Vietnamese artist Turine Tran’s imaginative children’s illustrations were inspired by some of the Victorian greats like Arthur Rackham, yet she’s established her own unique style which is charming, elegant and popular with clients who like her nostaligic, painterly approach.

Turine grew up in a house full of books that she could escape into as a child. She was taught to draw by her father. Ho Chi Minh City is a hot, busy and crowded place, but Turine prefers the countryside – particularly when the weather is dark and gloomy. In addition to her art, she does a lot of crafting, from beads to sewing and from knitting to cooking.

Turine studied design in Vietnam, before going to the School of Art, Design and Media in Singapore. She moved to Edinburgh to study for a Masters in Illustration, and later returned to Vietnam.

Images usually start off as rough pencil sketches in Turine’s notebooks as she tries to establish the forms and the composition. Detail and shading are added and then the pencil image is scanned in so that she can add colour in Photoshop. She has designed her own custom brushes within the application.

Turine’s style is intentionally nostalgic. She wants viewers to reminisce when they see her work – as though it’s just been discovered in a dusty old attic. Her Victorian-inspired illustrations are full of whimsical lines and forms, given life by paper textures. Meanwhile, she enjoys creating children’s characters that aren’t just cute and cuddly, but which are vulnerable and unpredictable, and don’t behave in ways that adult viewers expect them to.

Laura Coyle creates distinctive art with wide appeal. Her clients include major brands like Target, Amazon.com, Disney and publications including Better Homes and Gardens and The Wall Street Journal.

Laura made her first foray into product design with Hasbro. She was called upon to refresh the classic Parcheesi board game, a design that had remained unchanged since the early 1900's. The challenge was to create illustrations that would highlight the game's origins in India and enhance its appeal to kids today. In working on Parcheesi, she discovered a love for designing products that can connect with people every day.

Since then, Laura's gift bag, wrap and paper ware designs have appeared on the shelves at Target, Papyrus and Hallmark.

Laura grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, and earned her BFA from Auburn University. She started her freelance career living in the East Village in New York City, dropping her portfolios off with art directors while working part time as an assistant to renowned jazz photographer Jimmy Katz. Laura now lives back in her hometown with her husband Clayton, an architect, in their 1950's ranch house which they renovated together.

Born in Hong Kong and raised in Philadelphia, Jannie moved to New York to study illustration at Parsons School of Design. After working as a graphic designer and an art director at many fun places such as Nickelodeon, Scholastic, and TIME Magazine for Kids, she decided that illustration was her true calling. Jannie (also known as Chicken Girl) now specializes in illustrating for the children’s market, with her work appearing in both trade and educational books, magazines, toys, crafts and digital media. She currently works and plays in Boston, MA with her husband and daughter.

The fourth girl in a family of 8 children, Colleen Madden made it through childhood pretending to be a space princess with a wookie sidekick and drawing in her cardboard box art studio. Colleen spent some time acting and training at The Second City in Chicago, then went on to graduate from a small liberal arts school in Massachusetts, with a contract major in illustration and English literature. Daniel Griffo was born on March 8th, 1973 in La Plata, Argentina, where he currently resides with his wife Elba, his baby boy Benjamin and his two pets Indiana and Jones. As a young child, he was always drawn towards creating and drawing images. At 10, he took his first steps into the world of illustration with the guidance of his drawing and painting instructor who taught him the basic foundations of the craft. In his teens, he became a self-taught comic illustrator and worked for both Argentinean and Italian publishers. Shortly afterwards, he worked for various studios creating licensed art, where he sharpened his skills and amassed a great deal of experience. As a freelance illustrator, Daniel has worked for many large companies including Image Comics, Warner, DC, and Disney. Anthony lives with his wife Kathryn and three children, Isabella, Eimilia, and Rory along with two cats, Maurice and Jasper in a small village in Cheshire, in the northwest of England. Scott McBee is a New York based artist and designer. He received his BA in graphic design and illustration from San Diego State University. In 1989 Mcbee launched a successful career in commercial illustration, designing for such major firms as Young & Rubicam, BBDO and Ogilvy. Suzanne Beaky grew up in Gahanna, Ohio, and studied illustration at Columbus College of Art and Design. Kathi Ember lives with one man, three sheep and four cats in an old stone farm house just outside of Kutztown, PA. Christopher Peterson's work is marked by great attention to detail, while maintaining an informal colorful and painterly feel. His creative approach is thorough and focused, sometimes reading an entire biography when starting a rock poster. Whenever possible, photographic reference must be his own. Drawing is always central to the work. Good figures and correct perspective are important while maintaining a spontaneous flair. These are the strengths that make Christopher one of the best freelance illustrators on the west coast.

Having been the president of the San Francisco Society of illustrators, he knows this business of illustration inside and out. He is a member of the Society of Illustrators, the US Air Force Art Program, ASIP, a leading organization in the fight for copyright protection and a royalties collection society for artists. His rock posters have won major national recognition. There is a section on his work in the Art of Modern Rock (Chronicle books, 2004). His poster for John Lee Hooker won a Gold Medal in the San Fancisco Society of Illustrators, and won a place in the New York Society of Illustrators annual show and book- Illustrators 42 (Watson-Guptil, 1998). He has in fact created more than 80 posters for a variety of venues and bands. His original paintings hang in the halls of the Pentagon, as a part of the US Air Force Art program. His work has been published in the Los Angeles Society of illustrators annual book, and in Print magazine's regional design annual. In 1995, he won the bronze medal for advertising in the San Francisco society of illustrators show, in1996 he won gold, silver, and bronze medals in the San Francisco society of illustrators show.

