Baker, Andrew

Andrew Baker is a successful practicing illustrator, with a strong reputation in editorial illustration and poster design. He won a Gold Award for Editorial illustrator from the Association of Illustrators in 2003, and his work has been featured in the Design, New Media and Editorial sections of the AOI Images Annual and in the D&AD annual. Leicester-born Joe Wilson studied at Leeds Metropolitan University, Graduating with a bachelor of arts degree in Graphic Arts and Design in 2007. After a lifetime of drawing and doodling Joe Wilson became serious about being an artist at an early age and has left himself 'no other option'. Joe Wilson took an interest in printmaking at university and studied this heavily in his final year, with a great deal of his work taking the form of screen prints and etchings. This forms the foundation of Joe Wilson's work today, although since finishing university and leaving the print facilities, other ways of creating similar effects have had to be employed. Joe Wilson's work consists of painstakingly detailed, hand-drawn illustrations, usually in fine-line pen or pencil, that are then scanned and edited on the mac. The fourth girl in a family of 8 children, Colleen Madden made it through childhood pretending to be a space princess with a wookie sidekick and drawing in her cardboard box art studio. Colleen spent some time acting and training at The Second City in Chicago, then went on to graduate from a small liberal arts school in Massachusetts, with a contract major in illustration and English literature. Heiner, Joe & Kathy

In 1964 Kathryn (Kathy) Hughes sat next to me (Joe Heiner) in our sixth grade classroom at Ensign Elementary school in Salt Lake City, Utah. While quietly sitting at her desk, Kathy was struck by a ruler hurled at me (I ducked) by our teacher, Mr. Anderson. We became close friends. After the eighth grade, my family moved to Montreal, P.Q. Canada. It was a long time till I saw Kathy again. Kathy's family stayed in Salt Lake City where Kathy later attended East High School. Kathy married, moved to San Francisco and had one son, Michael. After returning to Salt Lake City, Kathy graduated Cum Laude from University of Utah with a BS degree in Social Sciences. She taught nursery school for two years, became a single parent and a secretary for Architects and Planners in Salt Lake City. I attended Beaconsfield High School near Montreal, studied art and photography at Brigham Young University, and Art Center College of Design, married and had two children. I assisted commercial photographers Ed Goldstien and Carl Furuta. I also assisted David Willardson, illustrator, shooting detailed 4X5 photo reference for his airbrush illustrations. Willardson taught me airbrush techniques and helped develop an airbrush / photographic illustration style. My first portfolio of ten photo / illustrations quickly generated assignments from movie studios, advertising agencies, magazines and recording companies. With the help of the same great reps who represented Willardson, assignments came from across the country. This afforded a move back to Utah. Work went well from Utah and I became a single parent. Fifteen years after sitting by Kathy in sixth grade, she married me. We now have five children (combined) and work together in our studio in Alpine, Utah. Our studio continues to create realistic photo / illustration for clients across the country. Kathy is studio manager and stylist. I am photographer / computer illustrator. Early works were a combination of airbrush and silk screen on photographic prints. Current work is digital, a merging of digital photography and computer illustration. We have received numerous awards including The One Show Gold Award and our work is represented in the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art. Robertson, Michael

Born and raised in northern Ohio, Michael graduated from Bowling Green State University with a degree in painting. He spent ten years as a toy designer and character developer, before trying his hand at illustration. His work has appeared on many children's products, greeting cards and magazines, and has been recognized by the Society of Illustrators. An avid collector of mid-century art and design since the 80's, Michael's vast array of influences include many modern masters such as Calder and Miro, as well as illustrators like Jim Flora, Alice and Martin Provensen, and Mary Bair. Raymond Bonilla graduated from the State University in New York at Fredonia in 2005 with a degree in New Media and Illustration. He continued his studies at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco where he completed his Masters of Fine Art in 2009. He was awarded Best in Show in the Great Lakes Emerging Artist Competition, was a finalist in the Artists Magazine Annual Art Competition,and has been awarded Gold Meals in advertising from both Society of Illustrators of New York and Los Angeles. Born in New Orleans, Rodriguez has lived in California since 1965. He graduated from Chouinard Art Institute in 1969, and began freelancing as an illustrator. Over the years his style has evolved through many phases. He currently illustrates as himself and as the primary artist in his studio 24/7. Rodriguez illustrated the Cesar Chavez postage stamp for the United States Postal Service and Designer Carl Herrman. Mr. Herrman has also commissioned Rodriguez for the Cinco De Mayo Stamp and the Celebrate the Century “1980’s” series of stamps. The Cinco De Mayo stamp was the first postage stamp ever jointly.commissioned by the United States and another country {Mexico} He has won five gold medals and four silver medals, as well as two Patrick Nagel Awards from SILA, the Hollywood Reporter Key Arts Award, many regional awards from across the country, the Airbrush Action Achievement Award, and the great teacher award from Art Center.

James Carey studied at the London College of Printing, graduating in 2002 with a degree in Graphic Media Design. James Carey's image making combines traditional draughtsmanship with a modern, graphic approach. James works first by hand, and then digitally finesses the separate layers of found imagery, sketched portraiture, and photographic elements, to build intricate narratives and instant visions. Griffo, Daniel

Daniel Griffo was born on March 8th, 1973 in La Plata, Argentina, where he currently resides with his wife Elba, his baby boy Benjamin and his two pets Indiana and Jones. As a young child, he was always drawn towards creating and drawing images. At 10, he took his first steps into the world of illustration with the guidance of his drawing and painting instructor who taught him the basic foundations of the craft. I work with ink, pigment liner, felt-tip pen and sometimes I mix hand drawing with digital instruments. My illustrations are surreal, dreamlike, darkly and full of details.

Cerato, Mattia

Mattia was born in Cuneo, a small town surrounded by the beautiful Italian Alps. At 2-3 years old, besides eating a lot of pasta, his father (an artist in his own right!) introduced and encouraged Mattia to draw. As a result, he spent most of his time creating funny images on every surface he could find. When Mattia grew up, he decided to study illustration at the European Institute of Design (IED) in Turin. Within eight months of graduation, he landed his first Illustration job, a book titled My First Picture Dictionary for Rass Language House, Hong Kong. Mattia resides in Cuneo and when not illustrating, he enjoys playing basketball, traveling around the world, playing his bass guitar, and skiing on the Alps.
