; she dreamed of being an illustrator. Her favorite book was "Frances Face-Maker" by Tome Ungerer.

Her ambition was realized after gaining a first class Honors degree from John Moors University and consequently a Masters at Royal College of Art, London. While at the RCA she was spotted at a children’s book expo in Paris by a French Agent. Since graduating she has worked all over the globe and is represented in New York by Riley Illustration

Rebecca paints in watercolor ink & cultured pencil, and bases her characters on the people she has met and seen over the years. She used to paint on newsprint until one day she looked back at some old work and it had all faded. Lesson learned she now works on acid free cartridge paper.

She lives with her husband and two boys in what was once the Old Village Stores surrounded by their eclectic collections of vintage children’s books, balloon pumps & 1950's ceramics. She loves junk shops, flea markets, drinking tea & of course drawing.

Salerno, Steven

NYC based illustrator Steven Salerno creates stylized illustrations ranging from graphically simple and whimsical, to more realistic, richly textured imagery with some also having a retro feel. And all are anchored in traditional drawing skills reflective of his admiration for select artists and illustrators from past eras.

Over his long independent graphics career Steven has created thousands of published illustrations for nearly 600 clients, for use in print & web advertising, editorial magazines and newspapers, product packaging, corporate publications, retail graphics, and publishing.

To date Steven has also illustrated 30 popular picture books for children, with 5 of these titles as both author and illustrator. His most recent author/illustrator picture book title is "Tim's Goodbye," published by Farrar Straus Giroux 2018, the gentle story of Margot and friends gathering to give their heartfelt impromptu goodbye to a beloved pet that has died.

Steven had 2 new picture books released in 2019: "The Crayon Man", (non-fiction) published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt -written by Natascha Biebow & illustrated by Steven Salerno, the true story of Edwin Binney, inventor of Crayola Crayons. And, "Wild Horse Annie -Friend of Mustangs," (non-fiction) published by Farrar Straus Giroux -written by Tracey Fern & illustrated by Steven Salerno, the true story of Velma Bronn Johnston, horse lover and activist who helped create Federal laws protecting wild horses on public lands.

Some of Steven's picture books have been translated into Chinese, German, Korean, Japanese, Arabic, and Spanish. His picture books have received industry starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, School Library Journal, Children's Literature, The New York Times Review of Books, and have been displayed by the Society of Illustrators (NYC) in their annual children's picture book art exhibition, The Original Art. Glass, Randy

Originally from Kansas City, Randy became the youngest illustrator Hallmark Cards had ever hired — while still a junior in high school. He attended Ringling School of Art and Art Center College of Design, supplementing his tuition by drawing five-minute portraits of people at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World ... a surprisingly valuable education in discipline and patience. Randy began freelancing as an illustrator in the mid-’80s, quickly establishing a strong reputation for highly detailed representational drawing and painting. Although adept at working in color, he gravitated toward and has always preferred a simple black and white palette. He is a master of the graphic technique known as “stipple” — the process of marking a surface with numerous small dots to create an image. It’s a style favored by print media, where paper quality can adversely affect the reproduction of an image, and by its very nature, it’s ideal for Web usage. Perhaps best known commercially as a portrait artist, Randy has an exceptional aptitude for capturing his subject’s character and essence with carefully nuanced precision. This, combined with his stippling expertise, made him a perfect match for the Wall Street Journal’s iconic portraits known as “hedcuts”; he’s created several hundred of them since 1998. Over the years, Randy has received recognition by The Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, Communication Arts, The Art Director’s Club, and Illustration West. Sprouls, Kevin

Kevin Sprouls introduced the hallmark portrait style to the Wall Street Journal in 1979. Between 1979 and 1987, Kevin worked on staff for the paper, creating illustrations and training artists in the style. At the time of his departure from the daily activity of putting out the paper, he was Assistant Art Director in charge of the in-house artists, which numbered 4-5 staff artists, and 2-3 part-timers.

He has been quite active in the freelance illustration sphere since then, contributing to advertising, publishing, editorial and corporate projects. His style is notable for its high level of detail and traditional, engraving like effect.

Sprouls’ work has been featured in the Smithsonian magazine, a web exhibit of the National Portrait Gallery, and a major exhibit celebrating Columbus Day which was mounted in Grand Central Terminal, New York in 2005. He is currently the principal portrait artist for Worth Magazine. He was the portraitist for the popular Infiniti “Drivers” ad campaign, appearing weekly in the Wall Street Journal for the 2+ years.

Recent work has appeared in Fortune, Forbes, Runner’s World, GQ, Sportrs Illustrated, Time (International Edition), Euroman, and Esquire magazines. Recent book projects include the Encyclopedia of Guilty Pleasures and The Art of Demotivation. His pen is housed in the Newseum in Washington, D.C. Kevin Sprouls is married with 2 children, and lives in Coastal North Carolina.

