Church, Caroline

Caroline Church is a scraperboard artist, and the perfect illustrator to approach if you’re after something with a vintage engraved look to it. Based in Twickenham, she grew up in Uganda, where she had pet chameleons and was encouraged to make greetings cards by her mother.

Caroline received a BA in Illustration at the Chelsea School of Art. She then learned wood engraving as a guest student at Royal Academy Schools.

Caroline’s style is reminiscent of 19th century engraving, so it tends to lend itself well to projects that aim to convey traditional and time-honoured values. Not surprisingly, her main influences include the engravers Thomas Bewick and Gustav Dore.

Besom, Mae

Mae graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2003, she began work as a character designer in Sichuan, China; she then decided to embrace her love of illustration and has been working as a full-time children's illustrator since 2007.

Mae uses traditional media, pencil and watercolour to create texture and light within her enchanting illustrations.

Mae Besom is the illustrator of the #1 nationally best-selling What Do You Do With an Idea? The book written by Kobi Yamada tells a story of one brilliant idea and the child who helps to bring it into the world. As the child's confidence grows, so does the idea itself. And then, one day, something amazing happens.

Mae has also just finished illustration the sequel called What To Do With A Problem, out in bookstores from July 1st.

Day, Amber

Being able to create a world for somebody using just lines and colours – that’s what fascinates Amber Day, an LA-based illustrator who’s done stunning work for a range of fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands. “There’s no better feeling to me than being able to tell a story through an image,” she says.

Travel and taste are two of her biggest passions. “I’ve literally eaten my way through Europe, Africa, and Asia, and I love paddle boarding on The Great Lakes,” she explains.

Alongside the travelling and eating, she’s always drawing - fashion, food and beauty. Her visit to Morocco inspired her to draw Moroccan rugs for weeks, and the Red Panda at Nashville Zoo led to an obsession with the species. So far, her favourite city is Prague and she returns there two or three times a year. At home, her best friend and work partner is Kale, a rescue poodle with three legs.

Amber studied for a degree in Visual Communications from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles.

Amber’s bold line work has a natural, sketched feel to it, while the addition of watercolour gives her illustrations an organic look and her restrained use of colour sets the mood. A few years ago, she made the decision to draw products how they’d look when laid out flat and it’s proven extremely popular with clients in fashion and beauty.

When she’s creating culinary sketches, she gives them a personal perspective and includes the nuances of real life rather than aiming for perfection. “I want the viewer to feel like they are experiencing the food as if they are there. The napkin might be placed a little off, French fries might be brown from being cooked too long, and the burger could be half-eaten,” she says.

Bradford, Tim

Living right next to a nature reserve in Nottingham, Tim Bradford also has the convenience of being just half a mile from the city centre. From alpine landscapes to geometry and animals, he’s inspired by nature and also loves drawing people of all sizes, shapes and nationalities.

Tim studied for a BA Hons in Illustration at Lincoln University and an MA in Illustration and Animation at Kingston University London.

Everything begins as a pencil sketch, which is then coloured up digitally using Photoshop and Illustrator. With his animation skills, many clients ask him to create work for both print and digital projects where motion is required. For a more physical feel to his work, Tim is increasingly introducing hand drawn elements as well.

Most of Tim’s imagery is quirky, fun and character based, and his work often incorporates custom typography along with some movement. Life, energy, charm and wit are what he strives for when he creates an illustration, and he likes to find visual solutions that are easy on the eye and keep you looking.

Tjader, Ella

Born in Lithuania, Ella Tjader is married to a Swede and has lived in Sweden, Scotland and England before ending up in Zurich, Switzerland. Her childhood was spent drawing and painting princesses in puffy dresses, and some of her school friends still have the pictures she gave them all those years ago.

She loves rain, walking in the woods, and reading moody Scandinavian crime novels, which she somehow finds life affirming. She’s also influenced by vintage Scandinavian illustration. Her perfect evening would include cups of tea and a film. She hates rollercoasters.

Ella studied at the Vilnius School of Economics, but later did a graphic design course via the online college Sessions.edu. That’s how she discovered Adobe Illustrator, and armed with a Wacom tablet she began building up her portfolio while studying the world of illustration, and all the magazines, fashion firms and brands she might be able to work for.

Feminine, elegant, modern, detailed, intricate, loose and light, Ella’s style is usually based around line work, though sometimes she’ll use brushes in Photoshop to drop in some vibrant colours. There are lots of organic and intertwining elements in her work to draw the viewer in. She also creates surface designs - seamless patterns and prints.

