Crowther, Peter

Peter Crowther graduated in 1987 from the London College of Printing with a First Class Honors in Graphic Design. Then went onto the Royal College of Art in 1987-1989 graduating with an MA(DES RCA) in Graphic Design. He then worked for six months in one of the first truly multimedia design companies, Decode Design. During this time he beta tested the first version of Photoshop and went onto leave and set up as a freelance illustrator/animator. The journey from working with photomontage, through to photo-retouching and later with realistic 3D has led to many interesting and varied jobs and has been incredibly rewarding. From stamps for the Royal mail up to 96 sheet posters for P&O and the odd title sequence. Today we continue to use the cutting edge 3D software often speaking directly with the chief programmers to request and test new features. As the technology evolves we strive to create the highest level of work with an eye for the details. Peter Crowther lives in London with his wife Suzanna and two children, Roberta and Jack.

Jacey

Jacey has delved into music design, animation, social documentary photography, websites for new media companies which led full circle to his first love, combining photograph and illustration with digital technology.

McKenna, Josh

Born in a provincial British seaside town Josh McKenna is now based in London. Josh’s work is minimally designed but full of voluptuously, curved characters, his work focuses less on the details and more on asymmetric shapes in pleasing compositions using a soft west coast inspired palette. Tan lines and bodacious booties are rife in his portfolio but this fun, cheeky approach gives Josh’s stylised worlds personality.

McKenna’s creative process involves sketching ideas on iPad and Pencil, chopping and changing compositions and then moving to a computer to create vector artwork, adding textures and applying a carefully considered colour palette.

Josh McKenna graduated Falmouth University in 2014 and now works in editorial, advertising, shop windows and emojis on phones.

Brickley, Corey

Corey has been announced Merit Winner of the 3x3 Professional Show, reproduced in the 3x3 Illustration Annual No.13.

Corey Brickley was born in the U.S. In 1987 and now lives and works as an illustrator and designer in Philadelphia.

Corey Brickley is a graduate of the University of the Arts' Illustration program in Philadelphia, PA. Corey creates concept-driven illustrations for editorial, publishing, music and advertising. He is a digital artist who uses a healthy mix of 3D, texture, and Wacom-based painting. His work is concerned with surreal and graphic juxtapositions.

Corey primarily works in editorial and specializes in motion graphics and animation. Corey is a winner of the American Illustration 35th annual competition for his motion illustration work with The Huffington Post.

Fuentes, Edu

Born in Madrid and currently based in London, Edu Fuentes has been working as a freelance illustrator since 2003, combining a wide range of commercial projects with personal work and exhibitions.

With a combination of bold colours and geometry, his artwork orbits between the symbolic and the mechanical, playing with depth of field and multilayered objects. He is inspired by science, cinema and pop culture, and makes a sisyphean attempt to learn Japanese every once in a while.

His work has been featured in the books Understanding Illustration, Ghosts of Gone Birds and Three By Three Illustration Directory.

Horvath, Peter

Peter Horvath, born of Hungarian descent into a lineage of photographers, began taking pictures at age 6. After spending his formative years inhaling darkroom fumes, he worked as a stills photographer until he discovered computers in 1995 when a friend gave him a Macintosh Plus. Shortly thereafter, he happened across the work of Dadaists John Heartfield and Hannah Hoch, whose work exposed him to the world of photo-montage. He has since produced digital collage works exploring narrative, abstraction, and the hypnagogic, and continues to push the boundaries of convention, displacing the familiar and nostalgic with unique, surreal touches. Peter’s ability to master bold compositions that convey complex concepts is what makes his work stand out. His impactful images make him a natural choice for the nuances of editorial work, and the call-to-action needs of advertising. His work is featured in the newly published book from Die Gestalten, "Illusive - Contemporary Illustration", as well as an upcoming book on collage.

He has exhibited in museums and galleries across the globe including the Whitney Museum Of American Art‘s Artport (NYC), Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporaneo (Mexico City), the Musee national des beaux-arts du Quebec (Quebec City, Canada) and FILE Electronic Language International Festival (Sao Paulo, Brazil).