Day, Amber

Being able to create a world for somebody using just lines and colours – that’s what fascinates Amber Day, an LA-based illustrator who’s done stunning work for a range of fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands. “There’s no better feeling to me than being able to tell a story through an image,” she says.

Travel and taste are two of her biggest passions. “I’ve literally eaten my way through Europe, Africa, and Asia, and I love paddle boarding on The Great Lakes,” she explains.

Alongside the travelling and eating, she’s always drawing - fashion, food and beauty. Her visit to Morocco inspired her to draw Moroccan rugs for weeks, and the Red Panda at Nashville Zoo led to an obsession with the species. So far, her favourite city is Prague and she returns there two or three times a year. At home, her best friend and work partner is Kale, a rescue poodle with three legs.

Amber studied for a degree in Visual Communications from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles.

Amber’s bold line work has a natural, sketched feel to it, while the addition of watercolour gives her illustrations an organic look and her restrained use of colour sets the mood. A few years ago, she made the decision to draw products how they’d look when laid out flat and it’s proven extremely popular with clients in fashion and beauty.

When she’s creating culinary sketches, she gives them a personal perspective and includes the nuances of real life rather than aiming for perfection. “I want the viewer to feel like they are experiencing the food as if they are there. The napkin might be placed a little off, French fries might be brown from being cooked too long, and the burger could be half-eaten,” she says.

Ashworth, Jonathan

Jonathan Ashworth is a graduate from Edinburgh College of Art and the RCA. He has always been interested in drawing, in making careful observations of the world as well as imagined scenarios drawn from the minds eye. His imagery seeks to reflect his all encompassing passion for life; capturing the poignancy of human interaction, the beauty of the natural landscape as well as that of the city. Jonathan pays homage to the great printmakers of the past to produce deceptively simple designs that hold resonance for life in the 21st century.

Harris, Philip

Philip became inspired by art as a child studying his grandfather's old sketchbooks around his home. During university he inherited his grandfather's vast collection of dip pens and began experimenting with dip pen and ink. Becoming fascinated by the style, he still uses the same nibs today as well as devolving to use other mediums such as rotring pens and Photoshop to create his images.

Kerr, Sam

Sam Kerr approaches his work with an equal amount of thought placed on the drawing style and concept. “For me, the two are inseparable and as important as each other. To get the best out of an idea, you have to match it to the right medium.”

Although most ventures into different ways of working have come about through a basic need for variety, some were born out of necessity. In 2011, Sam Kerr spent six months bedridden as a result of back problems, so in order to keep up his drawing, learnt to work entirely on his iPhone.

Asher, Katharine

Tallon, Ben

Loud, lively, frenetic and expressive, Ben Tallon’s artwork captures the many moods of modern life thanks to his instinctive drawing style and ample splashes of ink, brush marks and scribbles. Growing up in Keighley, West Yorkshire, Ben loved Leeds United, wrestling and video games as a child. They still give him inspiration today, and sometimes feature in his work, alongside pop icons and TV stars. Now located in London, Ben is passionate about creativity and is the author of Champagne and Wax Crayons, as well as the host of the podcast Arrest All Mimics. He has a BTEC in Graphic Design from Keighley College, and a BA in Illustration from the University of Central Lancashire.

APPROACH
Pens, inks, brushes, found materials and textures, acrylics, spray paint, pastels, wax and colored pencils – Ben is very much a mixed media creative. He’ll use worn out old brushes that have a little more depth and character than new ones, and favors the unexpected or happy accident. Photoshop is used to layer everything together and finalize the composition.

Ben’s style is loose and organic, full of marks and gaps because he likes to engage viewers by leaving something to the imagination.

Recent illustration graduate Jess Stewart-Croker, is well on her way to carving out a path for herself. Sudi McCollum grew up in a creative household with a crazy-ass artist mother and an advertising executive father (he won a Clio!).  She graduated from California College of the Arts with a degree in fine arts.  However, as soon as Sudi graduated, she embarked on a successful career in graphic design, which was much more to her liking.  It was the graphic quality of graphic design that so appealed to her and most all of her art has a noticeable graphic quality to it. Smith, Kelly

Kelly Smith is an Australian Illustrator, working predominantly in fashion and beauty.

With a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Tasmanian School of Art, Kelly majored in photography and graphic design, but reverted back to her love of drawing after graduating. She ran a blog and launched her career after being interviewed in Vogue about an exhibition she was mounting.

Kelly’s approach is mainly traditional, with 90 per cent of the work completed using a graphite pencil. She then scans the drawing in, adding colour and tweaking the image using Photoshop. Her compositions vary – usually it’s a case of highlighting one focal area that’s full of beauty, but in other cases she builds up a scene to surround it.

Her images are intricate, finely detailed pencil illustrations, incorporating pops of digital colour. They are soft and feminine in tone and content.