Larkum, Adam

It’s a love of drawing that drives Adam Larkum, and it’s something he practices every day, constantly coming up with quirky new characters and putting them in hair-raising situations. And if you chat with Adam for a while he has a few real life hair-raising situations to recount. While he was a teenager, his family lived in Alexandria, Virginia for a while where Adam became the projectionist in the town’s cinema. When the bulb blew during the scariest part of Friday The 13th the crowd poured out of the cinema like a lynch mob…

This didn’t deter Adam from studying animation once he got back to the UK, and as a student he won a competition to create a short film for MOMI and Channel 4. Once his career producing animated commercials was under way, he became an illustrator as well. He’s now created over 30 children’s books, and illustrates for magazines and packaging.

Adam studied illustration and animation, and received a BA followed by an MA from the Edinburgh College of Art.

Adam believes every commission should start with a pencil in one hand and an eraser in the other, and is never afraid to erase whole areas of a drawing if they aren’t right. He loves working in ink on paper and then shifting into Photoshop to bring the piece together. If his work were a film, he says, it would be an Ealing Comedy – fun, fast and eccentric.

OFerrall, Zoe More

Zoe More O’Ferrall’s studio is situated in Notting Hill. It’s a prime position for an illustrator who loves markets. She’s right next to Golborne Road Antiques Market and minutes away from Portobello Road with its famous stalls selling old papers, postcards, vintage clothing, furniture, prints and more.

Further inspiration comes from a love of film and photography, like the colourful and imaginative work of Autumn de Wilde, Tim Walker, Wes Anderson and Juergen Teller. BBC Radio 4 is played constantly in her studio as she creates imagery for fashion and food brands, retailers, advertising agencies, publishers and more.

Zoe’s training began at Wimbledon School of Art, and she went on to do a BA at the London College of Communication as well as a postgraduate course at Central Saint Martins.

Zoe usually works in pen and ink – she has a broad collection of pens to choose from - and loves to draw by hand. She only uses a computer to plan compositions and to touch up the handmade images. Now and again she’ll experiment with collage and screen printing too.

Scott, Vicky

Growing up in West London near Richmond and the Thames, Victoria Scott was always drawing and making things as a child, and knew from an early age that she wanted to be an illustrator.

Her influences come from the early 20th century, such as Art Deco and Art Nouveau, but she also enjoys a bit of 60s psychedelia.

Vicky went to the Wimbledon School of Art and Design for foundation, and then went to the University of Brighton to gain a BA in Illustration.

All of Vicky’s illustrations are created as handmade paper collages. By its very nature, Vicky’s work is highly figurative, and you’d describe it as quirky, colourful, bold, graphic and a little retro. She likes to bring a narrative element into her work as much as possible.

Armstrong, Gail

Gail Armstrong has been creating paper sculptures for over 20 years and her enthusiasm for the medium hasn’t waned one snip. She still wants every image she creates to be better than the last, and this approach has led to plenty of awards, including a Cannes Gold Lion for her Kleenex campaign. She finds inspiration in contemporary art and, not surprisingly, the huge Paperchase outlet on Tottenham Court Road in London.

Gail did her foundation course at Sheffield Polytechnic before gaining both a BA and Post Graduate Diploma in Graphic Design and Illustration at Glasgow School of Art.

Though finally rendered in pieces of paper that have been carefully cut and glued together, each image Gail creates begins as a series of drawings. As she explores the composition and various concepts, she focuses on creating something that has both style and substance to it. The result is usually a photograph of her artwork, which viewers love to see more than once, poring over the textures, colours and patterns in the final construction.

Maguma

MaGUMa is the pseudonym for Spanish artist Marcos Guardiola Martín, who is based in Madrid and works for a growing number of publications and international brands.

Inspired by artists like Moebius and Milano Manara, as well as old adult comics like Metal Hurlant and El Vivora, MaGUMa has developed a style that’s bright, tactile and a little surreal.

MaGUMa studied at the School of Architecture in Madrid, but also took the opportunity to learn abroad in Mexico and Portugal during his education.

Although he works digitally, using a Wacom Cintiq graphics tablet and digital painting software, MaGUMa’s work has an increasingly handmade feel.