Loeffler, Max

Max was born in rural Germany in 1989 and started out illustrating extensive album artworks for punk and metal bands after doing his homework. After graduating from the Graphic Design department at Hochschule Darmstadt in 2017, he began working as a freelancer with renowned clients like The New Yorker, The New York Times, Adidas and Google. He still enjoys creating artwork for bands.

Influenced by the classic surrealists as well as retro science-fiction book covers, he likes to look below the surface of one-to-one visual translations, adding meaning and room for inference by wrapping his illustrations in the dense atmosphere of a surreal and melancholic parallel universe. His urge is to translate and decipher what can only be felt, not directly seen, and to amplify this visually, particularly in his personal work.

Wolski, Marcin

Marcin Wolski is an illustrator and graphic designer with several years of experience in advertising, and editorial illustration. He began his artistic journey with traditional media, slowly moving to digital art. He lives and works in Sopot, Poland.

In his illustrations, Marcin tries to capture specific mood using simple shapes, colour and light to distill the essence of the story that he tries to tell in each illustration. His inspirations come from retro games and Polish socialist-era posters as well as modern illustration.

BloodBros.

BloodBros. is the studio of New Zealand-born illustrator and graphic artist Emile Holmewood, who currently lives in Tokyo.

Originally a graphic designer, he was once told by a studio creative director to remember he is a "graphic designer who illustrates, and not the other way around", Emile has since worked tirelessly to prove otherwise, bringing his artistic flair to everything he does.

Nevertheless, Emile’s unique style is underpinned by graphic design principles, and contradiction is central to his work: he constructs his illustrations in cold-hearted vectors, then warms them up with playful colours, a heavy dose of humour and sometimes; animation.

Emile's inspiration comes from a vast array of eclectic sources including LEGO, life in Japan, fish, baroque paintings, bubblegum and The Simpsons – to name but a few.

Sheehan, Lisa

Lisa Sheehan lives and works as an illustrator in Bedfordshire. During her BA Illustration at Kingston University (many moons ago) she decided she wanted to become a 3D artist/model maker. Back then that meant literally making the model shooting it and all the faff that went with it, which as a young graduate seemed all a bit too much so Lisa fell into the world of graphic design becoming an Art Director for the Financial Times and spent the next 15 years commissioning CGI artists. The drive to create never left and the desire to produce her own work became so strong that she decided to create the illustrations herself. By working night and day, to grasp the technology of the CGI wizardry, her dreams of ‘model making’ were now back on track albeit within the digital world.

Lisa is a 2D/3D ‘image maker’ producing imaginative CGI illustrations that are often typographical with a pop of colour. Lisa loves to create fun pieces with detailed delicate forms as well as mixing 2D and 3D to create illustrations for advertising and editorial work. The idea that you can, with CGI technology, create almost anything your creative mind can conjure up continues to inspire Lisa every day.

Lisa works part time for the Financial Times as an art director and in-house illustrator, she has extensive magazine cover art-direction experience, having art directed several Financial Times magazines. Lisa is also a published Children’s book illustrator/Author, with an MA in Children’s book illustration from Cambridge school of art.

Koelsch, Michael

Michael Koelsch is an illustrator, designer and digital artist who acknowledges the beliefs of some of the great illustrators of retro era 50's and 60's - the giants like Coby Whitmore and Austin Briggs, who thought that keeping up with the times and evolving your style is as important as your sense of design and color... along with the fundamentals of drawing and painting.

He has worked with every major publishing house, countless advertising agencies, and a large number of design agencies and magazines. Best known for his retro style and horror film posters, Michael Koelsch continues to evolve and adjust his styles for each client.

Long, Chris

Chris Long’s studio overlooks the leafy green expanse that is Clapham Common. From there he watches as the world goes by: polished young professionals hurrying for the Tube, children dawdling to school, postmen, joggers, shoppers, tramps and would-be Jeeves. Boy racers, limos, bikes and bikers, hybrids, mom trucks, double decker buses and the occasional horse drawn hearse.

In time, he’ll manage to capture them all in his charming, vibrant paintings that have over the years graced the pages and packaging of many: Mattel’s My Scene, QVC, Glamour, Penguin Books, BBC Worldwide, Vogue, Perrier, Pearson and The New York Times.

