Ching, Tracie

Tracie Ching is an illustrator and graphic designer living and working in Washington, DC. A self-taught digital artist, Tracie specializes in portraiture featuring complex, graphic line work with a limited palette - a tendency-turned-style after years of working in the medium of silkscreen prints.

While commissioned for a wide range of projects including commercial athletic apparel, editorial illustration, and gallery work, Tracie Ching is best known for her alternative movie posters.

Mantha, John

John Mantha is a Toronto-based illustrator.

His major commissions include the design of nine coins for the Royal Canadian Mint, one of which was chosen coin of the year. He has done commemorative pieces for The Ford Motor Company and the Toronto Transit Commission, as well as 34 paintings for The Church of Our lady Of Good Counsel.

Working for book publishers, advertising agencies, magazines, corporations, television and movies, his work has been seen throughout North America.

Thus far, John has illustrated twenty-four books, including the Kids book of Canada's Railway, which won The Children's Literature Roundtables of Canada 2001 Information Book Award, and was an official selection for the 2003 Red Cedar Book Awards. The Kids Book of Canadian Exploration was nominated for the 2006 Hackmatack Award for non-fiction.

He works in oils and oil-wash, and uses photoshop to enhance the finished piece. His style is realistic in nature with an emphasis on texture.

Berkeley, Jon

Jon Berkeley graduated in Fine Art from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin in 1983. Since then he has lived and worked as a freelance illustrator in Dublin, London, Sydney, and Hong Kong. Jon has worked extensively with many top advertising agencies such as Bozell, Saatchi and Saatchi, McCann Erickson, Campbell Grey, DDB Needham, BBDO, and all those other Beeby Deebies. O'Kif, Alejandro

Alejandro Okif lives in Buenos Aires with his creative family, his wife Monica (illustrator), son Sebastian (musician) and daughter, Simona (illustrator and tattoo artist). As a young boy, his father who worked in advertising introduced him to the arts. As a result, he was totally hooked and started drawing immediately. When he was at Facultad de Humanidades y Artes de Rosario, he was drawn to Egon Schiele, Rembrandt, Goya, and Lautrec. As he started working in publishing, he discovered the talented work of some amazing illustrators such as Andre Francois, Quentin Blake, Ronald Searle, and Tomi Ungerer. Alejandro works with different mediums, from acrylics, watercolors, inks, and Photoshop. When not illustrating, he enjoys watching movies, going to concerts, and playing bass guitar with his son Sebastian(though he claims that he is not a good musician).

Ning, Amy

Born in Tokyo and relocated to the States in 1972. Studied illustration at California State University in Long Beach. Along with her freelance career, she has was selected as a feature illustrator for the Orange County Register Newspaper from 1989 through 2008. Her stylized, decorative and often conceptual art has been recognized in shows of SI, SILA, Print and SND. Cliff Nielsen studied traditional and digital illustration and graduated as valedictorian from Art Center College of Design in 1994. Glass, Randy

Originally from Kansas City, Randy became the youngest illustrator Hallmark Cards had ever hired — while still a junior in high school. He attended Ringling School of Art and Art Center College of Design, supplementing his tuition by drawing five-minute portraits of people at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World ... a surprisingly valuable education in discipline and patience. Randy began freelancing as an illustrator in the mid-’80s, quickly establishing a strong reputation for highly detailed representational drawing and painting. Although adept at working in color, he gravitated toward and has always preferred a simple black and white palette. He is a master of the graphic technique known as “stipple” — the process of marking a surface with numerous small dots to create an image. It’s a style favored by print media, where paper quality can adversely affect the reproduction of an image, and by its very nature, it’s ideal for Web usage. Perhaps best known commercially as a portrait artist, Randy has an exceptional aptitude for capturing his subject’s character and essence with carefully nuanced precision. Bonilla, Raymond

Raymond Bonilla graduated from the State University in New York at Fredonia in 2005 with a degree in New Media and Illustration. He continued his studies at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco where he completed his Masters of Fine Art in 2009. He was awarded Best in Show in the Great Lakes Emerging Artist Competition, was a finalist in the Artists Magazine Annual Art Competition,and has been awarded Gold Meals in advertising from both Society of Illustrators of New York and Los Angeles. Vitale, Stefano