MaGUMa’s style will remind you of classic mid-20th century illustration work done in pastel or gouache, and sometimes it looks like a silkscreen print saturated with ink. He strives to give the work a tactile quality, inviting the viewer to try and touch it to feel the texture. Strong concepts and colours are also prevalent in his pictures.

So, Caroline

Imagination, adventure and emotion are at the heart of Caroline So’s fashion and beauty illustrations, and they’re ingrained in her personality as well. Originally from Southern California, she set off for the Big Apple at 17 with the goal of working in fashion and she hasn’t looked back since. Now she finds herself producing stylish and elegantly whimsical imagery for the biggest names in fashion and beauty, with a portfolio that’s going from strength to strength.

Caroline has 10 years of experience working as a fashion designer, and that background helps her find the right solutions for her clients with every image she creates.

Her inspirations include Francis Bacon and Egon Shiele, and she loves collecting novel perfume bottles, secretly watching reality TV, and backpacking.

Caroline has a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology. Her philosophy has always been to carry on learning new techniques to broaden her skills and style. She continually explores fresh processes and effects, enabling her to impart emotion, energy and a touch of attitude into her clients' projects.

Caroline’s style is bursting with emotion, whimsy and life. She likes to bring a touch of joy to everything she does, and gives her subjects a sense of playfulness, delicacy and quirkiness.

Malan, David

Like all kids, David found he loved to draw at a young age. He stuck with it through his whole life and has developed a frank, accurate approach to portraying the emotions of the subject. His influences have long included many classical artists of the 19th century and Golden Age illustrators. David studied Illustration at Brigham Young University and worked for over a decade as a Disney artist while refining his illustrative style. He can handle a range from light and stylized to realistic and accurate and has worked with clients from editorial, publishing, advertising, video game design, even coin design for the U.S. Mint. David lives with his artistic wife and four muse children in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Serafin, Kasia

Originally from the south of Poland, Kasia travelled to Scotland to complete a degree in Visual Communication and Illustration at Gray’s School of Art. Kasia’s passion for illustration is reflected in her one-of-a-kind designs and playful solutions. She has a fully formed distinctive style and enjoys working with a limited colour palette, but it doesn’t stop her from constantly pushing her illustrations further into new territory. She’s the winner of a D&AD New Blood Pencil award for her John Lewis project - the trophy sits proudly on her desk.

Jenkins, Kate

Kate combines an artist’s eye for colour with a witty imagination. Using her background in fashion and talent for design, Kate creates amazing, innovative crocheted pictures – each one an original. Kate’s philosophy is that anything can be created from yarn as long as it is made with love, and over the past few years Kate’s career has seen her create a knitted greasy spoon cafe, a crocheted supermarket, an American Diner and entire fish counter! She continues to work on commissions for public and private collections worldwide.

Marta Orzel

Marta was born in a small town in Poland and for as long as she can remember she's been passionate about drawing. She studied Drawing and Illustration at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, Poland. Marta currently resides in France sharing her studio with a group of friends and finding her inspiration in nature, science and everyday life.

Marta's work is a mix of plants and organic life set against straight lines, right angles and sharp geometric shapes where intense, succulent colours are used to bring a lively sense of character to her work. The images she produces are filled with mountain landscapes, deep forests inhabited by animals and fantastic creatures walking under sparkling skies.

Harris, Philip

Philip became inspired by art as a child studying his grandfather's old sketchbooks around his home. During university he inherited his grandfather's vast collection of dip pens and began experimenting with dip pen and ink. Becoming fascinated by the style, he still uses the same nibs today as well as devolving to use other mediums such as rotring pens and Photoshop to create his images.

Mulvanny, Sara

Sara Mulvanny grew up with a paint brush in one hand and a cup of tea in the other. After studying Illustration at Kingston, Sara moved back to her North Hampshire studio which she shares with her cat, Simba. Whilst this cheeky feline tries to walk across Sara's keyboard or balances precariously on stacked sketchbooks, Sara can be found creating her stylised pen and ink drawings, which she digitally transforms with texture and colour. Inspired by the age of Art Deco illustration and muted colour palettes, her charming illustrative style has captured the attention of many clients including Harrods, Sainsbury’s Magazine and Harper Collins.

Zafra, Marta

Born in Jaén, Spain, Marta studied Fine Art in Granada, Andalusia and studied an MA in illustration, now her work wins recognition worldwide. Whether it be botanical illustrations or the portrayal of animals and people, her illustrations exhibit a careful solid base in draughtsmanship combined acutely with a subtle intuition for colour, mixed both by hand and digitally.