Christopher Peterson was born in New York in 1957, and grew up in Westport, Connecticut. He received his education at the Art Institute of Boston, and then at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and began his career as an Illustrator in New York City in 1980. During his studies in illustration at DeMontfort University in Leicester, England, Jamie was runner-up for the coveted Macmillan Prize for his work on Flap Doodle, a charming story set on an English farm. Since his graduation in 1994, he has illustrated close to 50 children’s books, a large percentage of which have been quirky, eccentric stories. He has just completed the interior illustrations for a series of Jigsaw Jones chapter books by James Preller (Scholastic USA), which he enjoyed for the chance it gave him to develop characters over a five-book run. His interests apart from illustration include soccer, music and travel. After four consecutive years of holidays in Italy, Jamie decided to live in Tuscany for several years so that he can enjoy its food, wine, climate and people on a daily basis. Currently, he is now living back in London.

Mattia was born in Cuneo, a small town surrounded by the beautiful Italian Alps. At 2-3 years old, besides eating a lot of pasta, his father (an artist in his own right!) introduced and encouraged Mattia to draw. As a result, he spent most of his time creating funny images on every surface he could find. When Mattia grew up, he decided to study illustration at the European Institute of Design (IED) in Turin. Within eight months of graduation, he landed his first Illustration job, a book titled My First Picture Dictionary for Rass Language House, Hong Kong. Mattia resides in Cuneo and when not illustrating, he enjoys playing basketball, traveling around the world, playing his bass guitar, and skiing on the Alps.

John's formal training was not in illustration, but rather theology, which he received at Cambridge University. However, he always loved drawing, and one of his early jobs was as a newspaper cartoonist. But he says that he really learned to draw when he worked at the British Museum, drawing oriental objects to scale. In his children's books illustrations, he is particularly inspired by what he calls "the gooniness" of young school children. John and his family divide their time between Brighton, England and Long Island, New York.

A native Ohioan, Chris O'Leary was born in Youngstown and studied painting at the Columbus College of Art and Design. He worked briefly in Cincinnati for the Gibson Greeting Card Co. and has been freelancing ever since, creating paintings for clients such as Barnes and Noble, Atlantic Monthly, Vegetarian Times, the L.A. Times, Readers Digest, the Boston Globe, Barron's Weekly, and Ohio Magazine. He now lives in Columbus with his wife, Tricia, and daughters, Lily and Kate. Before he had kids, he played finger style guitar, was the project director for the restoration of an urban ravine, and took long bicycle trips, but now he pretty much just watches after the kids...and paints.

John grew up in Bogotá, Colombia and studied graphic design at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. He still lives there with his wife Ana and 2 children, Avril and Ian. He is fortunate enough to work in his home studio, where he is able to share his passion of drawing and painting with his children while working on projects. He started drawing at an early age and when he was six year old, his parents enrolled him in his first painting, sculpture, and character design class. He remembers his first attempt at illustration drawing Transformers and "Condorito" (a comic character based on anthropomorphic condor from a Chilean cartoonist). He was hooked. John continued to study art with plastic artists. When not illustrating, he enjoys spending quality time with his children, playing soccer with his friends, watching movies and traveling. He has recently visited Argentina, Cuba, and Peru.

Jomike Tejido is an architect and award-winning illustrator and author who has made over 50 children’s books in his hometown in Manila. Some of which are Tagu-Taguan (Hide and Seek) (1st National Children’s book awards, Best Reads 2010), The Amazing Hat, and the Foldabots Toy Books. He has also worked with Oxford University Press, McGraw-Hill, and most recently, Scholastic. Jomike enjoys art inspired by nature and is reflective in his other venture as a painter on hand-woven mats. Apart from art, Jomike enjoys playing soccer, eating seafood, cooking and traveling to new places. Jomike lives in Manila, Philippines with his wife and baby daughter, Sophia.

Tom began work as senior art director for JP Morgan Chase in New York City, shortly after receiving his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1993. Two years later, he was illustrating for nationally-known publications, including Time magazine, Rolling Stone, the Wall Street Journal, Entertainment Weekly, Sports Illustrated, Business Week, TV Guide, Barron's, Forbes and Smart Money. Corporate clients have included MGM, Dupont and Colgate. Throughout his career, Reis has also worked as a fine artist, producing work with all the refinement that one would expect from a classically trained painter. Abby has drawn all of her life. When she was eleven, she and her grandmother had a card business: Abby drew, and her grandmother sold. In college she studied art, but also liked science and nutrition, and wished there was a way to combine it all. Several years later, after she was married and had a daughter, she and her husband founded Fresh Samantha, the juice company, which fulfilled that dream. In addition to her graphics for Fresh Samantha, she has illustrated many picture books and chapter books for children. She says that she loves to draw odd characters, and hates to draw straight lines. Abby lives with her husband and two children in Connecticut.

Tamara Henderson is an illustrator and designer who is originally from Florida and currently lives in Atlanta, GA. Laura Ralli is an italian artist, a sculptor, a storyboard artist, a character designer, an illustrator of books for children and young. She combines traditional and digital techniques.

Mike began freelance illustration after several years as the owner of Reelworks, an animation studio specializing in commercial and entertainment films. A regular contributor to The Minneapolis Star Tribune, he has taught illustration at both the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and Rhode Island School of Design, and currently teaches part-time at the College of Visual Arts in St. Paul. His highly textured, somewhat abstracted and sometimes zany style adapts to the needs of a wide range of clients, including advertising, design, editorial and juvenile publishing.