Stefano Vitale is an internationally acclaimed illustrator and artist. While studying for a degree in Economics at the University of Southern California, he often traveled to Mexico and the Southwest. There he found inspiration in the simplicity of the popular local folk art. This influenced him so much that when he completed his economics degree Vitale continued at The Arts Center in Pasadena, California for a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Williamson, Alex

Alex Williamson was born in England in 1973 and now lives and works as an illustrator and Graphic Artist in London. Alex Williamson has a BA Graphic Design (printmaking) from Leeds Metropolitan University and an MA in Communication Design from the RCA. Alex creates original artwork using cut-out, collage and print techniques, combining found ephemera, drawing and photography. His work is concerned with experimental graphic process, fiction and narrative. Robert Crawford graduated with a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design. Levine, Lucinda

Moreno, Gabriel

Illustrator, engraver and painter based in Madrid, graduated in Fine Art from the University of Sevilla in 1998. Since then he has worked in different design studios and advertising agencies in Andalusia. In 2004 he moved to Madrid and in 2007 began showing his portfolio. He was named among the top 20 new illustrators by Computer Arts magazine in 2007. O'Leary, Chris

A native Ohioan, Chris O'Leary was born in Youngstown and studied painting at the Columbus College of Art and Design. He worked briefly in Cincinnati for the Gibson Greeting Card Co. and has been freelancing ever since, creating paintings for clients such as Barnes and Noble, Atlantic Monthly, Vegetarian Times, the L.A. Times, Readers Digest, the Boston Globe, Barron's Weekly, and Ohio Magazine. He now lives in Columbus with his wife, Tricia, and daughters, Lily and Kate. Before he had kids, he played finger style guitar, was the project director for the restoration of an urban ravine, and took long bicycle trips, but now he pretty much just watches after the kids...and paints.

Sprouls, Kevin

Kevin Sprouls introduced the hallmark portrait style to the Wall Street Journal in 1979. Between 1979 and 1987, Kevin worked on staff for the paper, creating illustrations and training artists in the style. At the time of his departure from the daily activity of putting out the paper, he was Assistant Art Director in charge of the in-house artists, which numbered 4-5 staff artists, and 2-3 part-timers.

He has been quite active in the freelance illustration sphere since then, contributing to advertising, publishing, editorial and corporate projects. His style is notable for its high level of detail and traditional, engraving like effect.

Sprouls’ work has been featured in the Smithsonian magazine, a web exhibit of the National Portrait Gallery, and a major exhibit celebrating Columbus Day which was mounted in Grand Central Terminal, New York in 2005. He is currently the principal portrait artist for Worth Magazine. He was the portraitist for the popular Infiniti “Drivers” ad campaign, appearing weekly in the Wall Street Journal for the 2+ years.

Recent work has appeared in Fortune, Forbes, Runner’s World, GQ, Sportrs Illustrated, Time (International Edition), Euroman, and Esquire magazines. Recent book projects include the Encyclopedia of Guilty Pleasures and The Art of Demotivation. His pen is housed in the Newseum in Washington, D.C. Morgan, Patrick

Patrick started his career as a freelance designer after gaining a Degree in Graphics and Illustration with Commendations for Print Making at Kingston University (London) in 1998. John Kachik is an alumnus and occasional adjunct faculty at the Maryland Institute College of Art where he studied illustration and sculpture. Mahoney, David

David Mahoney is a British freelance illustrator based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Since 2010 David has worked with a wide range of Fortune 500 companies and now works under the alias 'Headless Horse'.

His latest client list includes: The Guardian, 20th Century Fox, OPI, Kiehl’s, GQ, Fortune, Maxim, Easyjet, Tesco, Men’s Health, The Economist, NBA, MLB, Institutional Investor, Disney Pixar and Adobe.

David believes keeping tradition alive is important in an increasingly digital age. He specialises in the merging of traditional mediums and digital applications resulted in his signature style coined "tradigital". This method of creating his illustration allows his work to be animated, a style often used in digital editorial magazines.

In 2014, David opened his first solo exhibition at the Coningsby Gallery, London titled ‘Black + White’: a series of animated portraits of twenty leading individuals created in squid ink and watercolour.

In 2013, David was awarded the 99U Scholarship by the Samsung Accelerator and 99U for his illustrative work. David has had his work displayed in numerous publications and has spoken at events in both the USA and UK. David is a Community Professional for Adobe.