Battuz, Christine

Christine Battuz was born in France and currently residing in Bromont, Quebec, Canada. She started drawing at 3 when she was able to hold a pen. Growing up, Christine was inspired by her mother’s collection of painting all over her house. She studied in Italy and received her Masters of Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts of Perugia. After graduating, she was uncertain as to what to do with her diploma. A good friend who is a designer predicted and convinced her that she was an illustrator. Interestingly enough, this wonderful friend later turned out to become her husband. She has illustrated over sixty children books, published in North America, Korea and Europe. Her work appears in educational books, magazines, toys and toys packaging. She teaches art to adults and children of all ages. When not illustrating, she loves trail running and skiing with her husband and son.

Borlasca, Hector

Hector was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina where he currently resides with his wife Silvana and daughter, Micaela. He had initially studied to become a lawyer but found his true passion was illustration. He began his career as a graphic designer and then eventually developed into an illustrator. Hector published his first illustration in Argentina at age 19. His work has appeared in advertising campaigns, magazines, newspapers and textbooks in several countries including Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Mexico. In 2002, Hector decided to pursue the American market and during his first visit to NY, he landed a series of books for Scholastic. While not illustrating, Hector enjoys playing soccer and perfecting his tango.

Ceolin, Andre

André Ceolin is a self-taught illustrator from Brazil He started his first attempt at sketching around the age of four when his father brought home some reams of paper from work. It was in that moment that he fell in love with painting and drawing. André initially got a degree in pharmacy at UNIMEP. Though he worked in this field for several years, his artistic passion was too strong to ignore. As a young father, he was surrounded by beautiful children’s books and was always drawn to the spontaneity of the imagery. He then decided to switch gears and studied at School of Visual Arts in NYC, Melies, and Escola Panamericana de Artes to develop a signature look and learned new illustration techniques. He illustrated his first book “Um Dia na Vida de Micaela” de Cauê by Steinberg Milano, published by Editora Roda & Cia in 2009. Ever since, he has illustrated over 20 books by great publishers in Brazil such as Roda & Cia, Saber e Ler, SM, Moderna, FTD, Editora do Brasil, Editora Abril. He loves working with books targeting juvenile readers from the very young age to middle-grade and young adult. When not illustrating, he creates toys and small sculptures for his son. He also enjoys bicycling, playing his guitar, and, singing.

Diaz, Maine

Born in La Plata, Argentina, Maine Diaz, grew up drawing and painting. She was often seen drawing with her pencils or crayons in deep concentration. Cartoons captured her imagination early on and realized immediately that she wants to be an animator when she grows up. Her mother, a biochemist and grandfather were truly flabbergasted upon hearing her declaration. At the age of 16 she took a workshop and start animating, working in films like Patoruzito, El Arca (Patagonik, Argentina), Gizaku and Nocturna (Filmax, Spain). Simultaneously, she enrolled in Audiovisual Communication at Universidad DeLa Plata (UNLP). Soon after, she also started illustrating for children’s story books and educational books. In 2002 with Crimsomnia Studio, she was a finalist at Ford’s “Saldras mas” publicity contest, with “Habitos noctunos” short. In 2005 she won first prize for the character design category of Bizpills (Hi Impatc Learning Experiences), España.

Currently, Maine lives in a tiny green house where she spends time with her two cats, Chula and Lola. She loves tending her garden while Chula eats all the plants and Lola jumps and climbs the trees. Maine prefers to be barefoot while painting and singing in her studio. She is a pretty good cook and sweated several years near the oven and many pans. When not illustrating, she also enjoys swimming, writing, taking photos.

Flores, Jose Emroca

Jose Emroca Flores grew up in a humble family of four from Northern Nevada where he spent much of his youth actively outdoors skateboarding, playing baseball, and snowboarding. He has always been creative and imaginative on paper and outdoors. Building makeshift skate ramps from scrapwood was the norm in his childhood. He’d round up the kids from the cul-de-sac and they’d skate late into the evenings. He moved to California after high school to play baseball and pursue his art. Emroca later attended the Academy of Art in San Francisco where he learned to develop the ability to materialize his imagination while advancing his technique as a visual artist. On his downtime from school, he’d still skateboard and snowboard and started to surf in the sharky cold San Francisco waters. It was then when he stumbled upon his forever two loves of his life: his new found passion for the ocean and his beautiful wife. When he graduated from the Academy of Art, he immediately went to work as a visual development artist in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. In the course of his work on films, games, animation, books, and advertising, his original oil paintings were shown in galleries across the U.S.

