Rathke, Kathryn

Looking at one of Kathryn Rathke’s line-based illustrations can be a bit like working out a puzzle – was it created using one fluid and continuous line, or many? According to the Seattle-based artist she owes her drawing skills to family connections. Her grandmother taught her to draw and supplied her with books by Arthur Rackham, Maurice Sendak, and William Steig, while her father was president of an advertising agency and used to bring home reams of paper for her to practice on.

She has lots of other creative interests too. She learned to make leather masks in Italy, enjoys German experimental theatre, and sometimes throws parties where her friends must act out vignettes found in a 1912 children’s book called Entertainments for All the Year.

Kathryn did an MFA in Set Design at the University of Wisconsin but was always drawing on the side, sometimes accepting commissions from newspapers and magazines. Eventually she flipped things around and made her illustration work a full-time profession and set design became her hobby.

Kathryn does everything digitally in Photoshop and Illustrator using a Cintiq screen by Wacom.

If she’s doing portraiture work, she draws her subject many times over from different angles. This way she learns about the most important features of their face and can draw it in a way that makes it instantly recognisable.

The line is core to Kathryn’s style and her work is very fluid. Expressive and calligraphic, there’s a unique sense of gesture in her illustrations. She also uses crosshatching to develop surfaces in her images, using layers of lines of varying thickness to build up a texture.

Prades, Simon

Simon Prades, born in 1985 into a german/spanish family is living in Saarbrücken, Germany with his wife and son.Since finishing University with a diploma in Graphic Design, he has been working as a freelance illustrator for clients in Editorial, Publishing, Sports, Advertising and Film.

Simon works in analog techniques, such as ink, pencils or watercolor but also digitally, depending on the subject. His work is often a combination of detailed and complex drawings and narrative ideas. Depending on the subject his illustrations can also be rough, spontaneous and moody. He also creates slightly animated versions of his illustrations, which can be used in digital publishing and media.

Ward, Mark

Mark Ward is an artist based in London. His work is derived from his obsession with Americana. Raised on a diet of Saturday morning cartoons, BMX, skateboarding, and drawing, Mark has kept true to his roots soaking up every last candy wrapper and morphing them into his surreal and comical visions. Growing up in the South London suburbs in the late 80’s, Mark was reading every possible American skateboard magazine he could get his hands on. He realized his grey London environment didn’t reflect the sunny California he was being sold in the magazines. Rolling through puddles in South London just doesn’t match up to cruising along Long Beach. Mark’s work mixes the everyday mundane with surreal elements of the 80’s American bubble, encouraging the viewer to see things differently, and peel back the gloss on the pop imagery that he worshipped in his childhood. A graduate of Central St Martins, Mark has been recognized by the Art Directors Club and received a Young Gun Award for his outstanding illustration work. He has exhibited internationally throughout Europe and America, in both solo and group shows. His work was also included in the Pop Art Design show at the Barbican. Alongside his personal work, Mark creates bold imagery for a wide range of commercial opportunities including fashion, magazine covers, editorial and large scale installations. Poloni, Giordano

Introducing Giordano Poloni. Resident of Milan, Giordano's experience in the creative industry builds from motion graphics designer through a journey to illustrator. Inspired by his huge collection of comics, music videos, movies and photography books, and above all, colour, he creates digital artworks highly reminiscent of his Italian heritage.

McKenna, Josh

Born in a provincial British seaside town Josh McKenna is now based in London. Josh’s work is minimally designed but full of voluptuously, curved characters, his work focuses less on the details and more on asymmetric shapes in pleasing compositions using a soft west coast inspired palette. Tan lines and bodacious booties are rife in his portfolio but this fun, cheeky approach gives Josh’s stylised worlds personality.

McKenna’s creative process involves sketching ideas on iPad and Pencil, chopping and changing compositions and then moving to a computer to create vector artwork, adding textures and applying a carefully considered colour palette.

Josh McKenna graduated Falmouth University in 2014 and now works in editorial, advertising, shop windows and emojis on phones.

Cooper, Dena

Soft and skilfully painted, Dena Cooper’s fashion illustrations also offer moments of striking contrast and intensity. Her lifelike models look as they could walk right off the page and join in with your conversation.