Growing up beside the sea, Chris absorbed all the brash colours, bold shapes and surreal incongruity of his hometown and channeled them into his paintings. His distinctive artwork quickly earned him a place in art school and packed off to Rome with a degree in Fine Art, Chris first drew fumetti for the notorious Italian magazine Frigidaire. A long spell at the New Musical Express gave him the chance to decorate their pages with his droll and pertinent characters of the time. Chris joined CWC in the 1990’s and immediately worked with Parco, Hanako, and Shiseido. His eye for detail and flair for characterization repeatedly attracts commissions from delighted clients in the US, Europe and Asia.

Adams, Kathryn

Miller, Doug John

Doug’s drawings focus on architecture and detail featuring colourful, highly detailed compositions of surreal and fantastical architecture. His architectural drawing has been published and exhibited internationally including at The Royal Academy, The Slade and Roca Gallery’s. His illustration work has been commissioned by publications such as The New York Times, Wired and Empire Magazine. Alongside editorial work Doug has worked for companies such as Netflix on concept design for films, often directly with the film makers themselves, helping bring their architectural visions to life.

Doug completed his bachelor’s and Masters degrees in Architecture at UCL where his project ‘The San Francisco Columbarium’ won him the SOM Fellowship, Bartlett and Donaldson Medals. Doug now teaches part time running architecture and landscape design studios at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL.

McSherry, Kevin

Rathke, Kathryn

Looking at one of Kathryn Rathke’s line-based illustrations can be a bit like working out a puzzle – was it created using one fluid and continuous line, or many? According to the Seattle-based artist she owes her drawing skills to family connections. Her grandmother taught her to draw and supplied her with books by Arthur Rackham, Maurice Sendak, and William Steig, while her father was president of an advertising agency and used to bring home reams of paper for her to practice on.

She has lots of other creative interests too. She learned to make leather masks in Italy, enjoys German experimental theatre, and sometimes throws parties where her friends must act out vignettes found in a 1912 children’s book called Entertainments for All the Year.

Kathryn did an MFA in Set Design at the University of Wisconsin but was always drawing on the side, sometimes accepting commissions from newspapers and magazines. Eventually she flipped things around and made her illustration work a full-time profession and set design became her hobby.

Kathryn does everything digitally in Photoshop and Illustrator using a Cintiq screen by Wacom.

If she’s doing portraiture work, she draws her subject many times over from different angles. This way she learns about the most important features of their face and can draw it in a way that makes it instantly recognisable.

The line is core to Kathryn’s style and her work is very fluid. Expressive and calligraphic, there’s a unique sense of gesture in her illustrations. She also uses crosshatching to develop surfaces in her images, using layers of lines of varying thickness to build up a texture.

Williams, Dan

I am a graduate of the Royal College of Art and am currently living in London renovating a large old Victorian house and building a magnificent studio. My time is divided between illustration, painting on location and lecturing. For me all 3 disciplines feed each other, keeping me on my toes and keen to explore new uses for my work. Howell, Sarah

Sarah Howell works mainly with figurative and fashion imagery. Collaborating with photographers, she initiates a work with a collage base, and then scans drawings and paintings with various mixed media techniques to create a textured artwork. This sees photographic collage smattered with graffiti and energized by vivid illustration, creating a dark, often edgy but always beautiful and bright result. Sarah is originally from Sydney, where she studied a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting. To date, Sarah has had her work featured in many magazines including the Face, Grafik, Tank, Oyster and Gloss, Flaunt, Digit, Computer Arts, Observer Magazine, Maxim, 125 and Dedicate and Illustrated Ape. Butzer, Chris

C.M. Butzer was raised in a small town just outside of Portland, Oregon. In 1992, Butzer left Oregon to attend Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle where he earned a BFA in Illustration. After school he worked for Wizards of the Coast before moving to Florence, Italy. There, he met Luigi Galante who ran a didactic illustration studio, Studio Galante. After working for Studio Galante for five years, he moved to New York City to earn his MFA in Illustration at the School of Visual Arts. He currently teaches at SVA.

Aside from teaching and working as an illustrator, storyboard and concept artist out of his studio in Brooklyn, Butzer also illustrates graphic novels. His first novel, Gettysburg, was published by Harper Collins in 2009. He is currently working on a second novel.