Lucas, Margeaux

Margeaux Lucas was born on Halloween, so she loves spooky things like black cats, full moons, and very starry nights. She began drawing constantly from age four, amazing her friends with pictures of people and animals, especially horses, which were her favorite. Her love of picture books came from the many hours she spent before bedtime reading from the collection at her grandmother's house. As a teenager she loved fashion, but found that she was better at drawing than sewing. She studied Graphic Design in school, but is largely self-taught as an illustrator. Margeaux loves to travel, and three of her favorite cities are Paris, London and New York, her current home. Margeaux's work reflects her love of fashion, nature, and the many shapes, sizes and colors that people come in, plus the constant exuberance of children.

Holmes, Stuart

Londoner Stuart Holmes is now based in Australia’s creative enclave of Melbourne. Trained as a graphic designer, he felt that illustration allowed him much more freedom, and he developed a flat vector style that has remained popular for well over a decade.

Stuart is addicted to vinyl and wherever he goes seeks out a record crate to dig through. He’s also a huge fan of Southampton FC, and led the team out as a mascot back when he was seven years old.

Hutchinson, Andrew

Fur, feathers and fins – they all come out perfectly when painted by British nature artist Andrew Hutchinson. Living on the North York Moors, Andrew is a part-time ranger with the Forestry Commission and monitors the activity of adders and certain bird species in his area to help conserve them, which makes him the perfect choice for any project built around a passion for wildlife.

Being out and about and experiencing nature is a crucial source of inspiration for Andrew, constantly informing his illustrations of the natural world. Andrew has an NDD in illustration from the Cleveland College of Art and Design. In addition to observing the cycles of Mother Nature, he enjoys looking at Jurassic fossils and Oriental antiques. Influences include Alan Hunt, Terence Lambert, Robert Bateman and Ray Harris-Ching.

APPROACH
Andrew paints with acrylic on board. Many of his pictures are inspired by the variety and complexity of forms, textures and colors offered by the natural world.

STYLE
Painting an enhanced form of realism, Andrew aims to achieve an accurate, realistic representation but with a little added something that only a painting can give.

Beedie, Duncan

Duncan Beedie’s cartoony style comes from his background in animation. Based in Bristol, aside from drawing copious quirky images, he collects clockwork robots, can identify pretty much any military aircraft and has a dog called Ivor who you might spot here and there in his work.

Smith, Henry

The award-winning cartoonist and illustrator Henry Smith is based in Salt Lake City, Utah. He’s an artist who was captivated by cartoons at an early age and never grew out of them. Now, they’re his career and he’s made a name for himself designing unique characters that are full of humour.

“A great character can be designed if you pay attention to the silhouette. Is it something we've seen before? I like to use geometric shapes in fun ways to see if I can get more interesting characters, and making my characters as weird as possible, while still being cute and approachable,” he says.

There’s certainly a 90s vibe in his inspiration cabinet – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Powerpuff Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants are to be found there, along with classic video games like Pokemon Blue and Super Smash Bros. With a graphic design background, he’s also influenced by mid-century modernism. Henry is a keen volleyball player, listens to Country, Rock and Rap, and enjoys the company of his wife and their two sassy dogs.

Rollet, Claire

Born in France, Claire Rollet spent over 20 years in London and has recently relocated to Amsterdam in the Netherlands. London will always hold a very special place in her heart but for now she is loving cycling around discovering the Dutch capital. In her spare time she loves sewing; each garment she sees as a mathematical problem waiting to be solved.

Music accompanies Claire in her work and she has daytime and night-time playlists. Todd Terje, Kiki Gyan, Mashrou' Leila and Cosima are out when the sun’s up, and at night she listens to the likes of Hercules Love Affair, Gotye and Baloji.

Hodges, Lee

Lee Hodges comes from deepest, darkest Kernowfornia – also known as Cornwall. The sea and coastline have always been a part of his life, and today he lives on the foothills of Dartmoor, in Devon. In addition to his vibrant, mixed media illustration work, Lee is a DJ and runs club arts nights in the Southwest of England. He loves to explore and experiment with a range of creative media, but drawing was his first love and that’s what drives him as an illustrator.