With a background in fashion design, Dena is now a leading New York illustrator with a growing list of industry clients. Transplanted into Brooklyn from Fredricksburg, Virginia, she loves New York and Fashion Week in particular. “I’m very influenced by street style that I see around the city, specifically the effortless chic that so many New Yorkers exude walking down the street.”

Further inspiration comes from designers like Marchesa, Dior, Delpozo, and Viktor & Rolf, but Dena also loves reading, running, a good cup of coffee or a glass of wine.

Smith, Henry

The award-winning cartoonist and illustrator Henry Smith is based in Salt Lake City, Utah. He’s an artist who was captivated by cartoons at an early age and never grew out of them. Now, they’re his career and he’s made a name for himself designing unique characters that are full of humour.

“A great character can be designed if you pay attention to the silhouette. Is it something we've seen before? I like to use geometric shapes in fun ways to see if I can get more interesting characters, and making my characters as weird as possible, while still being cute and approachable,” he says.

There’s certainly a 90s vibe in his inspiration cabinet – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Powerpuff Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants are to be found there, along with classic video games like Pokemon Blue and Super Smash Bros. With a graphic design background, he’s also influenced by mid-century modernism. Henry is a keen volleyball player, listens to Country, Rock and Rap, and enjoys the company of his wife and their two sassy dogs.

Brickley, Corey

Corey has been announced Merit Winner of the 3x3 Professional Show, reproduced in the 3x3 Illustration Annual No.13.

Corey Brickley was born in the U.S. In 1987 and now lives and works as an illustrator and designer in Philadelphia.

Corey Brickley is a graduate of the University of the Arts' Illustration program in Philadelphia, PA. Corey creates concept-driven illustrations for editorial, publishing, music and advertising. He is a digital artist who uses a healthy mix of 3D, texture, and Wacom-based painting. His work is concerned with surreal and graphic juxtapositions.

Corey primarily works in editorial and specializes in motion graphics and animation. Corey is a winner of the American Illustration 35th annual competition for his motion illustration work with The Huffington Post.

Fuentes, Edu

Born in Madrid and currently based in London, Edu Fuentes has been working as a freelance illustrator since 2003, combining a wide range of commercial projects with personal work and exhibitions.

With a combination of bold colours and geometry, his artwork orbits between the symbolic and the mechanical, playing with depth of field and multilayered objects. He is inspired by science, cinema and pop culture, and makes a sisyphean attempt to learn Japanese every once in a while.

His work has been featured in the books Understanding Illustration, Ghosts of Gone Birds and Three By Three Illustration Directory.

Margaret Riegel is an award-winning illustrator who works for many prominent national magazines, major metropolitan newspapers and Fortune 500 corporations. Since graduating from The Cooper Union School for the Advancement of Science and Art, Margaret has received many awards including ones from American Illustration, The Society of Publication Designers, and The Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles. Chou, Ping Hua

Ping is an illustrator grew up in Taiwan where she studied Chemistry. After working at a newspaper publisher in Taiwan as a visual designer for four years, she went on to study Illustration at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Gavin, Carolyn

Carolyn currently lives in Toronto, Canada with her family. She is principal designer and creative director for her company ECOJOT. Carolyn also freelances through her agent Lilla Rogers Studios.
Carolyn has worked on a variety of projects including four fabric collections with P&B Textiles, 2 scrap booking collections for K&Co and Packaging for Swedish Organic Candy Company Ekorrens Ekologiska. As well as Holiday cards for Unicef, Gift cards for Target and toys & games for Land of Nod.
Carolyn's specialties are packaging, lettering, florals, animals and repeat designs. Carolyn paints with Gouache, uses ink and traditional digital media.

Archer, Andrew

Andrew Archer has been an illustrator since 2006 and has worked with an enviable list of the worlds most recognizable brands and publications. Inspired by surrealism, wood block prints, edo period art, ideograms and his time spent in Asia, his work is a self asserting mix of hallucinogenic color and rhythmic line. Watkinson, Mark

Born in Gloucestershire and growing up in Lincolnshire, Mark originally wanted to be a mechanic. However, one of his teachers suggested he pursue a career in art and he’s been a successful freelance illustrator since the early 80s. He plays percussion in a band called the B1200s, collects old cars and enjoys a game of tennis. His early influences include Gavin McLeod and Philip Castle.