Having started out as a music teacher in public schools, Anne shifted to illustration in 1982, finding the quiet space of her studio a much more peaceful place to work. He has won recognition from American Illustration, the Societies of Illustrators in New York and in Los Angeles, the Society of Publication Designers, the Society of News Designers, and Graphis, and has exhibited his work in numerous group shows across the country.

Heiner, Joe & Kathy

In 1964 Kathryn (Kathy) Hughes sat next to me (Joe Heiner) in our sixth grade classroom at Ensign Elementary school in Salt Lake City, Utah. While quietly sitting at her desk, Kathy was struck by a ruler hurled at me (I ducked) by our teacher, Mr. Anderson. We became close friends. After the eighth grade, my family moved to Montreal, P.Q. Canada. It was a long time till I saw Kathy again. Kathy's family stayed in Salt Lake City where Kathy later attended East High School. Kathy married, moved to San Francisco and had one son, Michael. After returning to Salt Lake City, Kathy graduated Cum Laude from University of Utah with a BS degree in Social Sciences. She taught nursery school for two years, became a single parent and a secretary for Architects and Planners in Salt Lake City. I attended Beaconsfield High School near Montreal, studied art and photography at Brigham Young University, and Art Center College of Design, married and had two children. I assisted commercial photographers Ed Goldstien and Carl Furuta. I also assisted David Willardson, illustrator, shooting detailed 4X5 photo reference for his airbrush illustrations. Willardson taught me airbrush techniques and helped develop an airbrush / photographic illustration style. My first portfolio of ten photo / illustrations quickly generated assignments from movie studios, advertising agencies, magazines and recording companies. With the help of the same great reps who represented Willardson, assignments came from across the country. This afforded a move back to Utah. Work went well from Utah and I became a single parent. Fifteen years after sitting by Kathy in sixth grade, she married me. We now have five children (combined) and work together in our studio in Alpine, Utah. Our studio continues to create realistic photo / illustration for clients across the country. Kathy is studio manager and stylist. I am photographer / computer illustrator. Early works were a combination of airbrush and silk screen on photographic prints. Current work is digital, a merging of digital photography and computer illustration. We have received numerous awards including The One Show Gold Award and our work is represented in the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art. Clients include: Lucasfilm, Salisbury Communications, ABC records, Y&R, Foote Cone & Belding, Satchi & Satchi, Merck, McDonalds and Coca Cola. I hope you enjoy our work. Harrison, Nancy

Nancy began her career like many illustrators do - crayoning on walls. Back then it was considered a bad habit, now she gets paid for it. In fact, she's doodled her way into a great career. While she now live in the U.S., she spent a big chunk of her life in Montreal (that's Mo-ray-al, if you wanna sound French). She went to Art school (big "A" like painting, printmaking, sculpture, and makin' a mess), and studied Graphic Design & Illustration, graduating with a B.F.A., and an M.A. from Syracuse, a much bigger box of crayons, and a big black portfolio to drag around. She has worked as an Art Director & V.P. for an ad agency where she learned "work week" means 80 hours, budgets are ALWAYS less than your quote, and art directors supply free psychotherapy to clients. All this helped her start her own business and she's never looked back: She loves commuting in her slippers (but sometimes hates her boss). So here she is, still doodling, though she now does it digitally. She's done more than 30 kids books, magazines galore, and teaches the occasional digital art class to torture future creatives.

Fortin, Pierre

Born in Montreal, Pierre Fortin now creates multiple award winning conceptional art from his home studio in Ontario, Canada. Heavily influenced by The Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, Art Deco, pop-culture and film noir, Pierre's sometimes whimsical work is immersed in a world of mystique and psychology, incorporating elements of visionary, fantasy and sci-fi. He's constantly seeking to refine his message delivery with experiments in visual concepts of both traditional and digital means. The results are self evident in illustrations that combine imagination and intrigue with visual power. Pierre's career spans more than 20 years, and includes designing and creating for a wide range of internationally known corporations, magazines and publishers, as well as award winning work in the video game and theme park industries. His work has been featured in American Illustration, Catipult and Communication Arts, as well as being seen in Time, Forbes, Sports Illustrated, The Atlantic Monthly, and Business Week. He has also created a mural for Universal Studios and won awards for his designs for the Beijing Cube Water Park and the new Dollywood Mystery Mine.