Dearwater, Andy

Dearwater Illustration has built a national reputation for creating clean and thought-provoking images for some of the world's most notable design firms and agencies. This work has been featured in Communication Arts, American Institute of Graphic Arts Annual, The New York Art Directors Club and The New York Society of Illustrators.

Arnett, Sarah

Sarah Arnett’s beautiful work is renowned for its colourful nature-inspired prints. Sarah’s love of gardening and botanical gardens is key to her work. Studying and interpreting flowers, foliage, land & skyscapes are the starting point of any project. Throughout her work you will find recurring tree motifs to delicate abstract patterns inspired by butterflies and tropical plants, a real visual treat. Sarah’s illustrations develop from the hand-drawn and are then digitally illustrated. Not only a fabulous illustrator and print designer, she also runs her own clothing label and makes beautiful dresses and printed textiles. What excites her the most, is colour, “It’s my real passion”.

Andrews, Chris

Chris Andrews is an Illustrator and Printmaker based in Bedfordshire, UK. His work combines striking compositions with strong use of colour and texture, resulting in digital images that have a vintage, nostalgic appeal. Chris is also known for his vintage-inspired British bird and animal screen prints which recall the graphics and fonts found in 1940’s educational books. He has exhibited and sold prints both in the UK and internationally. Clients include Ted Baker, Farrow and Ball, and the British Library.

Javens, Ben

Ben grew up in a small town in Yorkshire and though he now resides in Birmingham he still holds dear those formative years and his northern roots. Those that know Ben will no doubt tell you he can be a bit of a curmudgeon but that deep down there is a happy soul trying to get out and those that know his work will no doubt see the battle between happy and sad in the characters he draws and the situations they find themselves in. Ben's work is often very simple but always displays a strong emphasis on colour and a carefully considered composition. He takes much of his inspiration from the books he collects about illustrators and designers from the mid 20th century and those of new artists’ that give a nod to past styles and trends. He also fills his working days with music so as to let it seep into his soul and be transformed into something that can be seen.

Eason, Rohan

London based Illustrator Rohan Eason works predominantly in pen and ink. He is best known for his stark black and white imagery, which plays heavily on the roles of composition and view point, and the balance between intricate detail and dark or light space. His work has become widely used in book illustration and more recently in advertising, where his uniquely hand crafted style stands apart from the more typically used digital art forms.

Although art has run very clearly through his family and his childhood, it was only after leaving university and a painting degree that he decided to pursue illustration as his preferred discipline. Rohan loved the work of Aubrey Beardsley and Arthur Rackham as a boy, and this devotion to and pursuit of the beautifully hand drawn line followed him into adulthood. His portfolio now bursts with the magical and fantastical scenes from dreams to nightmares, from real life to imagined creations, but all with the same single grounding fact, that of beauty and balance.

Taylor, Nadia

Nadia Taylor is a designer and printmaker based in London. Her colourful prints are filled with bold shapes and striking pattern. She loves screen-printing and the whole process informs her work – from the use of a limited colour palette to the incorporation of textures and dark outlines. Her work projects range from large-scale hand-painted murals, packaing, book covers, greeting cards, gift wrap, menus and farm signs with a list of clients including Ikea, Target, Mr Kipling, and Zizzi Restaurants.

Field, Peter James

Peter has a degree in world art history and anthropology, specializing in Japanese culture, and taught for three years at state schools in the mountains of rural Japan. His intricate hand-made work focuses on the human figure, and particularly the face. His work is tender, playful and at times surreal. A fascination with the interplay of figurative imagery and abstraction has excited a recent interest in combining stylized subject matter with surface pattern.

Barber, Isobel

Isobel is a paper engineer and illustrator, living and working in the beautiful county of Dorset. Isobel graduated from the Arts University Bournemouth in 2012 with a degree in Textile design, where she specialised in creating illustrative patterns and print designs using a cut paper technique. Isobel continues to use this method to create detailed work and miniature sets, using layers of card and cut paper. Isobel has worked with a number of clients in fields such as advertising, editorial, branding, live illustration events and most recently film. Clients include The National Trust, Tesco, Lands' End, Harveys Furniture, Benson for Beds & Wilderness Festival. When not wielding a pair of scissors or a scalpel, some of her other pastimes include baking, prising scraps of stray paper from the jaws of her miniature schnauzer Otto, running along the Dorset coast, flowers and photographing colourful things.