Mark earned a diploma and then a higher diploma in Graphic Design from the Lincoln College of Art.

Keep it clean, clear and simple is Mark’s mantra. He works in Freehand, Illustrator and Photoshop, as well as using traditional media.

Mark’s style is very graphic with strong line work, and usually employs flat colours. His work is ideal for ‘how to’ images and infographics, with isometric viewpoints and, sometimes, a blueprint feel. He enjoys tackling technical challenges, but also produces more playful and conceptual work.

Laura Ralli is an italian artist, a sculptor, a storyboard artist, a character designer, an illustrator of books for children and young. She combines traditional and digital techniques.

Collignon, Veronica

“I see life in colour,” declares fashion illustrator Veronica Collignon, and looking at her portfolio full of light, colourful imagery, it’s hard to argue. But she takes her obsession with colour even further in her everyday life. For instance, she has a collection of nail polish bottles that she’s never used. “I always end up buying them because I am drawn by the colours! I even remember names and numbers by a form of colour-coding in my mind,” she says.

That quirky sense of fun carries over into her artwork, but it’s underlined by great talent, professionalism and a fantastic technique. Growing up in Mexico, from a young age she was inspired by drawing and creativity, and her favourite illustrators include David Downton, Garance Doré and Izak Zenou. She worked alongside the latter for two years.

She later moved from her home city of Guadalajara to Paris, and then to Madrid, to study. Eventually, she ended up in New York where she now has a range of clients in fashion, retail, advertising, cosmetics and more.

New York’s cosmopolitan mix is the perfect thing to inspire her. She loves to people watch, and enjoys exploring other cultures, with Moroccan and Japanese at the top of her list at the moment.

Veronica studied on the Fashion Studies programme at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Madrid, and later gained certificates in Fashion and Fine Art from Parsons The New School.

Projects begin with Veronica learning about her client and the audience they want to reach. Research is key, before she plays with different looks and ideas, and then settles on the best composition. After the sketching comes her favourite part – adding the colour.

Whimsical, colourful and fun are words commonly used to describe Veronica’s style. Her work has the feel of classic fashion illustration about it, with striking graphical forms, a gestural style, and lovely brushwork and inking.

Wilson, Oscar

Oscar Wilson started working in London in 1996. Specialising in image creation, illustration and hand crafted typography, Oscar Wilson produces work for a wide variety of clients, with commissions from the advertising world, fashion, publishing, film and TV. Hsinping, Pan

HsinPing Pan is an illustrator and animator who grew up in Taiwan and found her artistic self in Los Angeles. She loves drawing colorful things and animating them, and she always aims to create something happy and warm that will bring smiles to people's faces. Her work can be seen in children books, magazines, commercials, films, and music videos, and her clients include Land of Nod, Real Simple, Nick Jr. magazine, Kraft, Calgonit and Yo Gabba Gabba!

Panczyszyn, Shauna Lynn

Shauna Lynn Panczyszyn is the go-to illustrator for vibrant, hand rendered type and she’s honed her wonderful chalk-board aesthetic down to perfection. Based in Orlando, Florida, her talents go well beyond brilliant lettering. She has a classically trained voice and is also a figure skater. When she’s not in her studio, there’s a good chance she’s at the local rink turning triple axles with her friends.

Her musical tastes change by the season – in the warmer months it’s usually Bon Iver, Death Cab for Cutie and Zero 7, but in autumn or winter she’ll listen to Pat Metheny, George Winston, Gordon Lightfoot, Mannheim Steamroller or Josh Groban. She loves old advertising and packaging, particularly fruit crate labels and art deco lettering.

Shauna went to the University of North Florida, originally to study opera. However she switched to graphic design, took classes in painting and screen printing, and discovered a love of illustration. After graduating she did an internship in an agency in Jacksonville, and worked in graphic design in Orlando before becoming a freelance illustrator.

You’ll never believe this, but Shauna has only ever worked on a chalkboard once. Despite how incredibly chalky her projects look, they are all digitally produced. Having said that, she does begin in her sketchbook working in a pink pencil because it’s pale and allows her to refine the letterforms as she goes over them with a 2B. An image is then scanned into Photoshop and worked on using a Wacom Cintiq.

It’s Shauna’s custom brushes that really make the difference. She’s spent ages creating them and they ensure that her chalk-look work is as realistic as possible.