After graduating with a degree in graphic design, Monika Roe worked as an art director and creative director for ad agencies in Los Angeles and Indianapolis. Koelsch, Mike

Michael Koelsch (b: 1967) is an illustrator who acknowledges the beliefs of some of the great illustrators of the 50's and 60's, the giants like Coby Whitmore and Austin Briggs, who thought that keeping up with the times and evolving your style is as important as your sense of design and color and the fundamentals of drawing and painting. Mike resides in Huntington Beach, California with his wife, two girls and their Greater Swiss Mountain dog. Martin Haake is an internationally known illustrator and artist. After some years living in London, Martin moved back to Berlin where he lives with his wife and his two sons who both want to grow up to be pirates!(the old fashioned kind of course). Prades, Simon

Simon Prades, born in 1985 into a german/spanish family is living in Saarbrücken, Germany with his wife and son.Since finishing University with a diploma in Graphic Design, he has been working as a freelance illustrator for clients in Editorial, Publishing, Sports, Advertising and Film.

Howell, Sarah

Sarah Howell works mainly with figurative and fashion imagery. Collaborating with photographers, she initiates a work with a collage base, and then scans drawings and paintings with various mixed media techniques to create a textured artwork. This sees photographic collage smattered with graffiti and energized by vivid illustration, creating a dark, often edgy but always beautiful and bright result. Sarah is originally from Sydney, where she studied a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting. Alan Berry Rhys is a graphic artist and illustrator home based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He has been a graphic design professor at Buenos Aires University for 8 years. Hargreaves, Martin

History and humor marry together beautifully in the illustrations of Martin Hargreaves, and his versatile style has seen him creating everything from pastiche images mimicking the great masters to fantastical beasts and still life paintings. You’ll find his work in advertising, children’s books, magazines and newspapers, and even at Hampton Court Palace.

It’s no surprise to learn that Martin’s greatest inspiration comes from classical painters like William Hogarth, Hans Holbein, Rembrandt and Giovanni Battista Piazzetta. In fact, he says that if he could travel back in time he would visit the 18th century, and alongside his love of Renaissance artwork he also loves classical music.

Martin works from a shed in his garden, with large windows through which he can see apple trees and the rolling hills of East Sussex. If he ever gets creative block, he likes to dig in his vegetable garden, or look after his many pets, which include two dogs, three horses, two guinea pigs and seven chickens.

Martin has a BA Illustration from Brighton Polytechnic (now Brighton University).

His approach and the media he uses vary from project to project, but he always begins drawing with a simple pen on paper until he has an idea of what direction the image will take. Martin works in traditional media – oil paints, watercolor, pen and ink – and is also adept at making changes digitally as required. The 2B pencil is his all-time favorite art tool.

Martin’s inspiration comes from the old masters, and the styles he works in follow on from that. In his portfolio you’ll see fine paintings that look just like Rembrandts, and others that are more like 18th century engravings or 19th century book illustrations. In short, he will come up with a style that suits the brief.

Rathke, Kathryn

Looking at one of Kathryn Rathke’s line-based illustrations can be a bit like working out a puzzle – was it created using one fluid and continuous line, or many? According to the Seattle-based artist she owes her drawing skills to family connections. Her grandmother taught her to draw and supplied her with books by Arthur Rackham, Maurice Sendak, and William Steig, while her father was president of an advertising agency and used to bring home reams of paper for her to practice on.

She has lots of other creative interests too. She learned to make leather masks in Italy, enjoys German experimental theatre, and sometimes throws parties where her friends must act out vignettes found in a 1912 children’s book called Entertainments for All the Year.

Kathryn did an MFA in Set Design at the University of Wisconsin but was always drawing on the side, sometimes accepting commissions from newspapers and magazines. Eventually she flipped things around and made her illustration work a full-time profession and set design became her hobby.

Kathryn does everything digitally in Photoshop and Illustrator using a Cintiq screen by Wacom.

If she’s doing portraiture work, she draws her subject many times over from different angles. This way she learns about the most important features of their face and can draw it in a way that makes it instantly recognisable.

The line is core to Kathryn’s style and her work is very fluid. Expressive and calligraphic, there’s a unique sense of gesture in her illustrations. She also uses crosshatching to develop surfaces in her images, using layers of lines of varying thickness to build up a texture.