Kerr, Sam

Sam Kerr approaches his work with an equal amount of thought placed on the drawing style and concept. “For me, the two are inseparable and as important as each other. To get the best out of an idea, you have to match it to the right medium.”

Although most ventures into different ways of working have come about through a basic need for variety, some were born out of necessity. In 2011, Sam Kerr spent six months bedridden as a result of back problems, so in order to keep up his drawing, learnt to work entirely on his iPhone.

As of December 2011, Sam Kerr returned to his studio with a new back and continues to work on his collaborative projects with illustration collective Lie-ins and Tigers, and new joint venture Interrobang with friend Russell Weekes.

Fuentes, Edu

Born in Madrid and currently based in London, Edu Fuentes has been working as a freelance illustrator since 2003, combining a wide range of commercial projects with personal work and exhibitions.

With a combination of bold colours and geometry, his artwork orbits between the symbolic and the mechanical, playing with depth of field and multilayered objects. He is inspired by science, cinema and pop culture, and makes a sisyphean attempt to learn Japanese every once in a while.

His work has been featured in the books Understanding Illustration, Ghosts of Gone Birds and Three By Three Illustration Directory.

Moreno, Juan Manuel

Juan was originally from Buenos Aires. As a young boy, he was always drawn to creating images. His first “job” was to color his newborn brother’s head in bright felt pens. He spent most of his childhood years living in the countryside and cultivating his passion for painting. After studying graphic design, he lectured at the university and worked as an in-house illustrator for different studios with clients ranging from Warner, Disney, Conspiracy and Scholastic. In 2003, Juan and his wife, Patricia decided to travel the Americas and ended up living in different countries. In 2006, they finally crossed the pond and decided to stay in Barcelona, where he started a career as a freelance illustrator.

Fernandez, Carlos

Carlos Fernandez is an illustrator & designer based in Houston, Texas with over 20 years experience in corporate identity, logo design, iconography and illustration. His work has been recognized by peers, competitions and publications such as Logolounge, Communication Arts, HOW Design, Rockport and more.

Carlos grew up in El Paso, Texas, a city located on the border of Texas, New Mexico and Mexico. Rich in culture, diversity and history, living on the border provided a unique setting and influence as Carlos studied and learned his craft.

In 1998, Carlos moved to Austin, Texas, took a design position at a design firm and became an active member of AIGA Austin. The following year, Carlos joined SicolaMartin (now Y&R Austin), a well established advertising agency and important member of the Austin marketing scene. During his employment, Carlos refined his knowledge and expertise in developing creative solutions for marketing challenges, corporate identity and brand strategy.

In 2000, Carlos formed Fernandez Studio, a creative resource specializing in logo design, iconography and illustration dedicated to serving adveritising and marketing agencies, design firms, publications and direct clients large and small. Combining the disciplines of design and illustration, Carlos has been an important resource for supplementing creative departments with a specialized skillset.

Horvath, Peter

Peter Horvath, born of Hungarian descent into a lineage of photographers, began taking pictures at age 6. After spending his formative years inhaling darkroom fumes, he worked as a stills photographer until he discovered computers in 1995 when a friend gave him a Macintosh Plus. Shortly thereafter, he happened across the work of Dadaists John Heartfield and Hannah Hoch, whose work exposed him to the world of photo-montage. He has since produced digital collage works exploring narrative, abstraction, and the hypnagogic, and continues to push the boundaries of convention, displacing the familiar and nostalgic with unique, surreal touches. Peter’s ability to master bold compositions that convey complex concepts is what makes his work stand out. His impactful images make him a natural choice for the nuances of editorial work, and the call-to-action needs of advertising. His work is featured in the newly published book from Die Gestalten, "Illusive - Contemporary Illustration", as well as an upcoming book on collage.

Peter has been awarded numerous grants from The Canada Council for the Arts for his new media work, and is the recipient of commissions from Rhizome.org at The New Museum, NYC (2005) and Turbulence.org New Radio and Performing Arts, Boston (2004). He has exhibited in museums and galleries across the globe including the Whitney Museum Of American Art‘s Artport (NYC), Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporaneo (Mexico City), the Musee national des beaux-arts du Quebec (Quebec City, Canada) and FILE Electronic Language International Festival (Sao Paulo, Brazil).