In terms of colour, her instinct is to go wild. However, as she points out she doesn’t want her work to look like a rainbow has exploded on it, so she usually cuts her palette back to four bright colours.

Many have called Shauna’s work whimsical. While there’s certainly fluidity and freedom about it she’ll also fill background areas with fine detail. Little words squeezed in here and there allow the client the opportunity to augment and refine a message – or just get more in there! But the secret to Shauna’s style is her desire to please her inner five-year-old. Happy and positive is what she does best and if her work isn’t those things she won’t be satisfied with it.

Dahlstrom, Nicko

Nicko Dahlstrom is an artist-illustrator who specializes in illustration, storyboard & caricature. He has been recognized nationally and worldwide for his artwork. Nicko began drawing as a child after developing a fascination with animation and still continues to pursue this passion.

Johnson, Daniel

Daniel Johnson is a digital artist with a BFA in Illustration and a background in traditional media. Now a freelance illustrator and visual effects artist, he worked for years as an Art Director, Illustrator, and Animator at an ad agency in Sonoma County, CA. Dan is an Adobe Certified Expert and has taught computer graphics at various locations in California, including the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. As a digital artist, he is largely self-taught and enjoys sharing his experience gained through years of trial and error. He won the Guru award in Illustration at the 2007 PhotoshopWorld and was also the spotlighted designer in the May/June 2008 issue of Layers magazine.

Sussman, Nigel

You just can’t look away once you’ve seen one of Nigel Sussman’s isometric mural illustrations. There’s so much going on – dancing horses, dinosaurs serving in a restaurant, people running in hamster treadmills… The detail is incredible and it’s all done with a lighthearted sense of humour that keeps you looking, and smiling.

So it’s no wonder that Nigel has worked for both hugely innovative brands like Google and Redbull, as well as picking up more traditional print projects with the likes of Popular Mechanics and Time Out. With a musician father, creativity was encouraged as Nigel grew up and aside from drawing his passions include playing bass guitar (and illustrating his band’s album covers), Dungeons & Dragons and going for long walks with his wife. The destination is usually an eatery where tasty food is served… but not by dinosaurs.

There’s all kinds of activity going on in Nigel’s work and it’s no surprise to find that his influences include Martin Handford (creator of Where’s Wally?), MC Escher and the computer game SimCity. At home in Berkeley, California, he lives with his wife and a cat called Fidel Catstro.

Nigel spent two years at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, before crossing the country to the California College of the Arts to complete his degree in Illustration.

Today Nigel works on his drawings using a Wacom Cintiq tablet, but he has a good grounding in traditional media. He used to love working in pen and ink, and acrylic paints.

Bold, bright and complex, Nigel’s signature style uses isometric line art and a striking but simple colour palette. He loves creating seek-and-find type drawings, as well as illustrations that feature complex fantasy architecture and/or imaginary machines.

AviOfer

Freelance illustrator and animation director. Experienced in projects for a variety of media, including book and editorial illustration as well as direction of animated films, both commissioned and independent. Exhibited in art shows and screened in festivals around the world.

Beedie, Duncan

Duncan Beedie’s cartoony style comes from his background in animation. Based in Bristol, aside from drawing copious quirky images, he collects clockwork robots, can identify pretty much any military aircraft and has a dog called Ivor who you might spot here and there in his work.

Sulzberg, Daniel

Illustrator Daniel Sulzberg is based in Santa Barbara, California, and his work is infused with the easy-going creativity that his home state is famous for. It’s colourful and fun, welcoming and sometimes a little bit zany. Maybe that’s why the characters he draws so effortlessly seem to jump to life in his illustrations.

Growing up in a town called Danville, he was always Dan from Danville. After initially trying to emulate his older brother, who was a fine artist, Dan later discovered cartoons, comics and Nintendo games. Soon, he had invented Danvillage, a place for all his whimsical characters to inhabit. It’s become the moniker he works under as an illustrator.

Dan’s favourite artists include Dali, Murakami and Miyazaki, while Prince and Reggae music keep him juiced up on tunes. He also has a huge collection of 80s vinyl from his days as a DJ.

Schooner, Florian

Berlin based Art Director and Designer working within branding, illustration, editorial design, packaging design and contemporary art.