Loeffler, Max

Max was born in rural Germany in 1989 and started out illustrating extensive album artworks for punk and metal bands after doing his homework. After graduating from the Graphic Design department at Hochschule Darmstadt in 2017, he began working as a freelancer with renowned clients like The New Yorker, The New York Times, Adidas and Google. He still enjoys creating artwork for bands.

Influenced by the classic surrealists as well as retro science-fiction book covers, he likes to look below the surface of one-to-one visual translations, adding meaning and room for inference by wrapping his illustrations in the dense atmosphere of a surreal and melancholic parallel universe. His urge is to translate and decipher what can only be felt, not directly seen, and to amplify this visually, particularly in his personal work.

Barbara Bongini was born in Milan. She knew at an early age that she will be an artist. She went to an artistic high school and later enrolled in the Illustration program at the IED (European Institute of Design). After graduation, she pursued a career in children’s publishing, illustrating several series for different age groups for the largest Italian publishing houses. Barbara has considerable experience in the advertising field as well, designing packaging materials, leaflets, brochures, posters, characters and background for cartoon series. Barbara is also an author of several series of moveable children’s game-books and an album on modern art for children. When not illustrating, Barbara loves spending time with her 2 kids, watching cartoons. She also enjoys going to bookstores and building her own library of illustrated books. Oliver, Mark

Experienced and versatile, Mark Oliver has a bold, graphical style that is as impactful as it is engaging. His line work, color and compositional skills are second to none, and his background in advertising means he knows exactly how to meet an art director’s brief with innovative new approaches.

Even when he worked at Alliance International, Mark took the opportunity to illustrate his own ads. With over 20 years under his belt as a freelance illustrator, today he creates imagery for some of the biggest brands and top names in publishing. Now based in Worthing on the South Coast, he’s inspired by Raymond Loewy, Hergé and Eduardo Paolozzi. Mark has a degree in Graphic Design from Middlesex University.

APPROACH
Mark has used a wide range of media during his career, from physical painting and collage through to Illustrator and Photoshop. Most projects these days are tackled digitally, but he loves to draw and paint as well if it suits the commission.

STYLES
Mark works in a variety of styles that he adapts to suit the requirements of a job. His favorite at the moment involves an isometric perspective, geometric shapes and a distressed finish with a retro palette.

Asher, Katharine

Using a dynamic combination of color and the ‘inspired mark’, Katharine Asher’s fluid brushwork and creative flare help secure commissions from clients around the globe, in a wide range of sectors. While she specializes in fashion and beauty, Katherine enjoys tackling a wide variety of briefs, applying her expertise, energy and elegance of line.

As well as her illustration work, Kathy creates conceptual art, exploring process works and installations. Pigment, viscosity and movement are key factors in her art, and occasionally glimmers of her personal work transfer into her illustrations. She has studied graphics, illustration and fine art, and some of her influences include Paul Jenkins, Keith Tyson, Cornelia Parker, Anish Kapoor, René Gruau and Kathe Kollwitz.

Kathy has a spontaneous and playful approach to a brief, choosing the medium that best suits the job in hand. “One of the joys of working in this way is focusing in the moment, using a triptych of experience, knowledge and happenstance,” she says.

STYLE
Kathy’s work is often light and minimal, relying on strong lines, deftly applied and mark-making techniques. She uses watercolor and ink, using color to highlight and accentuate her figurative work rather than to dazzle.

Tallon, Ben

Loud, lively, frenetic and expressive, Ben Tallon’s artwork captures the many moods of modern life thanks to his instinctive drawing style and ample splashes of ink, brush marks and scribbles. His ability to organize chaotic creativity and turn it into a captivating image is exactly what his clients want.

Growing up in Keighley, West Yorkshire, Ben loved Leeds United, wrestling and video games as a child. They still give him inspiration today, and sometimes feature in his work, alongside pop icons and TV stars. Now located in London, Ben is passionate about creativity and is the author of Champagne and Wax Crayons, as well as the host of the podcast Arrest All Mimics. He has a BTEC in Graphic Design from Keighley College, and a BA in Illustration from the University of Central Lancashire.

APPROACH
Pens, inks, brushes, found materials and textures, acrylics, spray paint, pastels, wax and colored pencils – Ben is very much a mixed media creative. He’ll use worn out old brushes that have a little more depth and character than new ones, and favors the unexpected or happy accident. Photoshop is used to layer everything together and finalize the composition.

STYLE
Ben’s style is loose and organic, full of marks and gaps because he likes to engage viewers by leaving something to the imagination.
